Just focusing on EoE, there's multiple characters watching over Asuka and putting her into safety. Remember that Asuka starts EoE as a comatose fuckdoll who can't talk, move or do anything whatsoever on her own. Then NERV is under attack, Asuka is hunted, but Misato/NERV takes steps to safeguard her, a pilot who officially has lost her "piloting license" and can't even pilot any more.
She gets put inside EVA02 and NERV spends their near last dying breath putting her into safety.

But it's not over, in the meantime for the first time ever, out of nowhere, EVA02 suddenly reaches out to Asuka (despite having plenty of opportunity to do so earlier), and activates some mega-power-boost.

Then she fights the MP-EVAs, and the MP-EVA's are fine with charging her one by one, and in some cases standing entirely still waiting to be slaughtered.

Of course Asuka dies in the end, but wait - she gets raptured into NGE's equivalent of human heaven and thus survives anyway. How convenient that the world would end at that moment so she'd be tang anyway.

Yes. And then even the people who died before instrumentality began had their bodies dissolve into tang. We get a whole montage of the clothes of people we saw die before, in the same positions as we last saw them, with tang everywhere and ghost-Rei's standing over them. They got hoovered up into instrumentality too.

Asuka didn't get saved miraculously by dying just as Instrumentality was starting. She could have died an hour before that and still gotten sucked up into Instrumentality, just like everyone else.

Secondly, there is a problem. While it's not exactly out of character for Misato to look out for others, it's convenient in terms of plot. Now if this was the only thing, it'd be all right, but the conveniences keep adding up.

There's EVA02 deciding to activate it's power at that moment, despite never doing it before, and activating some never-seen before powerup. That's awfully convenient and contrived, and there's a lot of weird things going on like Asuka suddenly understanding something she had never previously given any thought. At this stage the character is rapidly deteriorating and becoming a plot device, which it eventually becomes.

The MP-EVA's arrive, and the weird bit is that they don't tear her apart immediately. Nor do they even engage her first, or fight back initially. While the fight scene is cool, it's obvious that's it's staged, as realistically the MP-EVA's would simply tear her into pieces with no problem.

All of this is "out of character" and destructive to suspension of disbelief, providing a problem. Well, unless you're just there for the mecha fights, it's OK to say so.

All in all, it gave up on Asuka's character and made it a plot device to make Shinji emit a scream.

Asuka is in the worst, most vulnerable state possible when she's at the bottom of the lake and she finally opens herself up to the call her mother had been making the whole time.
She finally listened and realized she wasn't just moving around a huge machine, but was in touch with her "lost" mother the whole time.
This is what gives her the boost to stand up and fight.
Not that it does her any good in the end.

This "wakeup" and "realization" is basically without foundation, and is awfully convenient to happen at the time it happens. Like said earlier, it's an asspull and a contrivance of plot. A character that was completely unable to do that, and an EVA that was (even in similar scenarios) unable to act.

The truth is that they skipped the characterization in order to move the plot along, and even with characterization it'd be one hell of an 180 in the previous characterization to get there.

ITT: Assmad Asukafags who only watched Evangelion for the waifus and can't grasp basic techniques in storytelling, along with potential fallpit.

The difference between Asuka and the rest is that Asuka nearly 100% of the time does reckless things that'd get anyone else straight up murdered - she relies primarily on the protection of others and gets along like that. She has strong protection to survive, since the plot requires her at a later stage, and in fact, to die so that Shinji will be shocked. To get around the issue of how she'd actually get there, they needed to reshuffle some pieces, throw in some asspulls here and there. In doing so, it also means they abandon the heavy character focus and development, by simply wishing into existence some life into a character that was just previously catatonic. (By adding an unprecedented trait in her EVA).

Basically, it's just as bad as if you took episodes 24 and 25 and cut out everything except the congratulations scene.

If any of these waifufags had at all tried to understand the show, they'd see that Asuka is just that type of character - tries to appear confident, but in the end can't do anything and needs others to take care of her. Basic moe 101 really.
