I have an alternate explanation for you anon: some people like other things than you. Not just place different value on movies or shows, but looks for and find different elements within those things interesting or likable than you do.

I don't think Unicorn is anything special but is okay (and the carved text has no value, that's basically the point), MD Geist is boring though. All the gory action in the world can't make up for the characters being one dimensional and the story being simple but flimsy. Which I'm sure you'll say Unicorns is too, but I find it more interesting personally. Which is kind of the point I guess. MD Geist isn't bad because it's gory, it's bad because it's boring. It was okay for the action, but I can't say as I'd ever feel the urge to watch it again.

I dunno about Unicorn, but M.D. Geist being hated goes back to when Central Park Media was around. Geist was made CPM's official "spokesmecha," and a bunch of their stuff opened with this weird CG kickoff logo featuring Geist in his power armor. His face was everywhere.

M.D. Geist was also indicative of the "edgy" image anime used to try to sell itself on before the big kids' anime boom times. While anime fans would later prefer it if the public recognized anime as "Not your daddy's cartoons" again once Pokemon and the like became anime's public face, fans didn't care for the fact that the public thought it was all a bunch of violent porn and that one was a creep if he/she watched anime. Geist was everywhere, and, as such, served as a focal point for folks' hatred.

It also was apparently a big success at one point and time, which made the folks who didn't like it hate it even more.

Fans from that era eventually started doing stuff with anime professionally, and, as such, M.D. Geist's reputation as utter trash was cemented in the English-speaking anime fandom. Justin Sevakis' article about the show over on ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/buried-treasure/2008-10-02/buried-garbage-m.d-geist) is a good example this. However, you have to keep in mind that Justin's distaste for this series is somewhat personal, as he worked for the company that sold it and plastered its face everywhere, and whose man in-charge was apparently a massive fan himself.

It's also not exactly wholly good, but I do still love it in spite of its flaws.
