Tobeyo Gandamu's a bit of a hard sell for Americans when the show's a war drama, since there's that disconnect that 'war dramas aren't for kids.'
Still the OST was pretty good overall, so the combat theme with Toonami graphics works well enough. Brad Swaile's pretty great IMO.

Nah, that was just part of Toonami's branding, doing custom openings. It also shaved some time to show more commercials to impressionable kids.

Anime outside toonami did get their OPs played regularly, though I don't remember if 0079 got it when it was put on Adult Swim.

The most amusing case has to be Hamtaro. Even TOM had to take pause at that one.

You know thinking back to it, Mobile Suit Gundam is still a damn fine anime that holds up pretty well in terms of story telling. Sure the animation is dated, but story was pretty damn good and rivals a lot of stories today that aim to overcomplicate things and drop wicked sick twists.
>>
>>14499373

Everyone was hype as fuck and then it flopped because we expected it to be another Wing. While I like MSG now, Gundam X would've been a better choice as a follow up.
>>
>>14501213
I actually really like the song, but the visuals are nonsensical without the pretense of a music video, and the sound effects ruin it.

How anyone can prefer this to Toki o Koete is completely beyond me.
>>
>>14499305
Toonami always made custom idents for their shows, primarily so that they could fit the broadcasting schedule for their advertisers. But they were always pretty damn good at editing video packages. Hell, they had Sunrise asking them to use their TV promos as their official DVD trailers, since Toonami's were better than anything they could come up with.

True. Just started watching it, its pretty cool how Amuro and the rest of the kids become cold harded murderers killing Zeon motherfuckers with no remorse early on the series it really shows how war affects all the characters in a fairly realistic way for a 70s kids anime.

It's very different from Mazinger Z and similar Super Robot shows even if they have around same levels of violence, Mazinger Z is less serious and has a lot of more humor.

I like that the stupid robot that walks with his eyes was sidelined early on, I was afraid it could be a forced comedy relief character to make the series more kid friendly that would pop up and quip every minute.

Char is more likable than Amuro, Am I alone?

Where I live we only got Gundam Wing dubbed and for some reason I couldn't follow the plot of that show very well even if I tried back in the day, it was a boring drama honestly apart from the opening that made it look like a more action-oriented show.
>>
>>14501198
Cybertron had some issues, but it had one of the best Optimus Prime vs Megatron/Galvatron final fights in the entire franchise(only better one that comes to mind is the one they have in the final issue of The Transformers vs GI Joe)
>>
>>14501431
Thanks to Gundam Breaker 3, I'm going back and re-watching the Gundam shows I grew up with, and you're right about Wing being hard to follow when you're young. The enemy organization splits into opposing halves like four times throughout the series and fights each other using the same mobile suits for the most part, and the Gundam pilots' goals are intentionally nebulous until the final battle against White Fang. I think I just watched it at the time because I thought Duo was awesome.

It's funny, I still think it's a pretty decent show, but it doesn't hold up as well as I remembered it. The faction-splitting I mentioned before just ends up dragging out the conflict so it can get to 48 episodes, and most of the characters aren't very likable. Still glad I finally went back to it, though.

Mostly was anime for teenagers but all uncensored and all dubbed, they also got South Park , Duckman and other western shows.

The channel was bought by Sony to turn it into Animax where they showed a lot of anime too but it flopped and disappeared in 1 year or so.

In Latin America dubbed anime on traditional TV networks, both on open air and cable is dead forever since circa 2005, I guess people here got used to the idea anime is """"free""""" because it was extremely common between the 70s to the mid 2000s both in cable and in local TV stations and just pirate everything through fansubs and local TV stations are not interested in buying anime anymore and licence companies don't want to lose money acquiring and dubbing shows nobody will see the legal way. The only anime I've seen on cable is DB Kai on CN and Yokai Watch on Disney.

Even western cartoons for kids on open air TV networks are dead, local channels are just showing trashy shows for low educated people and telenovelas.

Yeah but that at least try to shoehorn in some kind of rationality into why 3-story robots are the most viable form of strategic combat, but a motorcycle battleship would make Cobra Command snicker

so then training wheels at the ultimate add on for it them

MSG was dubbed before Wing, it's just Wing was shown first.

Was discussing with my brother about the Americanized versions of Japanese shows like Saber Rider/Bismark, Mach Go Go Go/ Speed Racer , Voltron/Go Lion and so on and about how the Japanese counterparts sometimes are practically unknown in their native country, the changes on the music and violence and we recalled and discussed the different versions of Gatchaman, the first version with the retarded gay robot we didn't got to see because I wasn't born yet, G Force that was rerun in the 90s so we got to see that one and Eagle Riders that I don't remember watching either.

I wonder, if they hadn't screwed the pooch, would Sunrise have produced a Gundam series designed to cater to American audiences? Something with a team of Gundams of course, but what theme could they explore?
>>
>>14522325
world police
defeating evil
sports
>>
>TFW you never grew up with Toonami because you're from Canada
>>
>>14522332
>World police defeating evil sports
Gundam Homerun
Gundam Slam Dunk
Gundam Touchdown
It could work.

With Maxter being the old chief who goes into action when the rest of the team is about to lose?
>>
>>14522325
>but what theme could they explore?

Glorify war instead of denounce it.
Lots of explosions everywhere, G.I.Joe style.
Most likely written by someone from the west.

Lots of eagles everywhere.
At least one jab at nuking the Japs.

>Something remotely associated to modern Japan even attempting to place warfare on a pedestal

>A writer actually considering career suicide strongly enough to insert a 'two bombs weren't enough' joke

It's not every day you see posts as silly as this.

Actually it went Wing then 0079 then G. They also aired 08th ms team at night when they started 0079 and later showed 0080 and then 0083 on AS. I remember being pissed when G came out because I had a huge boner for Uc and wanted to see Zeta but ended up loving G anyway.

They did.

Actually I was talking about making a jab in the way that you so often see in anime where they have the evil bad use totally not nuke on totally not Japanese and then have everyone shudder in horror at how inhuman notUS expy is.

Quick example from is Escaflowne where they just so happen to make an atomic bomb for the final encounter and everyone, villains and heroes alike say just how inhuman it is and how it has nothing to do with warfare.

It was pretty on-par for dubs of the era, but I'm watching it dubbed now so I can have it on in the background, and I really like Char's voice.
>>
>>14523298
I remember being disappointed in G Gundam when it first aired, because I was an edgy teenager and I just didn't "get it," so I just considered it goofy trash until much later.

>>14523396
Was that really meant for Americans? Everyone I ever talked to about that show fucking hated it.

Which is the official position of all nukes possessing countries on Earth including the US.

Official NATO policy is to never use nuclear weapons FIRST, only in retaliation.

Using nuclear weapons on civilian targets is widely considered unethical.

The MGS dub was the one time they got Haro right. I don't know why they could never do it again

American/Japan co-production.

Aired in America months before it landed in Japan.

>G was a perfect second choice and did very well
It did "OK" not as well as Wing or Unicorn the outliners but along the linesof everything else.

>call dub one of the best

Its almost like they had different ADR directors for each dub which brought different performances out of the same actors.

I guess they just picked a bad time slot for it. It probably would have gone over better if it aired on Saturday mornings instead of being in-between Dragonball Z and Outlaw Star.

This. Just because Mark Gareth was told to act like a robot, he was given so much heat by fans he supposedly swore off Gundam.
