Otaking's R-Type thing i s done.

It needs more cheesy one-liners, though.

He should really work on facial expression and body language.
>>
Very cool.

I'm looking forward to /v/'s reaction to this.
>>
>>14247686
I think the problem is that he makes everything too smooth which makes it look inhuman. Facial expressions are already hard though so I can cut him a little slack on those. I wish he'd practice on those before he makes another animation but good on him for what he's doing.
>>
>>14247686
I'll take the games over his works, thanks
>>
I like it.
>>
>>14247712

The R-9's looking quite nice under Otaking's shading crazy. Quite nice, though the dialogues exceptionally cheesy, especially with what I've come to expect with super serious R-Type entries like Delta.

Makes me wonder a bit what would happen if her did something based on Delta's last stage. That would be a thing a horrible, disgusting beauty.

>>
>>14247686
I think I'd prefer this without the dialog or any of the arcade stuff. If it was more like the star wars one, about some nameless pilot/s taking on the first stage, I would like it more. Shame, R-Type is my favorite game series.

>>14247712
They're too busy talking about overwatch and doom.
>>
>>14247686
How do I sign up to be Otaking's assistant? What aspects should I train at to be noticed by senpai?
>>
>>14248426
Bitch constantly about today's SHADING.
>>
>>14248460
that's entirely legitimate
>>
I appreciate Otaking's views on SHADING.

But what are his opinions on FLOOF? Cause that's almost as important.
>>
Dobkeratops head doesn't move like a rubber bag anymore. That's nice.
>>
How does a guy who sucks at R-Type arcade instantly know how to pilot an actual ship?
>>
>>14248578
Because actual piloting is easier than playing R-Type.

He did lose to the first boss, though.
>>
>>14248578
He knows how to beat the level, just not the boss.
>>
>>14248927

Gradius and Parodius are better games than R-Type.
>>
>>14249061
Ok.
>>
>>14247756

R-Type is for the weak.

Gradius. Is. Superior.
>>
I'm far more formidable than Dobkeratops.

Hehehe....
>>

Are you just going to make this off topic response to every post in the thread one by one?
>>
>>14249113

It's 4chan. Everyone makes off topic responses on here. Why so sensitive?
>>
>>14249121
There's a difference between a conversation about cartoon robots slowy drifting off into a conversation about futa dicks and someone just coming into a thread about cartoon robots and suddenly screaming "FUTA DICKS!" over than over.

That's an hyperbolized hypothetical, but hopefully you get the point.

Well Gradius was the OG and the inspiration for R-Type.

I think literally everyone on the dev team loved Gradius.

I have mixed feelings now that it's out.
I really need to git gud at character animation but the deadline was really tight and ballooned from two months to five just to get it to this state.
MASHED are a pretty understanding bunch!

OtaKing, will you be doing Darius next?

Pretty much all character animation so I'll have no excuse this time.

Even so, I like it... Will it be airing on the TV channels or is it web only?
>>
>>14250514
Yeah, the /m/ animations were pretty solid. But I do agree you need to work on your character expressions. Also Dialogue and voice acting need some work, though I suspect that's not your job.

Pretty impressive, but I find it is too comedy like, although R-Type is actually a horror action game.
Should have kept more atmosphere more sinister, instead of adding all this teenage trash talk.
Not using any dialogue at all, and only focus on the mecha/ships/monsters etc would have been better imo

Even though, I have to admit that scene where he "I literally can't see shit" gave me a good chuckle.
As an R-Type fan I always was wondering about how the pilot actually can see anything with the force pod right in front of his view.
>>
>>14247686
That is not real R-Type ship.

Pilot is supposed to be man half machine connected inside.
>>
>>14251494
>Pretty impressive, but I find it is too comedy like, although R-Type is actually a horror action game.
>Should have kept more atmosphere more sinister, instead of adding all this teenage trash talk.

That was only when they arrived at R-Type Delta.

So stuff it.
>>
>>14252726
No, R-Type always has been a horror game. I just find the whole teeny trash talk atmosphere in the vid doesn't fit to the game.
>>
How the fuck do I emulate it? I really want to play R-Type but I can't find a "proper version" anywhere. I'm getting confused by all the ports to the Sega Master system and M.A.M.E. and shit. Can someone help me?
>>
>>14252785
How can you be so confused? It's an arcade game, get MAME and the game, and play.
>>
>>14252723
No that was only for some ships. I think they were introduced in Delta.

>>14252785
1 and 2 are almost everywhere. Delta is for PS1, 3 is for SNES and is one of my favorites, Leo is MAME, and finally Final is for PS2. Final literally has a fuck ton of ships that you can play as.

Disappointed to be honest. Was expecting something a bit more meaty based on the footage he put up earlier. Although the idea of players being sucked into the games they play isn't a new idea, it's not a bad one if executed properly. But whatever Ota uses for animatics for the action sequences is bar none (Or however he draws up how the scenes play out). The voice acting and script was terrible though. It has potential, the video just feels unfulfilling. To nitpick, I don't think the standard shots should have been able to penetrate the Dobkeratops' exoskeleton since they just do no damage in the game.

>>14249100
>>14249061
Truth, if Otaking should have done video on Salamander, if he wanted to really scratch that 1980's anime hyper gore itch I was seeing with what happened with the Scant, Cancers and the Dobkeratops. Or X-Multiply if he's just an Irem fanboy.

But can the power of shading do the first level of Salamander/Lifeforce justice? There'd be so many different things pulsating, it wouldn't be funny. And that's not even getting to the battle against Golem
>>
>>14252844
>But can the power of shading do the first level of Salamander/Lifeforce justice?
I forget if they had the budget for it to wiggle in the OVAs
>>
>>14252853
The actual scenes that included the levels of the game went by extremely fast so no pulsating. However, the scene was done in such a way that the background would need to be redrawn for almost every frame. Although it really didn't have much of an organic feel either due to the colors not being washed out. Plus the bosses they did show all went out like pansies.
>>
>>14252801
Thank you for the clarity.

>>14252790
I was just getting confused by all the different versions and didn't know which one I should go for, the other anon cleared it up very well. I've had contact with Super R-Type before but didn't know what was going on with it, so I never pushed to finish it. Now I can, starting with 1. Thanks guys!
>>
>>14252976
Yeah Super R-Type is just 2.
>>
>>14252988
No. It's a wonkyass version of 1 and 2 combined.
2 is pretty much only on arcade. Also 2 is the one with the brains in a jar.
>>
>>14253013
Oh yeah its been like 10 years since I have played Super R-Type.

>>
>>14247686

Very nicely animated for the most part though.
>>

>>
>>14252853
The OVAs were terrible except for the music. You could tell they didn't really have any budget. A lot of it was just talking.

>>
>>14250514
So did Irem actually get in contact with you?

Can you tell us anything about that?
>>
>>14252736
The premise looks like it's supposed to be "arcade guy gets sucked into video games" rather than "faithful adaptation of the game's story" to me. May not fit the tone of the game itself but it sounds about right for this sort of thing.

Not to say they couldn't do both. But it works well enough in a cheesy 80's cartoon way.

What's the point of SHADING if your backgrounds are always blatantly CG and if your colors are garish?

I would really like to do a 100% faithful, super depressing grimdark R-Type in the future sometime, complete with the pilots being absorbed and becoming Bydo at the end. I'd even make the Japanese fans happy by having the pilots be just brains or small girls or dudes without limbs. But first thing's first.

>>14251017
>How much did they pay you?
I cannot reveal such details! Though I will say that it takes me so long to finish something (5 months for 3 minutes of R-Type in this case) that it does really stretch my paycheques. I don't have a car, family, pension or mortgage or anything so I can pretty much survive, but if I had any of those then 2D animation just wouldn't be a viable living, I don't think. I intend to stay irresponsible and immature forever though if I can.

>if only otaking had spent all that time bitching about shading actually learning how to shade and more importantly animate instead

>>14254765
IREM sent a message via Twitter asking if they could put the in-progress footage on their Twitter page.

To be honest, what I generally do when I have someone like my long-suffering girlfriend offering to help is I'll do all the linework for a sequence, completely colour and shade the first frame, send them the file and then they colour the rest of the frames using the one I did as a guide. It's seriously boring work though and not glamorous at all.

>>14265755
>What's the point of SHADING if your backgrounds are always blatantly CG and if your colors are garish?

I'm not sure what i can do about the colours since i steal them from anime screenshots, but the backgrounds being obvious 3D is a problem, yeah...
But to do them Macross-style would take so many years that I don't have... I do want to get everything looking as hand drawn as possible though.

The good:
>ship and enemy animations
>anything R-type

The bad:
>the protagonist
>the premise of going inside the game
>the human animations
>the voice acting
>the dialogue

His animation can't do humans very well. So he should just skip it. Have people sitting or standing if need be. Focus just on the ship action.
>>
>>14268462
Or he should keep working on it to get better? You know, this thing artists and animators are supposed to do?
>>
>>14268319
I wonder if anyone actually has the name crabstick on Xbox Live yet.
>>
>>14268468

If he's going to do humans:

>use other techniques
>have other people animate it

He can just be a ship or mech guy. There's nothing wrong with that. 3D rotoscoping doesn't work for organic movements.
>>
>>14268462
What's wrong with the vidya premise
>>
>>14268524

The framing device wasn't really needed, and takes away from it. It just shows that the R-Type world is fake. Plus the execution wasn't great (bad dialogue, annoying guy). Remove the guy's dialogue and the intro and it's a 10/10 short.

I love the way the camera moves around the pilot and through the cockpit, it give more dynamism to the fight scenes, which are quite well choreographed.
Also, if the character animation aren't the highlight of this short, the close-up were excellent ! Especially on the eyes and mainly the hands while piloting the way all that moves was just great. I also like the chara-design, the shading and some shots were particularly well lighted.

But that's true the dialogues are quite bad, as the overhall story, but that's not that important, this two shot alone were enough to compensate.
>>
>>14268560
yeah i think short shots where you see the character can actually work

when they're on the screen for more than a few seconds it kind of falls apart
>>
>>14247686
it's really nice and stylish except for anything involving the humans whatsoever (who looked kind of bad overall, was really hoping he'd improve on that)

I really liked seeing how well Dobkeratops came out, hot damn.
Loved seeing all the little details throughout, too.

the voices+plot are awful, but I can't blame otaking for that

>>14249061
see, I can't accept that, at least not regarding R-Type 1
R-Type's design is pretty much "we've played Gradius, but how do we make it better?"

they up the default movement speed (hell, the movement speed isn't even remotely as important, why the fuck are you going out to battle in the slowest ship possible)
the checkpoints in R-Type seem to have had some thought put into their location at all, and post-checkpoint survivability is a lot less variable
the Force is a brilliant design element
and hell, the stage design overall is better

as a series though, R-Type falls apart a bit compared to Gradius
R-Type 2 is obnoxiously difficult for no good reason (it's a pretty game though), and R-Type 3 has massive pacing issues. Leo isn't even really an R-Type game (it's fun, if a tad easier in some aspects and harder in others)
Delta is pretty damn good though, would put it up there next to R-Type 1
and then Final is... well, Final

We both know that's false anon

TIE Fighter got the views it did because it's Star Wars though.
In theory, exposure-wise anything else I do will be downhill from there.

Game of Thrones has robots and shading, right? It's a perfect fit for your next next project.

Not necessarily true. Maybe some eccentric millionaire will buy an animation studio and make you boss.

Robot dragons, robot crows, and a wall that combines into a city-sized mech piloted by bastards and rapists, yes.

It makes the situation less dangerous since it's not real. Ruins drama.

I'm still waiting for your mecha lesiban show. Just because it was a drunken 4chan rant doesn't mean you shouldn't do it.

>>14270617

You can build up an audience through producing work. Producing shorts based on popular series helps too.

It's called Iczer-1.

Will it have the parts of warframe /v/ likes?

aka the asses?

Asses might be too problematic though.

Maybe after the mech film. I just need one big hit and I'll have infinite money to animate cyborg lesbians at 22 frames per second with no regard to budget nor time constraints.

If you want hits, do a Metal Gear short.

Hey Ota, how much do you charge for projects? Is it by the minute?

Seeing the first two metal gears in motion would be nice. Has never been done.

I've never really worked it out as I've been under year-long contracts up until now, but looking around on google, various sites say that the cheapest rates are $1,500-$3,000 per minute.
Let me give it a go...

Working 6 days a week, 10 hours a day, R-Type took 5 months to do and was 3 minutes long. So at $1,500 per minute, that's $4,500 total, or $900 a month. So that works out at $4 an hour.
US minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.
I'm not saying MASHED paid me that little, by the way! I can't really divulge how much companies pay me since that's NDA stuff.

To meet minimum wage I'd have to double my rate to $3,000 per minute of animation. Which would sound like an insane amount to anyone wanting to hire me, I'd bet. As in, "An episode of anime is 25 minutes and this guy wants $75,000 for an episode!" kind of madness.

So you can kind of see why companies would prefer to pay for flash animation than frame-by-frame hand drawn stuff.
Or just outsource it to Korean slaves.

And yet no one bats an eyelash when Micheal Bay wants 99 billion dollars to film an hour and a half of things blowing up.

There is a slight difference between Otaking and Michael. Namely, I can ask my friends mother who Mr. Bay is and get a response beyond "what?"

And now I realize that hall of mirrors could look really fucking cool in an animated short, where it's not held back by game mechanics.

It's been a few months since I played, is the Simulor still hilariously broken in combination with that ability?
