The movies are pretty great, in some ways better than the show because there is less filler. Takes things in enough of a different direction that they are sort of their own thing, with valid points both for and against it being the superior telling. Certainly worth a watch.

Zero is the epitome of wasted potential. It started off ok but just got worse episode after episode. Also, Shin and Sara are both bad characters.

7 is too long and takes too many episodes to get going. If you chopped off the first 20 episodes and increased the animation budget, it might be a decent show.

That's so gross a simplification I almost threw up. By that logic, Macross 7 was just the same fleet of VF-11s getting blown up and SDF was the same fleet of VF-1s getting blown up. Jesus, the hyperbole on this one.

Well yea, there are probably already dozens of NUNs/NUG planets already, so having a fleet than can conquer a planet is nothing really. Hell, in Delta the Windies have already conquered half a dozen or more and they had to hijack folks to do instead of using a fleet. A PMC formed from a proper space going civilization and with a lot of money and connections will obviously have a lot more than some world just getting to grips with the that same tech and starting their expansion.

The visuals were okay, but its plot and characters are mediocre at best. Its narrative is of the same stock of dozens of other anime shows. People looking for something more meaningful are not going to find it because it's completely superficial in what it does. It's full of wacky anime archetypes and hamfisted melodrama. Macross F plays it very by-the-numbers to the point that it becomes predictable to people who've seen enough anime.

Macross F showcases its production value well, but how good the show is depends entirely upon what the individual thinks about the anime genre as a whole. You either like seeing the same stereotypes and plots playout over and over again and think Frontier's production value makes it a good show. Or you see as completely unoriginal and forgettable among the shows that are just like it.

Pretty much all Macross series are. The originality usually comes in how they use these archetypes. Frontier did something interesting, for example, by basically resolving the love triangle like halfway through the show (even though the last episode pretended it wasn't already over to maintain the illusion), and then having the rest of the show focus mostly on the space war caused by the music producer of all people.

I won't deny that Frontier had some very stupid moments, like that part where they tried to replicate Roy's death with Ozma. I just don't think they dragged the show down. What is probably a bigger problem for Frontier is that it has no real standout moments other than perhaps the last episode, which was pretty incredible. But other than that, there's not much to get excited over. The plot twists all centered around characters we knew nothing about, so there was no way they could have gone against our expectations.

SDF and DYRL is a borderline case if only because they were released before the things they did were really recognizable as cliches. But yeah, you have a passive, indecisive male protagonist, a charming, ditzy, brainless love interest, a cool older mentor figure who goes on to die, perhaps the very first instance of UNDERSTANDING and so on.

Frontier just has a problem with being too mainstream for its own good. It's not "bad," it just doesn't do anything different. It's victim to all the silly tropes that have plagued anime for the last couple of decades. The only thing that helps separate it from other things is its production value.

I can't speak anything about the movies as I haven't seen them yet. Maybe some day if I feel like 100%-ing the franchise.

I can't say it felt terribly different from SDF to me, which makes sense seeing as a number of episodes retreaded the same scenarios that were in SDF.

It was like Kawamori finally got bored with trying to do new things and just decided to go back to his roots. But the problem was that everything he had done in SDF had since become trite.
