There's lots of skills with animation that won't help you in comics. Like layout, or conveying motion, or choosing what should be in each panel, etc. But there's no denying there's lots of overlap.

For money/time, comics are right in the sweet spot. The cheapest media is books. You can do ANYTHING with that and it costs nothing. Next are comics. Then animation. Then live action.

His influence is clearly 80's OVAs. But comics, especially black/white manga are filled with shading. You can have as much or as little as animation.
