So what's the deal with this guy? I thought he was famous for his scifi works, but when I google him in Japanese I get mostly historical manga.

He's famous for both.

He doesn't seem very popular even in Japanese now. Usually authors get more popular when they're dead, this guy seems to be fading away.
>>
>>14133405
>>14133419
It helps that he presents his historical manga in a "matter of fact" way.

I bet it's his family's fault. Bunch of ungrateful greedy moochers.
>>
>>14133432
>He doesn't seem very popular even in Japanese now
You're wrong. He's as popular as Tezuka and as culturally significant. They're both immortalized as legends of manga and they are household names like Stan Lee is in the USA.
>>
>>14133462
When was the last time something of his got animated?
>>
>>14133405
I think in Japan, his Romance of the Three Kingdoms manga is more famous than any of his work. Even Tetsujin.
>>
>>14133432
Part of that might have something to do with his estate.

Yokoyama basically turned his hand to a lot of genres same as Tezuka and Ishinomori, and like both of them he had a large hand in codifying them. He's the grandfather of mecha as we know it thanks to Tetsujin 28, Giant Robo made big waves in tokusatsu, he was one of the authors who popularized ninja manga and magical girls, he was at the forefront of ESP and sci-fi manga for a decade with stuff like Babel II. He wasn't a great artist as such like some of his contemporaries but his true strength lay in his writing ability, which more than made up for it. He was renowned for his hard boiled, extremely matter of fact style which lent even the most outlandish of premises an air of realism. Hirohiko Araki holds him up as the King of Suspense manga.

His best work was probably his historical epics, adaptations of Japanese history or classical Chinese literature, hence why you got that when you googled him. His version of Romance of the Twelve Kingdoms is often held up as one of the best adaptations of the source material.

I agree with you.

Yokoyama may not draw very complicated characters, but he was an artistic master. His sense of scene composition is up there with the best, and his ability to make so many unique character designs (despite using a very simplistic style) is mind boggling. The character designs in Sangokushi are brilliant in their ability to differentiate such an immensely huge cast.

Found out on twitter the other day they are shitheads but not SUPER shitheads

The reason that's cited the most for them being awful, Giant Robo being dropped from SRWa3 is not because they ramped up the price for everything. It's because they included all the series referenced in GR as separate licenses that needed to be bought so GR was hugely expensive

That said, there should be some new Yokoyama. I think Sangokushi should be adapted but with stuff from other sources and not just the manga, kind of like ROTK 2010. But it would have all the dank memes and husbando designs so nobody would be upset with the changes

So I finished Mars just now. I'm a little disappointed at the lack of characters in it and the pacing seemed way too quick. They had the newspaper reporter and the father and the daughter. The latter who just kind of stopped showing up for some reason. There's very little emotion in the manga because of that. The ending was also super abrupt and the final God design felt really lazy.

Gee, when everyone else is either super powered or someone of power, what could normal people add? What could a female character who changed the protag's opinion on humans possible add to the story?!

>The ending was also super abrupt

Yes it is. It happens within a few pages and the protag changes his mind over the military trying to protect him from an angry mob.

I'm just bewildered at your dumb statements, it's worth ridicule. Also, point out exactly where I'm angry; you're just throwing around buzzwords. I don't really care if you loved it, liked it or hated it.

>No, he decided to protect them until suddenly at the end. Try rereading it.
Again with the dumb statements. The manga specifically portrayed the damning deceit and distrust of humans pretty much throughout the second half of the story. The people Mars was trying to save were doing everything to backstab him or gain power because they were driven by base instincts of fear and greed. They trapped Mars, which he took peacefully. The sixth god played on the people's hysteria and turned them against Mars, but again he tried to calm them. The entire last volumes builds up two things: humans behaving the way the aliens warned of, and the fear of Mars regaining his original programming. In an ironic twist, the humans beating Mars cause a shock so great that he slips back into his original state and decides to kill them all. The fact that these very obvious themes and direction of the story went right over your head just shows that you're in no position to comment.

>BALL
Yes? It's a great utilitarian design. It's not my fault you're a pleb.

>The fact that these very obvious themes and direction of the story went right over your head just shows that you're in no position to comment.

>save were doing everything to backstab him or gain power

They took precautions. He was locked up because if he was killed the earth would be doomed. The general cooperated with him and let him out getting himself killed in the process. Most of the humans we see aren't bad people.

It's been pretty neat. Babel II is pretty unsympathetic and a bit of a Gary Sue, but Yomi is a pretty interesting guy. Babel gets creepier by the chapter whether it's intentional or not and the fights are exciting as fuck. Although like Giant Robo and Mars it's lacking in developed side characters.

What?
>>
>>14154639
There was an anime loosely based off of Yokoyama's original Giant Robo released in 2007 called GR Giant Robo.

It has nothing to do with the 90's OVA, Giant Robo.

I meant more about the Imaishi OVA series he mentioned

>Meant the old Babel II anime, actually. Sorry, I wasn't clear.
I want translation of The Day Earth Burned and Siege of Babel, dammit.
>>
>>14150324
Not yet so far, although I wouldn't put it past Luurah to tackle that particular version, since it was in his era.

Another cool blog with lots of scans
http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/kaze2010_case_case/folder/432209.html

By the way, does his Daimos manga have any relation with the anime?
>>
>>14155485

Did you see Yokoyama's name anywhere in the anime? That should answer your question.
>>
>>14155485
>>14156258
Yokoyama's Daimos has nothing to do with Tosho Daimos and even predates it. I don't know why they used the same name.

>Yokoyama's Daimos has nothing to do with Tosho Daimos and even predates it. I don't know why they used the same name.
"Deimos" (which is pronounced "daimos") is the name of a Greek god and of a moon orbiting Mars.

Presumably, both Yokoyama's Daimos and Tosho Daimos took their name from that.

Is Yokoyama's Daimos related to his Mars stories?
>>
>>14154969
Everything I've heard about them says they're bad though.

>>14155030
I hope so, I need more of the insanity. And hot gender-bending Rodem
>>
>>14156872
Is that the 70's anime?
>>

>Everything I've heard about them says they're bad though.
the Italian edition of Earth Burned is incomplete but it's awesome.

And from what I've seen of the Siege of Babel scans, it's even better... though it has a goddamn cliffhanger finale!
>>
>>14158164
What's wrong with cliffhangers?
>>
>>14158188
Well, unlike open endings, which are a perfectly legitimate plot device that encourage you to ponder upon their meaning, "cliffhangers" are meant to be resolved as their only purpose is to tease you and compel you to read the next chapter.

Yes. That one was made to ride on Mazinger's popularity (although Yokoyama probably didn't mind/care).

I wonder what he thought of Nagai.

it's imagawa anon, you're going to confuse people, you senile madman

With this guy as one of the writers, there's little wonder why.

Also, this is the very first show Shingo Araki did character designs for, interestingly enough.
>>
>>14161279
So that's why he did the character designs for that awful nineties OVA.

New chapters of Babel II soon?

Also, I tried to read his historical manga and just can't get into them. Which makes me sad.

Not as awful as Beyond Infinity.

At least now you know that you're an unthinking pleb. Just move on to things that are more your speed, such as Code Geass or Evangelion.

So rude and so wrong
>>
>>14162762
Yeah, I'd rather read an actual book :^)
>>
>>14162757
Probably, but don't ask the staff about that, they're already annoyed as it is by the idiots that don't bother to read the FAQ or the Chatango.

>>14162845
Isn't that what I just did?

At least you did get a polite response.
