Gunpla / Plamo General

***READ THE GUIDE***

https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1Tr8UyF2Xg5Ojqw0sxcO7oIG7IIsJPes3lMO5pHZKu5o

***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Alright, gonna pull the trigger on:
Hazel Advanced
Nemo (Zeta colors)
GM Sniper II
GM Striker

Still don't know what I should use as a villain suit.
Would a Bawoo be too OP? I think we established that a Döven Wolf is too stronk, and I know the Bawoo is up there.

Got an idea for a diorama, but I'd like it to make some sense.

Decided to bite the bullet and get a couple Commander Jahannams (one to straight build, and one for a custom project, probably using a crossbone backpack) since they were only four bucks each on HLJ's clearance. Is it an alright kit? The design looks cool but I never built any G Reco kits yet.

WHY
>>
>>14138901

That looks so neat and orderly.

Usually takes me a few attempts to get it that nice, because half of the parts want to lean in different directions.

as a owner of three for kit bash, kit bash and normal reasons I can say its gonna be alot of work. the caridigan gm or however its spelled leg thrusters are two big. The legs are longer on purpose not just to be katokied. The heads shape is elongated compared to the gm type c and also a different shape.

Not trying to knock you building skills at all Im just giving a heads up as finding shots from all angles and stuff alone is going to be hard.

>>14139688
As much as I'd like to say, "Just block me if you don't like it" I wont that's a toxic mentality and I like the general. Call me a sentimental fucktard for all I care. This goes for other "drop the trip" posts too. There are valid reasons to use a trip in a general and so long as it's self contained so I see no harm. Anyways, not like it really even matters. this isn't about gunpla/plamo.

So which has less issues between the MG Qan[T] and MG 00 Raiser? From what I'm seeing both seem to have issues with pieces sometimes falling off, and the Qan[T] has that heavy lean with the shield on. Kind of like both suits but trying to get the one that has the less issues
>>
>>14139843
The Qan[T] and 00 are both very good kits. They have basically the same frame from what I recall but the plate armor has differences. The 00 looks a bit more detailed and the Qan[T] has balance issues the 00 doesn't. If you really like the Quan[T] get it. It's not bad by any means and reinforcing the joints helps a ton.
>>
>Gamestop starting to sell IBO kits

Uhhhh, is there going to be a major American release of the IBO dub or something?

There's not any really reason to sell such a niche item at GameStop.
>>
>>14139951
They're probably betting it will be like Wing and get a lot of people into the franchise.

>inb4 flops and we never get anything again
Of all the things to gamble on, why IBO? Why not 00 or Unicorn or GBF?
>>
So I just built my first gunpla the other night. It was the Kamiki Burning Gundam.

I'm considering buying another kit soon. But I dunno what. I only have one requirement right now:

It's gotta have a sword

So can you guys recommend and cool-ass robots with swords that would be good for someone still new like me? I need to still buy a couple of tools, but I should be able to make due with what I have.

Views on average were about G-Reco level (~2%), even a little higher around Episode 20 iirc, and no doubt boosted for the finale but we never saw the final ratings. However for an episode or two ratings were REALLY low, dunno if there was an external reason for that but it was around the series' lowest points in terms of quality so probably not. On top of that, it was in a primetime slot (for comparison, Yu-Gi-Oh followed it and averaged about 4%) and appeared to be getting fairly hyped up but was still only pulling late-night ratings. A dub and streaming services were announced too, but we don't know how much that factors into sales expectations. It's hard to truly tell how much Bandai was pushing it because we don't see how many times they air commercials and previews and shit compared to other series, but for these reasons we can assume it performed below what was desired. However, gunpla sales seemed fine and character merch seems successful enough so it could hardly be called a flop.

I recently picked up an finished an MG Sinanju Stein. Hands can't hold the bloody weapons for shit. However I do have one issue with the intact hand. The fucking ball part that connects the hand to the forearm/wrist came off in the socket however the hand snaps back onto it, should I ask for a replacement for that hand seeing as I have to replace the other one, or should I try welding it together?
>>
>>14140810

I would buy the shit out of an SD Graze Ritter.

>>14140843

It's a good thing that the Ritter is the reason I got into IBO in the first place. I saw a preview of the gunpla box for the Ritter and instantly fell in love. I'm always a slut for the whole Centurian look!
>>
Painters, in regards to paint setup/primer setup how do you go about it? I've got a cardboard box filled with smaller sectioned off cardboard pieces, alligator clips holding parts slotted into the holes.

From there what's the right way to do things? I'd be spraying primer with a rattlecan then painting with an airbrush. To my knowledge the guide doesn't mention this.

Spraying in an open garage.
>>
>>14138901
Wait, you're not supposed to do that?

it sort of sometimes makes the edges touching the cardboard really gross and weird looking, the paint might come off a bit, overall it ends up looking poor

So, I've been thinking about developing a tabletop game for 1/144 scale Gunpla. From what I've thought up for concept:
>every model would need an action base
>must be 1/144 scale (all 1/144 grades allowed so long as you can put them on an action base)
>probably space battles only for now, since Terrain would be tricky
>probably something along the lines of Battletech, for customization rules
>Rules for weapons and such would be by AU, as well as judged by WYSIWYG, so you can kit bash
>You can mix and match AU's so you can go build fighters, do Zakus vs Wing Gundams, or just reenact stuff from the anime/manga

Then there's the whole issue of balancing everything, which would be hell and a half, but doable.

So what do you guys think? Would anyone be interesting in playing/play testing? Or is there something like this already out there?
>>
>>14142118
Sounds interesting, but difficult to even make.

>>14142118
I think I saw some rules made for MSiA scale. No clue if they were anything good.

There's no way you could balance it, but it could be good for fun.

There were legit tabletop games made that used little chits over in Japan, apparently one of the early games got reissued a few years back
http://en.gundam.info/topics/white/4965
>>
>>14142127

I've got plenty of 1/144's, I think the main issue would be the actual weapons/base stats, but I could always piggy back off of an existing system like Battletech or 40K, or something.

>>14142146

This looks neat, albeit very simple. Could also piggy back off of this?

>inb4 I go GW 2 - electric boogaloo with rules cheese
>>
>>14142183
Well, I think that the first thing you should think of is how many numbers you want, how deep the game would be, what systems would be in, and what kind of game you really want it to be. I don't know much about traditional games, but do you want a dice game or tactics, RPG like, or such?

>>
>>14142195

For what I envision, it will be like a simulator of the show/manga. "Reenact your favorite scenes from the show, or make your own!"

I've played 40K and Battletech extensively, and am familiar enough with a bunch of tabletop systems. It's just a matter of making things easy to streamline, since I doubt everyone who builds Gunpla, and who would be interested in said game, would want to read 3 textbooks of rules.

Battletech has a nice manner of stating out mecha, but a pretty complicated system overall. 40k is pretty cinematic and streamlined, but more for a bigger scale, so individual units aren't as grand usually. Just gotta find that equilibrium.
>>
>>14142215
Well, you could make two versions, a pretty barebones one at first and update it when ready with a new "expansion".
Just make UC first, give them some base stats and an easy system. Hell you could use cards too.
>>
>>14142226

That's a good idea. Make some stats for the RX-79-2, maybe the Guncannon and Guntank and some Zakus, then move onto more specialized AU mobile suits and models. Might need to get some more HGUC kits then. Or maybe I'll do IBO, since I got plenty of them to work with. Good call!

I know I'm not the best modeler but once I can afford primer and a new batch of paints to replace my testors I hope to finish touching up all my models Their are pretty much just stap fits atm though once I watch some tutorials on paneling I hope that my models will look a lot better.

just curious, do you mean the gundam markers that has the paint come out when you press on the tip?
if its not, just ignore the long post ahead:

i believe its the gundam marker eraser that makes ABS brittle, not the paint itself because the eraser contains paint thinner.
used to use gundam markers all the time(shut up, i was lazy, learned my ways), especially on inner frames. had a baaaaaaaaaad run in when using eraser on the knee joint on sinanju ver ka, you can guess what happened.
since then, i've learned my ways and fixed his knee with putty and gave him a paint job, but gundam marker should only be used for touching up small details
tldr: only use gundam marker for small details, the eraser can fuck up ABS

Yes I'm talking about regular thick marker. It has something about ABS written there.

I've heard about the eraser, but there's also similar issue with GM301 for panel lining. The ink is very thin to simulate washing technique so I suspect it has the same solvent with that eraser.

So anons I'm about to build my first gunpla. I'm wondering if you could give me some advise. When I read these threats I see how much dedication and love you guys pour into your gunpla and I really admire that, but as a newbie I'm not even sure how far I should go on my first build.

Personally I'd just like to build my gunpla without painting it/coating it yet. I figured that I had better just practice the building basics first on 1 or 2 kits before I try my hand at painting, but is this smart or should I just man the fuck up and do that on my first kit?
>>
>>14145763
If you don't feel up to painting yet, build a kit or two and paint when you're comfortable. It's not like the kits are unpaintable after you build them, you can go back to that later.

At the very least, make sure to sand the nubs, and maybe try your hand at seam wielding.

Oh and, panel lining and top coat. Those are the super easy basics.

Yeah, good luck. No need to rush painting, or you'll just make even more mistakes. Take your time to look up guides about it so you'll know exactly what to do. You'll most likely still mess up, but it'd still look acceptable, and not a horrible sloppy mess like mine that I had to burn in a fire to hide my shame.

In jabman025's video review of MG Dark Matter Exia, he mentioned painting the (originally) gray GN Sword blue, and intentionally made it frosty to give it an ice theme, to contrast it against the clear orange of the other sword.

I think that's pretty neat, and I'm interested in doing the same for those swords on my HG.
Problem is, I want the base suit to look ambiguous, not too obviously "good" or "evil" (I think Dark Matter Exia falls under the latter).

Any ideas / suggestions on what the base suit should be?
I suppose Transient looks pretty neutral.

You need to clean dem nubs, panel line it, and you'd be surprised how much a top coat does. I usually don't paint parts if I'm not going to change the color, unless I need to hide nub marks. And a top coat really makes the kit look like it's been detailed.

> I really don't understand why so many people are buying IBO kits.

Because IBO has good designs.
>>
>>14146987
The currently airing Gundam series usually pushes out a lot of kits, even to people who don't like or haven't seen the series. IBO having a bunch of cool designs helps greatly there. Barbatos looks like a giant gladiator robot. Graze Ein is a towering cyclopic behemoth. Both are pretty damn cool.
>>
>>14145538
Next likely IBO 1/100 should be Graze Ritter since it uses the same frame. P-Bandai or not. Graze Ein has a lower chance but still possible as the torso is reused.

The Mark II is probably the most sturdy hunk of plastic in the line. I've only built the Mark II and the Exia, and my sister the 2 Freedoms and the Destiny, and besides a few of the wing bits falling off the Vanilla Freedom, they are mostly just the legs falling off ocassionally, and the smaller pegs that don't stay attached well (like onthe GN Sword and the GN Shield on the Exia).

The two big ones I've seen people complain about are the Zeta and the Zephaggot or whatever.

In other news, I finished painting Carta's Ritter. Now to sand down and clean up some of the red. Anything else anyone sees that I should touch up before top coating it? Also, should I dull or gloss coat the sword? I figured a dull coat might fuck up the metallic of the sword.

It's okay. I feel like the complaining about it is really blowing the entire show out of proportion. It feels more grounded than other gundam series, especially the most recent G-reco, since the main gundams and grunts aren't all these overpowered ridiculous things. Fighting is brutal. A death flag is really obvious from the start, and the writing is alright. I'd say it's above age, seed, and 00 season II, somewhere around there.

Personally, it was the fact that Tekkadan was just a bunch of kids trying to do work, and literally picking up scrap along their journey and slapping it on Barbatos that did it for me. I just love stories like that, reminds me of the good old MechWarrior 4 games.

In other news, just finished painting the Ritters, while watching 00 with the gf. Now I'm strapped for what to build next. Should I work on the 2 vanilla Barbies I'm gonna make 2 space and 3, or should I work on the two 6th forms I'm gonna make into the twins, 5th ground and 5th space? Decide for me!

It's a more grounded story than... hell, any other gundam. Most of the complains you'll hear are about how it is NOT like other gundams, in fact.

I thought it was pretty good. Decent characters, a decent story that keeps moving, and combat is just plain brutal - a true exemplification of how mecha are meant to add personality to the impersonal affair that is warfare - with the designs to match.

Reminded me a lot of pic related.

the mecha are like furniture for half of the show, they are just panned over in hangars for most of it

just watch youtube clips of the fight you will literally miss nothing

the story is like if a generic gay harem anime did a school play of gundam wing

Oh, the actual 'mission' of the group hardly progresses, but who fucking cares? The main plot of the series is the cliche 'war is bad' and hardly concerns most of the characters - they're just on the job, looking after their personal objectives. In that context, fleshing out the setting and having robot battles in shifting circumstances was the right move.

The Barbatos having 6 different forms across the season is just a great show of that, as their encounters leave their mark on their journey.

i thought it was mediocre. for such a simple escort mission they had so much complications that just slowed the story down to a snails pace.
characters were okay, space guts was pretty cool, but gjallerhorn were a more interesting faction to follow imo.
felt like alot of wasted potential, final battle could have had more casualties. couldnt care less about the whole mars/dort colony problems
overall, it was fine. we got some great mech designs out of it though

>The main plot of the series is the cliche 'war is bad'
That's more of an overarching theme than a plot. A plot is literally events that make up a story, and "war being bad" isn't events. For most of the story, the literal "plot" of IBO is a bunch of mercs in space traveling to Earth.

I also finding it a bit silly that, while it's got the traditional anti-war themes of Gundam, by the end of the show Mika is driven as much by bloodlust as he is by protecting Tekkadan. But that's honestly a rather unique way to show that "war is bad" for a Gundam series.
