Is Gunbustah the most "Japanese" /m/-show in terms of its setting?

No, not that it's just taking place in Japan, but I don't know any other show that had as many environments that are quintessentially Japanese, from the schools to the villages to the fields.

Do you honestly expect that a show made and situated in japan to look american?

If it's not set in the country of Japan, yes.

Also Patlabor to answer OP.
>>
https://animekritik.wordpress.com/2011/11/25/imperialism-translation-gunbuster-episode-one/

Gunbuster is Japanese nationalist propaganda.
>>
>>14167626
And what recent anime not set in japan used japanese cities?
>>
>>14167630
He's talking out of his ass. He's pretty much what >>14167622
said.
>WAHHH!!! WAHHH!!! I HATE WHEN MY JAPANESE CARTOONS HAVE JAPANESE SETTINGS OR SETTINGS RESEMBLING JAPAN IN THEM UGHHH MAKE IT STOP!
>>
>>14167630
Who mentioned the anime being recent? I did misread the post though. Yes, if the setting is in Japan then it will look Japanese. However, >>14167462 is saying that wishes more shows branched out to create their own world (at least I think) rather than make it "Japan BUT WITH [genre]", which is how I responded. He's not saying he wants Tokyo to be NYC or the rice patties to be amber waves of grain.

>>14167646
Nah. I just like creators to make a unique world rather than building upon our own so often. Not that it's inherently a bad thing, I just get bored of it.
>>
>>14167664
Except when they do create new and fantasy worlds they try to create new palces, or are you seriously going to say that Gunbuster is a fantasy world not set in ours? So again I ask, what anime not set in japan has used japanese cities? It should be a bunch of anime sinceyou're bitching about their prevalence
>>
>>14167629
>an application form saying the school is a Japanese military school proves the series is imperialistic when we already fucking knew it's a military school
What the fuck am I reading? This is somehow more significant than the fact that Japan somehow took over Hawaii in some unnamed alternate future war?
>>
>>14167679
Are you retarded? Let me spell it out for you again.

>OP: Does Gunbuster have the most quintessentially "Japanese" environments of all /m/ shows?
>Anon: No, plenty of others do. Unfortunately so, because it means the setting is uninteresting in my opinion and I wish fewer shows were set in Japan.
>bickering
>You, being retarded: So what, you want a show set in JAPAN to look AMERICAN?
>Me, misreading: An anime that is by nature made in Japan can have any look that it wants. If the setting is not Japan then it shouldn't look Japanese.
>you repeat the last question
>I explain everything I just posted above
>You: But they DO create other worlds sometimes. Are you saying Gunbuster is a fantasy world? Why should a show set in Japan look American????

Fuck off.

>>14167680
Just alternate history WWII iirc, but don't take my word for it.
>>
>>14167680
No, they bought Hawaii, then America regrets selling Hawaii and tries to take it back by force and Japan fights them off.
>>
>>14167437
Gasaraki actually has Noh dancing as a big part of its plot.

A show homaging Space Battleship Yamato and downright ripping it off in the first scene is for Imperialist Japan?
Color me impressed!
>>
>>14167680
Read the rest of it, it's filled with references to imperial japan
>>
>The classic authors were leftists
>Their successors were far right
>Nowadays anime & manga is too right even for the Japanese right wing

What happened?
>>
>>14167725
(The way America acquired Hawaii is pretty shady, ofcourse that goes for the entire US).

WTF it doesn't make sense that America would EVER sell Hawaii, it is an extremely valuable military outpost. Which is why it was taken over in the first place.

It is as likely as Japan selling off Okinawa.
>>
>>14167462
Anime being set in Japan is quite normal anon, Hollywood movies are usually set in North America with American actors. Same goes for movies and tv shows made by other countries.

Wnen the BBC makes a new crime show it takes place in the UK.

Came here to post this. It's legit one of the most autistic things I've read.
>>
>>14168283
Hmm yeah it is just one step too far to suspend my disbelief.

I can see the US auction Puerto Rico or Alaska when the oil runs out in an extreme disaster where they need money fast but not Hawaii.

But even then, no country has in recent history given up parts of its territory without a war.
>>
Isn't Gunbuster centuries into the future?
Who knows what economic circumstances might change by then. You can just fill in the gaps yourself, it's really not important.

>I can see the US auction Puerto Rico or Alaska when the oil runs out in an extreme disaster where they need money fast but not Hawaii
Alaska is too important when it comes to missile defense.

>>14168341
It's not centuries in the future and the Japan's economic situation at the time influenced the story, with the country going through an economic boom they thought they would be able to do stuff like outright buy Hawaii.

"Briefly, the Gunbuster timeline indicates that in the year 1996 Japan buys Hawaii from the U.S.A. In 2008 America regrets the decision and attacks Pearl Harbor, sparking the Second Japanese-American War. The invaders are eventually crushed and the war ends in 2012, with Hawaii remaining in Japanese hands. I will let the reader digest this “history” at his or her leisure."
>>
>>14167437
OP, you're fucking dumb. There are mecha shows with ancient Japanese aesthetics or even deal with Japanese lore, and you want to say Gunbuster is the most "Japanese" /m/ show? Because its setting is Japan and reflects that? Like pretty much every other mecha show? I'm exasperated at your stupidity.

>typical Gunbuster fan
>typical Gainax fan
Why are they always so dumb?
