They don't need to look any more "hardcore". They look nice and simple. You can recognize then amd separate then from the Gundam easily despite sharing much of the same basic design aspects.

Why is the GM III's visor different in Unicorn? In ZZ and CCA they're more oval shaped but in Unicorn it has an upside down T shape.

Gm II was an all around improvement over the regular gm that didn't require a new frame to be designed and could be applied to existing GMs. The reason they sucked so bad in zeta is they had been around a couple of years by then and there was a tech jump.
