While I can't say anything for 64 or R, most of those games just adapt bits and pieces, they don't really use much of the plot.

Ok, let's talk Cross Ange backstory. Gather round, those of you who aren't watching the show, because this is important details and will show up in V.

Long ago, there was Earth. Earth was filled with idiots and they all killed each other THE END.

Wait let me start again.

Long ago, there was Earth. On Earth, a science experiment that had something to do with parallel universes or something (I don't remember) fucked up, and some guy got stuck in the land between universes. That gave him a lot of bullshit powers, and after linking his soul to a giant robot, he decided to pretend he was a god (..."Pretend" might be stretching that given his absurd power set) and called himself Embryo.

He manipulated Earth to blow itself up all Rau Le Creuset style, except in this case it worked. Given only a few people left, he gave overtures to what was left of Earth, putting them on a new Earth, where they could stop wars foreeeeeeever (and he could get a harem because he's a fucking horny bastard who mind controls and shit.). All those people got excessive genetic modifications to allow them to manipulate certain types of energy caused by a radioactive material that Earth had been overusing called Dracunium and do a couple really weird things like always have internet access somehow. (look I dunno.)

Meanwhile, back on Earth 1, a bigass white dragon named Aura shows up. The people still there were trying to clear out radioactive material because it's their fucking HOME and they want it clean, and Aura goes "ok, this is cool, but you know how you could do it better? Modify yourselves to be dragons, none of that shit can touch you." Earth got on this whole genetic modification bullshit, and started turning themselves into dragons, and all was fairly well. They had a decent society, even, if one with a severe lacking in men - seriously it's like a 1/10 ratio of men to women AT BEST.

I have a hard time trusting the person or people behind Destiny to do a story involving plot points like genetic or racial differences with anything resembling tact or forethought.

Embryo really didn't like the fact that EARTH WAS DOING GENETIC MODIFICATION AND THE PEOPLE ARE LIVING NICELY... AND I'M NOT THE ONE WHO DID IT AND I CAN'T FUCK THEM! so he decided he was going to stop that. Given low Dracunium levels on his planet, and the fact that they were eating the shit to clear it out, he just kidnapped Aura using his giant robot and a few others like it, the Ragnamails. He then shoved her under the giant tower at the center of their civilization and used her as a giant battery.

The dragons took offense to this, and started crossing over so they could get Aura back (and hopefully kill Embryo in the process). But on Earth 2, there was another problem forming for Embryo - some girls were being born with an inability to use Mana, and given that he set this entire society up on Mana, this was A Bad Thing. So he did the totally correct thing and catered to their disabilities so they could learn to still be functional members of society and hahahahahahahaha yeah right. Instead of that, he instilled an instinctive fear and hatred of these new beings - dubbed Normas - and threw them on a fucking rock with a couple gimped MP Ragnamail sort of things and told them that the only way they could make their living now was to fight the sudden Dragon outbreaks off. Or rather, the governments of the Earth did, he did it through them because he's controlling everything from behind the curtain.

So the Dragons are invading to get their big leader Dragon back, the Normas are stuck on a shitty island incapable of fighting back, and all is good for Embryo... in theory. Unfortunately for him, there were a few older humans on Earth who never got modified and were thus technically Norma by that manner. They stole a Ragnamail and got a KICKIN RAD battleship, but were incapable of knocking off Embryo because he's kind of immortal, and they took it to the island of Norma, and the Norma on that day began preparing a rebellion.

Oh, and they used the dragons they killed as extra batteries, since Aura wasn't an infinite power source (just really, really powerful - all the dragons are, but she and some of the males who got transformed can use very powerful magic themselves. Gravity, fire, big barrier shields, little light things, a lot of interesting shit.


Oh and there's also the explanation of how Norma came to be, but I refuse to talk about it because I will not acknowledge it as anything even close to potentially accurate. It's FUCKING STUPID and I will not.

There's a lot of bad stuff in the early mid show, (Ange acting like Mist Rex in his finest moments, half the people ostensibly on the same side trying to kill each other and giving me bad Tobikage flashbacks, some setting oddities that end up getting explained later like what the fuck is up with everyone's reactions to Normas, Tusk before he starts actually acting like the crazy mercenary ninja he is), but it does have its moments, and honestly it starts getting better... around the time Salamandine shows up for the first time, actually. That's when a lot more of the setting details start showing up.

Overall it's not particularly good, but it's sort of like 0083/Unicorn/whatever else bad - totally watchable, and there are things you'll probably enjoy, but there's enough bad to outweigh the good. It's not one of those things that's offensively "WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD FUCKING IDEA" bad - usually - there's no absurd stupid plotholes or whatever, and a lot of its worse aspects smooth over eventually. Except Embryo. You'll really want to fucking punch Embryo's face in by the end.
