Okay here's the thing. Aside from the first couple of episodes involving how the team comes together the characters and personalities of both continuities are almost identical. You can watch say the first half of the OVA and then go straight to say episode 14 of the TV series and not be confused in the slightest. I wouldn't open with the movies of course but there's really nothing to rack your brain over here.

I would say check out the OVA first just because it's shorter but otherwise just get your favorite drink, put your feet up and relax

Make sure you watch the Griffin Arc of New Files altogether, they were originally aired alternating with unrelated episodes. watch movie 2 after the entire series, movie 3 any time really.

To be fair, the 1st OVA + Movies and the TV series + 2nd OVA are separate timelines. (Not including the manga which is it's separate timeline as well.

If you haven't already decided, it depends on how much time you want to put in. If not much, stick with the 1st OVAs and movies. If you want to get the whole nine yards and have things fleshed out a lot more, the TV series and 2nd OVAs.


Also be prepared for some major genera whiplash with the 2nd and 3rd movie if you're thinking they're going to be like anything else in Patlabor. Okay, you can claim the 2nd movie is a retread of SV2's longest day, but it gets much more muddled because of Oshii's approach to film in my opinion.
