OP here, I themed the post like I did because I watched God Speed Love and with it finished Kabuto, my first Rider series. Thoroughly enjoy it, now wondering what I should watch next.

It isn't just that it's dark. It's that Shinji is far more believable as a protagonist than Kouta and struggles a ton. The monsters were threatening as hell too. It was so fucked up. Like that little girl who's father kidnapped Shimada which got Shinji thrown in jail. That was a great little plot that showed just how much the monsters in the show messed with the world. Reiko kicks ass too.

Ryuki kind of ruined itself to me due to going for an almost "episodic" format for its Riders, where you've got a core group and then one guest Rider that dies before the next one is introduced during most of the show. The next poster replies, claiming a disagreement with the first 20 episodes being "amazing," focusing on disliking Shinji's reluctance to fight. That is when you can call for a "subject change."

The next reply follows up on this, going on with the discussion about Shinji and disagreeing with the negative view the second poster wrote about it, explaining how Shinji was only against fighting and killing people, but was completely fine with fighting monsters.

But that's completely false. He actually only agreed to become a Rider because it let him try and fight and stop monsters - who at the time were the main actors in killing people. People liek Asakura weren't even a thought yet, and once actual in-fighting picks up, Shinji begins to interfere more and try to make sure as few people die as possible.

But because this was when Kamen Rider shows were allowed to have protagonists who aren't 100% right about important matters and knew exactly what to do, so of course this random journalist was not gonna be able to save everyone and they make it a point to show his idealism isn't perfect.

One of the big points of Ryuki, as stated by the producers, is that justice is "subjective" and everyone has their own version of it, and in the show no one gets exactly what their justice entails.
