Honestly, I think ARIEL is too silly for today's anime market. It's like the giant robot version of Samurai Flamenco, and we all know how well that show did.

I'd say it's not silly enough for its time.
There's wacky SOL shenanigans and then all of a sudden BOOM, the characters will start acting like Shinji out of nowhere.
