Around what episode of NGE was hope for a "happy" (or at least "normal") ending lost?

Happy? Never.

From episode 2 when you learn that the pilot feel the damage sustained by the clearly uncontrolled & physic defying BEAST he was linked to.
>>
>>14193310
But NGE did have a happy ending in episode 26
>>
>>14193310
The tone became really desperate and sinister around ep 20.
That episode when Asuka lost her mind really seals the deal, it just keep getting worse.
>>
>>14193310

Well, if you mean an ending without EoE, there never was any hope thanks to Rei's ascension being confirmed in Ep.1
>>
>>14193310
Around 14 years prior before 2nd Impact

>Beast

That wasn't really clear until the unveiling of the face.

Sure, the pain-link was pretty creepy, but the whole beast part wasn't obvious in episode 2
>>
>>14193353
It was obvious at the end of fucking episode 1 when we saw what happened after Shinji blacked out.
>>
>>14193310
Things were going okay until the Unit 3/Bardiel incident. But like the others said, it was never meant to end well.
>>
EoE probably gave the most uplifting, anti-suicide message with some of Yui'a final words near the end.

>Anywhere can be paradise as long as you have the will to live. After all, you are alive, so you will always have the chance to be happy.

People who say eva was all downhill after a point forget that the message at the end was to not give up and lose hope.
>>
>>14193310

The real turning point was the Leliel episode. Not only did Shinji immediately get a horrifying and extended punishment for being confident, setting his self esteem back to 0, but it was when Misato really because to question "Okay holy shit, what exactly is an Eva? Because this thing is a monster than I just realized I don't actually understand or know anything about."

After that we get a gauntlet of really traumatizing and punishing Angels, and Misato starts laying the dirty secrets of Nerv out.

I'm not sure when, in the timeline, you would be best able to try and avoid the path to the end of the world. But in the progression we got, Leliel was the point where the death spiral began.
>>
>>14193427
Perhaps, but it didn't mean that much in universe because the world was still completely fucked at the end.
>>
>>14193427

Except there's really no happiness all alone on a totally dead and blood covered world.
>>
>>14193427
>Anywhere can be paradise as long as you have the will to live
Does this include 'North Korean work camp'?
What about 'ISIS torture chamber'?
>>
>>14193835
>>14193833
>>14193558
It was talking to suicidal people, you're missing the point. If you give up and just off yourself, you'll take away the chance for future happiness.
>>
>>14193851

You also prevent the very real possibility of future pain and end all the pain you currently suffer under.
>>
>>14193863

Pain ends, anon. There are some situations where pain is all you realistically have to look forward to, but for the vast majority of people pain is just a temporary rough spot that you can come out the other side of.

If you are going into the last stages of stomach cancer or you are tied up in the basement of a serial killer, then yeah you might want to check out early. You don't have a lot of good left to look forward to. But thats not who the message of the movie is directed at.
>>
I actually very much interpreted the TV series ending as a HAPPY ending. And I liked it better that way. EoE was just spiteful
>>
>>14193874
>being this much of a normalfag
>>
>>14193883
He gets out of the tang, anon, he stops worrying and learns to love himself.
but why does he choke Asuka, seriously that's the biggest part I never understood
>>
>>14193900
To see if she's real.
>>
>>14193900

There are a lot of interpretations of that scene that are all pretty valid. Some say that it is Shinji checking to see if any of this is real, because if it was still a dream Asuka couldn't stop him.

The explanation I like the best is that it is the one moment in the whole show that we see both of them with their shields down, if only for a few moments.

Shinji has a LOT of frustration and anger at the world and those around him he normally keeps hidden away, but we see that unfiltered as he starts choking Asuka. In that same moment, we see Asuka show Shini the one thing she was always afraid to admit: affection. Caressing his face with tenderness.

And then the moment ends, and they fall back into their old familiar patterns. Shinji starts crying again, and Asuka insults him for his weakness. Thats where the movie ends. But the important fact is that, if however briefly, they were open and honest with each other, a really important emotional hurdle for them both that is a sign of them starting to grow past their problems. Its a work in progress, neither of them is just magically better people now, but they have taken a big first step.

Its something neither of them ever would have done earlier in the show, even for a moment.
>>
>>14193863
You're right, it does end the pain. No one can deny that.

It also ends everything else.
>>
>>14193895
You're forgetting that the movie, while made by a very depressed man, was also someone who never wanted to give up hope.
>>
>>14194014
What a pity the only rammification for such behavior could only be explained through platitude.

It refuse order

No really, you could tell something was up from episode 1, by episode 2 you knew it was going to be "Let's Bash Shinji Evangelion"
>>
Personally I say it all went of shit when they started researching and testing dummy plugs.
Shinji was getting better and smiling and shit before, but from that point on all hell went south
>>
>>14193353
you'd have to be stupid not to realize it wasn't a robot as soon as it started screaming and bleeding, and was clearly made of organic tissue under the armor

Well Anno did a shitty job, for having it end with Asuka calling Shinji Pathetic and a blood red wasteland.
>>
>>14194118
That sounds about right. I made the mistake of watching all 26 episodes in one sitting with a friend , so the whole thing just kind or blurs together for me. The happiest part was that 5 minutes of alternate universe high school comedy we got at the end. Still my favorite part of the whole show. It was like salve burn wounds.

>>
>>14193310
To be technical, it was all doomed from the start.

The point the show truly goes to grim land is the Leliel battle, the point of no return was Bardiel. After that point, the astounding amount of progress Shinji was making towards becoming a semi-normal person got shot straight to hell, and didn't return.

Listen, watching the end of EoE is like appreciating a pastoral painting.

You appreciate it for what it depicts in the moment, you don't ruin it by asking "Where are these people going to get lunch from?"
>>
> implyig the ending isn't happy
I mean sure, Shinji doesn't get the girl, grow a pair etc., but he becomes happy with himself, which is the happiest ending Shinji could ever have.
>>
>>14193353

Is it true that during that scene the eye always tracked the camera? Don't have any copies on me to check.
>>
Can we talk about Rebuild? I watched 3.33 recently and while I enjoyed it, it feels at the same time like an 'interim' movie that's meant to be a bridge between 2 and 4, and also like there was a series between 2 and 3 that we never saw. It felt like a lot of the dialogue (especially on the Wonder) was insanely clunky solely so they could introduce whole new things they never explained.

Also I don't like the new version/imagining of Rei so much but I can't quite figure out why.

>>14194338
No, if Bokurano had gotten him through his depression, he would be that. Eva obfuscates everything, but Bokurano straight-up has a character directly state, "You have no business offing yourself because simply by existing you owe someone to keep going."

Technically, never. Episode 25&26 are in themselves, part of a happy ending, and their nature eludes normal storytelling, so they don't remove the possibility of a happy ending nor reduce the chances for one.
