/a/ pleb here. I saw this chart today and I have a question.

How should I start getting into mecha, /m/? I've barely watched any mecha series. Should I start with the basics like Tetsujin 28 and 0079, or just watch whatever? The descriptions of Macross, FLAG, and GaoGaiGar that I've read really appeal to me, though I'd like to watch the others eventually either way.
>>
watch stuff you think looks cool
don't waste time trying to like stuff you don't like
>>
>>14548290
if you want to get into gundam, i would recommend war in the pocket

>The descriptions of Macross, FLAG, and GaoGaiGar that I've read really appeal to me, though I'd like to watch the others eventually either way.

Well then, do just that. There's no specific order needed to watch mecha series.
>>
>>14548309
i donĀ“t know,
you should probably watch gundam from some kind of order
>>
>>14548290
Really, mecha is too diverse to give a general recommendation. There is no one show I can point to and say "watch this to see if you'll be into mecha"

The closest thing to that would probably be Gunbuster, but even then, Gunbuster has almost nothing in common with stuff like Tetsujin, Big O, FSS, and so forth. So as with anything else, just watch whatever appeals to you.

Actually OP, it'd help if you'd be specific about what it is you want out of a mecha show

I know jack shit about your tastes, especially with you being interested in three very different shows, but if you were to narrow things down by asking something like "what's a good mecha show with fantasy elements?", it'd be much easier to give you an answer.
>>
>>14548324
>Avoid Patlabor
What?
>>
>>14548324
Always do the opposite of what /m/ says.
>>
>>14548368
I was curious how important the classics are for my overall enjoyment of the entire genre. I mean, mecha's diverse, but it started somewhere, no? I haven't done that with any other genre, so I was wondering what the whole board dedicated to it thought. I wasn't looking for recs per se, but you have a point, so I might as well.

I generally dislike monster-of-the-week series and I'm not a fan of series that always have a dark tone. As an example, I genuinely loved LoGH. I thought it had a really good mix of light-heartedness and drama. I'd want something that has that kind of balance, where the action and drama don't overtake the more mundane moments.

>I generally dislike monster-of-the-week series

If that's the case, you would have never gotten into mecha if you had planned to start from the beginning. Pretty much every mecha show made in the 1970s is MotW.

In fact, I want to say that that's probably something you should get used to if you want to watch mecha, especially if you're interested in GaoGaiGar. Many of the series that are worth watching (if not the majority) involve episodic storytelling in some way or another and I think you do yourself a disservice by dismissing these out of hand. Many shows are worth watching on the strength of their creative fight scenes alone.
>>
>>14548391
You'll avoid a lot of headache if you follow this advice OP.
>>
>>14548569
/m/ is never consistent about almost anything, so paying attention to it only causes headaches.

The only things we seem to all agree upon is that SEED Destiny sucks and that Dai-Guard is amazing. And people even dispute those from time to time.
>>
>>14548534
HELL YEAH

>>14548559
I figured as much. I generally dislike MoTW shows, but it really depends on how much I enjoy the characters/setting/tone/etc outside of that. I should've clarified probably. I've watched quite a few that I have liked. I'm sure I'll get used to it. As long as there's some sort of overarching narrative/theme in the end, I'm good. I just don't enjoy MoTWs when that's all there is to a series, so it depends.

no

Simple logic, anon. Use conjuction.

Gundam is bad OR Eureka seven is for plebs OR Kill La Kill is not mecha.

... then apply negation.

Gundam is good AND Eureka Seven is not for plebs AND Kill La Kill is mecha (sort of).

>>14548290
The list is decent and as long as you enjoy good animation, you shouldn't have problems even with older shows.
If Monster of the week format doesn't suit your taste, avoid toy commercial shows.
Once you get through a good few of the shows, it would not be a bad idea to give TTGL a rewatch since you'll now see the ginormous amount of mecha heritage that is everywhere in that show, replicating plot lines, putting in guest characters, recreating scenes down to colors.

Today on learning about Nadesico!

Considering the show Nadesico is, they were most likely fairly intent on parodying Gubuster's science lessons but ended up making something even funnier.

It's not top tier but for all its stumbling about, the show sure delivers in spades.

I can see why would people not like it per say but I still believe not at least trying it would mean missing out.
>>
>>14555692
It's not, of course.
But it is very much like a super robo anime, even Trigger staff commented on it saying they had to " try very hard not to make it mecha outright."

Yes, it lacks some of the great things that make the super-robo anime enjoyable but overall, most of it would feel right at home if you switched those dresses for some machinery and adjusted the action sequences.
