Holy shit they didn't have Hayate literally murdering a guy end up becoming an eternal downer on his mood for like two-three episodes or bitch to somebody else about it. I'm honestly shocked

Hayate is going to be like Hikaru, Shin, and Isamu. He is just not going to give a fuck about killing the enemy.

I think Miramira is going to be more traumatized by getting dressed like an animal girl.

Hayate seems to sort of want the structure of his new soldiering profession after being a shiftless space hobo for so long. He just mosied right on past that 'it's a MC becomes a faggot for several episodes' phase that usually happens after first combat kill.

To be fair, Shin and Isamu were already soldiers by the time we see them in Zero and Plus.

Having PTSD after killing someone for the first time is what happens in real life. It's not a trope, it's realistic - especially if you can see the other guy's face or even a dead body after you kill him.

This is why modern military training focuses as much on indoctrinating you into a killing machine who doesn't see enemies as humans as it does on actual skills, and even with this PTSD still happens.
>>
>>14212088

It doesn't have anything to do with sense. Despite your internet posturing, whether you want to admit it or not your brain is wired by millions of years of evolution to not want to kill other humans. Punch them maybe, murder them no.

A big part of military training is spending weeks drilling soldiers on the mechanics of firing the gun at ambiguously human targets so that, when the time comes, muscle memory will do immediately what the human brain will normally flinch away from. And even with that, its still common for soldiers to (un)consciously shoot 'near' the enemy instead of at them, aiming to scare them off instead of kill them dead.

Some people don't have that natural resistance to taking a life, but that's almost always taken as a sign of being deeply disturbed or mentally unwell for a reason. That's a dangerous exception, not the rule.

And I'm sure that, right now, you think I'm just BSing you and you could totally pull that trigger and feel nothing like a stone cold badass. But thats like saying that you don't find the Xenomorph scary when you watch Alien. You are safe and removed from the danger. If you were just walking home one night and you saw a real live Xenomorph in the middle of the street, you would literally shit yourself in fear. That is 100% the appropriate response to that situation, logic be damned.
>>
>>14212294

Not quite true. The indoctrination is to overcome aversion to killing, since studies during WWII found that soldiers often postured and shot above the heads of enemies instead of at the enemy themselves because of said aversion and had been doing so throughout history by examination of documents, art etc. as well as interviews with veterans.

PTSD is on the rise specifically because more people kill now than used to due to that indoctrination, not regardless of it.
>>
>>14212027

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/23/us/drone-pilots-found-to-get-stress-disorders-much-as-those-in-combat-do.html?_r=0

There's a 3 year old article on it that finds drone operators get them at the same rate as normal soldiers. The stuff I've read says more, but I haven't seen it in a while and can't find it now, so that one may be more correct for all I know. There's even been documentaries and films made about the phenomenon.

>>14212692

We don't really know the exact reason why, but there's no denying it happens. We have lots of theories and even some good research on tackling it, but acting like it doesn't happen just because you don't understand it is silly.

Soldiers literally have to be trained to overcome an aversion to shooting people, even people they perceive as "the enemy". And doing so often leaves them with horrific mental scars that never heal if left alone. Even when they're killing from an air-conditioned room thousands of miles away using a joystick.

I'm not really sure what else you think is going on. People having some basic sense of morality and remorse doesn't and never has meant that they can't do bad things to other people if they perceive the cause to be solid enough, because it's only a basic sense - not a total one.
>>
>>14212915
ps dave grossman was wrong
>>
>>14212944

Nice proof. Not that it matters since (a) the US took his advice and started training soldiers with a view toward shooting to kill - which worked and (b) PTSD still says that people have an aversion to killing even if you don't want to believe Grossman for some reason.

I used to assume that if the Svs had ISC, holographic imaging, and fold capability, they'd have Ex-Gear accommodations too.

I mean, of all things, they lacked the one that was widely available to the public and should be the easiest to reverse-engineer for themselves even if they had no military examples to pick from. Then again there might not be widespread Ex-Gear usage in the sector, so there goes "public technology feedback."

It'll be a hoot if it turns out Windemere closed themselves off just before Ex-Gear made it into the sector's public market.

It's "Post-traumatic stress disorder", Anon. Survivors of the London Fire got it, people who got pounded by artillery in the trenches all day every day got it, survivors of terrorist attacks get it.

Going Rambo on crowds or torturing folks as a day-job are probably the least PTSD-inducing thing you can do as both activities can be made relatively stress-free to the perpetrator.

Oh yeah, because if there's anyone who didn't have PTSD, IT'S GOD DAMN RAMBO!

You're just embarrassing yourself.
>>
>>14214461

You do realize the stress in the name is what the patient goes through after the event, and not what causes the problem in the first place. Which isn't limited to, but does include, killing people. Which tends to be a traumatic event. Hence the trauma in post traumatic stress disorder.

Just because other things cause it doesn't mean killing isn't traumatic to a good chunk of people. Drone soldiers are probable the least stressed killers imaginable and they get it just as much as ground pounders.

So the Drakens don't have PPBs (as is evidenced by Da getting wrecked by a couple of shots from Hayate) but the VF-31s do. Are the Drakens technologically superior in any way or are they just VFs designed to take advantage of the heightened Windermerean physical capabilities?
>>
>>14216424

They probably do have pin point barriers - the tech has been around just on fighters at least 30 years by the time of Delta, long enough that they shouldn't not have it. notBellri just got caught by surprise because he was already kind of in over his head with Master Helman pushing him to make his first kill, so he wanted to get it right and just never noticed Hayate. The Drakens are at least superior in having drones attached by default, since only Chuck carries any in Delta Squad, and even then, only small non-combat ones.

>that apart from the faint main triangle (yes, he described it like that) there are a lot more triangles not limited to romantic love.

Beyond romantic love what other kind of triangle could you even have? Friendship, family and so on aren't exclusive relationships so don't require a singular choice to make a triangle.

I'm kind of guessing he's referring to Keith and Roid being two choices for Heinz for instance, but Heinz isn't even looking to make an active choice, at least as of now, and that kind of thing isn't really a triangle or exclusive to Macross. It's nothing new for anime full stop.

They aren't really jobbing or anything, its just that they end up fighting each other more than anything else. They show a 171 getting a kill and not instantly dying the second the knights show up, for what its worth..

I mean, that kill is on another 171...
>>
>>14219674
>Usually in fiction mercenaries are amoral assholes in contrast with the regular army.
In Macross they are there because NUNS can't deal with everything.

If they want forces that WILL come and help, paying a nearby PMC to reinforce your troops is the easiest way to ensure that reinforcements will definitely come.
Calling home does not necessarily mean that a fleet will come and help, and if they do come and help, they will probably be late because of the distance.

Outside of M7s fleet the spacy forces we see are low tier due to being irrelevant in the grand scope of things I would imagine the closer you get to earth the better equipped and trained they are. but that wouldn't make any difference if the guy your fighting can mind control ~80% of your forces. That's what he wants you to think

From my point of view, Mikumo is the mysterious, wise, mentor character who, through self-sacrifice, provides even more impetus for one of the MCs, Freyja in this case, to grow and improve.
Unless she ends up doing something else, like betraying the Delta Squadron & Walküre, I can't see anything else for her character to do.

At least, if anyone is going to die, it's Arad, the leader of Delta Squadron. He's probably going to be the Fokker to Kaname's Claudia, the signs are all there. Messer will have to step up and become less Spartan when he has to lead the Delta Squadron himself, and/or he's going to blame Hayate for it and Hayate will have to carry some of the burden for a few eps.

I don't know, I'm just thinking "out-loud" in typical anime tropes. I'd be really pleased if nothing I just mentioned happens, to be honest.

There is a noticeable difference, though, VF-11 stock footage arranged towards the end portrays them as putting up stiffer resistance against the Varauta than their absolutely atrocious showing at the start of the show, to the point where I wouldn't be surprised if Kinryu's Armored Thunderbolt was the first VF-11 to actually nab a kill in-series.

Besides, they really got the chance to go all out during the planetary assault mission where they were outgunned and outmatched. They still jobbed like mad, but at least it was for good reason and not screaming their eyeballs out.

The day Macross slips into "everyone jobs forever" territory is when you see the Uraga-class start to go down in droves. I think it's the only non-transformable warship in the franchise to not be animated in any scenes being destroyed; and to top things off it is definitely not a Macross-class, nor has ever been involved with any named characters.

I doubt the Elysion in its current configuration has any cannon ship attached there. It doesn't have hands to hold the gun (if it does have any, not with the Aethers attached, at any rate) and that's supposed to be the optimal firing configuration for the Macross Cannon. The Elysion doesn't even have the same transformed configuration as the Quarter/Battle types; its legs are located way too forward.

If there has to be a cannon in its current configuration at all, it'd more likely than not be built-in like with the original SDF; maybe they have focusing equipment stashed somewhere on the ship. Otherwise there'll be at least an ARMD-R and an ARMD-L toodling around in orbit over Chaos waiting for the Elysion to swap them in, in lieu of two (now free-flying) Aethers.

>>
>>14223380
>Perhaps the two Aethers can generate the beam between them, like the SDF1 did, instead of having a dedicated gunship.

I did consider adding that possibility into the post, but that would mean that the Elysion is effectively gimped while one of the Aethers is out and about.

Or that its two back-mounted prongs are also focusing arrays, but unlike later SDF-types where they most likely fixed the power connection issues with the original Macross, the Elysion's are pointing the wrong way.

>tfw it fires from the triangle-shaped attachment on its bridge head
>>
>>14223353
I think it might not even have a main cannon period. Chaos isn't a PMC like SMS. It's supposed to be the equivalent of google.
>>
Could the gunship be actually docked in the center bow gap between the Aethers when in ship mode?

Elysion seems like a ship designed before the Battle-class, given how it looks like a mix between a Macross and a Quarter/Battle, it could have been an intermediate ship with features from both. Having a separate gunship would make sense if its a class that was pretty much the basis for Battle-class and whatnot.

the halfway mode allows high mobility on the ground by hovering, as well as vertical takeoff and landing

it has a lower profile than the humanoid mode which means it's a smaller target, and the lower centre of gravity makes it easier to hover as well
>>
>>14228461
the first Macross show had the humans fighting huge giant humanoid aliens, so the robot form is pretty much the same size as the giant aliens, thus allowing for them to interact (with their gear and other things perhaps) Really though its just that the series creator is a really good designer of transporting mecha planes.

Your question is also kind of like "Why are there giant robots in Gundam?"
>>
>>14228483
And only now I realize you were asking about gerwalk mode. Fuck

well yeah, its an inbetween mode that's an agile hover mode, not as fast as full jet, not as capable of dexterious manipulation as the mecha form, but very mobile

looks like a single engine to me, but who knows?
if that's the case though, do the Knights only fly single engine?
>>
>>14230423
Most probably a mix.
The F-104 is piss ugly.
I can see why Kawamori would go for the sexy F-5 instead
>>
>>14230428
F-5 nose, cockpit, wings
F-104 fuselage, engine, tail
sound about right?
>>
at this point Macross is pretty much Warhammer 40K: Good end, right?

I guess you could say that Zentraedi = Orks (without the hooliganism) and Vajra = Tyranids, and maybe Basara = Slaanesh (with the guitar energy beams and stuff), but we don't have an equivalent to the Necrons yet.

Was that really how the Galaxy worked? I thought it was just that the robotics aspect was popular and then they just got out of hand
