It's a Warp Field and it's a barrier.
The problem is in OG2, no attacks can pierce barriers on their own (I heard the Shishioh Blade can though but that's just hearsay) except combination attacks, which barriers flat out can't activate against.
That property of combination attacks got renamed into Barrier Nullify from OGs on, Barrier Pierce lets the barrier activated, and then flat out punches through it.

Multiple types of Gespensts were around by OG1, I can think of at least 8 (Type 1 S, Type 1 R, Type 2 S, Type 2 R, the one from the Compacts, the one from the Alphas, Alt Eisen, and Weissritter) but there were probably more in side games. By OG1 there were four types of Grungusts (1, 2, 3, Kai) as well as a modified Type 3 and a combining robot that had Grungust elements. By OG1 there were at least 6 types of Huckebeins (Type 1, Type 2, EX, Type 3, Type 3 Boxer Frame, Type 3 Gunner Frame). They formed the backbone of early OG because they already had a bunch of variants out there before the games.
