In Soldiers of Sorrow, it still had a beam rifle at first. Then when the perspective changes to the side view showing the GM getting stabbed, it has a beam spray gun.

since gm's were new at the time they were probably having a hard time trying to replicate the gundam's beam rifle economically for the early batches and just did a 1 to 1 copy but in later models they got spray guns.

Seems more like a lazy attempt at a pointless retcon than an animation error in the original. This was the first appearance of the GM, yeah? Beam spray guns proabably weren't even conceptualised yet. It was supposed to look to the viewer like a cheaper Gundam (and then Amuro explains to us that it is exactly that) so having a recognisable weapon was most likely intentional.

It can do it, it's just that making full on beam rifles is expensive so the GMs just got beam spray guns instead.

Same reason it only has one beam saber. It's not that it can't use two (some commander units did!), it's just budget.

They don't generate the same amount of power, but other units with slightly weaker powerplants have still been able to use beam rifles.

The basic GM design is very closely based off the Gundam, and apparently is capable of having sub-generators fitted to help boost the overall power output to be closer to the Gundam's.

I don't care what Tomino says, I still like the G-Fighter better than the Core Booster.

Ral's Gouf uses a beam sword in 0079. It isn't an animation error or anything like that; you clearly see it power up like the RX-78-2's beam saber when he takes it out.

The spray gun name probably comes from the idea that it's like a cut down beam rifle, making it cheaper and easier to mass produce. It's small like a pistol and barely has a barrel, which in most beam weapons would contain "convergence rings" that focus the mega particles. Even then, not all GMs were given beam spray guns so that goes to show just how new of a technology it was and how hard it was to mass produce. It has all of the power to punch through armor like most other beam guns/rifles but lacks long range and maybe accuracy as well.

In some games I think it fires a wider, almost shotgun like effect, but I'm pretty sure it's just the devs taking artistic license (and also so not every beam gun is more or less the same).

And lastly, I don't know of any source showing the beam spray gun to have a spread or rapid fire pulse kind of shot. In the original series, it just fires a beam that looks like most other beam rifle shots.

There's this page from the Master Archive databook for the GM, but hell if I know what it says.

I skimmed the entry for the BR-M-79C-1 Beam Spray Gun. Basically:
>If the original beam rifle is a long range assault rifle, the beam spray gun is a mid range machine pistol
>The beam spray gun doesn't have sensors of its own, and relies entirely on the datalink from the GM (so GMs don't come with the extra scope attachment the Gundam did?)

Honestly, the beam spray gun is just a better weapon than the beam rifle for everything GMs are supposed to do. Anything that's supposed to lay down really long range fire like the GM Snipers can easily pick up their own custom rifles.
