Also, Victory is only confusing for the five-to-ten episodes. The early episodes being out of order and the whole thing being an expository nightmare really doesn't give the show a strong start. Then again, that's how Tomino likes to do things.

The out of order part wasn't his idea, true, but G-Reco and Turn A have the same "we'll get around to telling you the important parts" attitude towards explaining where you are, how things are, and what's going on. Really, I think it just goes to show how much Star Wars influence there is in MS:G with how they handle the introduction.

To be fair ZZ manages abrupt tonal shifts better than IBO, although maybe it was because shit was happening. Victory actually balanced the fun parts with the "oh please no" parts pretty well all things considered.

The thing with ZZ is that it actually has a real cast with actual rounded characters. While being weird for UC up to that point, I think it actually handles its transitions quite nicely. Okay, the initial arc through Moon Moon is a bit off-putting considering how Zeta ended, but it goes to show us that life does go on... even in a fucked up space future where massive segments of the population just die all of the sudden. It's another one of those Tomino things where stuff is fucked up for us as the viewer, but actually makes sense within the context of the world.

IBO just goes every which way with the same cast and the same characters in the same roles. At no point do we go "it's an Orga and Biscuit episode," or Kudelia & Atra in the way we might think of a ZZ episode as belong to Beecha and Mondo or to Roux & Elle. Shifting tones by shifting character focus within an established world is a good way of introducing variety to a setting, but IBO doesn't really bother with any of that.

The thing about it being confusing shouldn't even be an issue. The first episode was confusing? Watch the next one, as they'll probably explain it. Then the next. That's how most serialised stories work. You never understand it in it's entirety unless you watch the entirety.
I hate how impatient people are these days - if everything isn't completely explained in detail in the first episode but leaves them wondering what's going on, or what's this or that, then they get turned off and stop watching. Somewhere along the line the general mindset went from "I better watch the next episode to see if I can understand what's going on, and what's going to happen next!" to "What the fuck why hasn't everything been explained yet shit show 0/10". No one is in it for the long haul anymore and just expect instant gratification.
I think that's what put a lot of people off G-Reco.

Everything being explained, the characters' motivations being immediately made clear, made it a lot worse. There was almost never incentive to watch the next episode, everything was clear and laid out for you all at once. You instantly knew that McGillis was Montag and what his general motives were. It's incredibly hard to be genuinely curious about the show if nothing is deliberately withheld from the viewer and gradually fed through dialogue.
I mean look at Zeta - Haman was name-dropped like 10 episodes in or something but nothing about her was actually explained. Just the fact that she had come of age, had a fleet and was coming from the asteroid belt.
Nothing else was really shown to the audience and she wasn't really mentioned until she showed up after a bit past the halfway point of the show. Only then did we gradually learn more about Haman, Axis-Zeon, Mineva and other details.

Should I bother watching the Unicorn tv show if I saw the movies already? I don't feel the need to watch the movies again, but I'd watch the tv show if it's significantly better in any way.

My autism is telling me I have to finish the tv show simply because I watched the first two episodes. Even though I don't want to. And already say the OVAs. Fuck this hobby.

I've always hated this chart because it tells people what to think. Overtime I think it's become even more of a problem as more and more people come into Gundam under the indoctrination of this as an established 'consensus'.
