So I finished Shout Factory's DVD set of Dairanger, and thought it was a pretty good series. Great to see actual fighting styles. Just gotta ask, what was up with that ending/epilogue? The whole 50 years into the future felt so out of place with the rest of the series.

Not that guy, but should I buy Kakuranger when it comes out? I'd like to support some official releases and doing so for the most recent ones seems like the best to do, but I'm not sure whether to do the above or go for Zyu/Dai.

I don't want to say I'm glad Go-Busters failed because I'm not, but I'm glad it meant Go-Busters didn't have much to any have any influence on subsequent series.

I'd have been happy for some stuff to be carried over (mostly how it handled certain mecha things), but for the most part I appreciated a lot of Go-Busters for being different and that'd sorta be lost if everything afterwards had started cloning it.

Though I could have done with Kyouryu not feeling the need to go as far in the opposite direction as it did. Could have done without the samba and some of the more ridiculous bullets.

That was the main thing that made me fall in love with Zyuohger and it's the first show since Gokaiger where I liked every single character on the show. Utsunomiya has a very good eye and knack as a producer of picking casts that has good chemistry with each other and the interactions with one another feels organic.

Now Gokaiger's been brought up, I feel like that could work pretty well, specifically a pre-canon story expanding the Marvelous/Basco storyline, as well as Sid/Joe/the Zangyack in general. I think Dekaranger would be perfect with a whole new cast barring atleast one ranger (anyone but Ban). The potential action would crazy:

Maybe it's been a little while since I've seen it, but I don't see how Go-busters was this refreshing departure from the formula other than the first few episodes. Yeah, robot fights were better and Enter was a bit smarter and more pro-active than your average villain, but that's about it. Now, if the show had stuck to the style of the first few episodes, then that'd be a different story (and I'd probably like it quite a bit more than I actually did).

Second guy. The main thing I really didn't want to become a trend was in setting transformations being the norm over exaggerated stock footage combined with Go-Busters muted role call and a lack of special effects for their role call. They weren't entirely without a role call but it was as simple as you can make it.

The giant battles were against separate things created to be giant monsters in that other dimension based on the MotW rather than just having the MotW grow Ultraman style. And when you'd have Enter in giant battles it'd also be him piloting a mecha rather than having him turn into a monster and grow.


The suit designs having a bigger focus on looking like real materials and such, though that was because of the special ops theme granted. To be fair actually a lot of the things that stood out to me that way you can put down to the shows gimmick, like the fights having stuff like Blue Buster locking enemies into armbars.

You also had a support team backing them up all the time, as well as an entire organisation maintaining their mecha and supplying their tech. Mecha stuff was very different in that they'd often use base forms or single mecha fights throughout the series instead of just instant combinations or sticking to only the newest power up.

I'm not saying the series was super realistic srs business or anything. But I do think there definitely was an effort to buck certain trends and approach things differently.

I do wonder if stuff like the mecha boxing ep would have happened if the toys weren't underperforming. But I still enjoyed that stuff, even from the start you still had silly things like Hiromu freezing at the sight of chickens so that stuff would possibly have always been part of Go-Busters either way.

Eh, I do like those bits, but they're not really much in terms of "bucking trends" to me. The giants being robots were used in Dekaranger and Bioman, and Megaranger and Shinkenger had some form of either support or maintenance backing them up in some shape or form. I'll at least kinda give you the base form/single-mecha fights, and I guess the suit designs are different from the usual.

I really don't view this as a Japanese thing. Honestly when I first got into anime and manga I actually found it really refreshing how not caught up in never changing it was compared to American franchises. As I got further into I realised it had similar such issues that just manifest in a different way, but honestly I feel like it's just as a big an issue in western fiction.

The moment that Kento Shimoyama was announced as head writer and Naomi Takebe as head producer I knew the show was going to be subpar. Takebe for one doesn't have the experience producing for sentai and she should stick to her bread and butter which is KR and Shimoyama works best as a secondary writer and Vs films (except for his work in Gobusters vs Gokaiger).

Kento Shimoyama had never been the main writer of a Sentai show before though, so it's not like he had a bad track record. Most of his movies were good, and I had enjoyed some of his anime writing - he took over as the main writer for the last Bleach filler arc and also wrote quite a few Keroro filler episodes (and his episodes seemed to use more continuity and expanded cast characters than episodes under other writers).

It just seemed like he didn't even try with Ninninger. Although maybe he's just bad at creating characters/premise?
