That's really it for me. The premise is enough to make me think Kawamori thought up the series while playing Ace Combat while doing something harder than weed, but I had a shit-eating grin on my face by the end of the episode. You're right, I got the order of events mixed up. He made that face before she started singing. However, he made it just after dodging all the missiles shot at him and it was obviously just a combination of relief from having done so and apprehension at his new situation i.e. being up in the air and only partially transformed while holding someone in the hand of his now partially transformed, partially busted unit in the clear sight of everyone on the ground.

The same site not only says nothing about Basara's Fire Valkyrie being a custom VF-19e it doesn't mention the VF-19e at all as far as I can tell. There's certainly no listing for it in the M7 section or the Master List. In fact, the only listing I can find for in a quick Google is that Aisha from the Macross 30 uses one. There's no English info available on it that I can tell and the only info I can see at all is something on the Japanese Wiki article for the VF-19.

I don't really see why this show is so impressive. It was surprising that there were actually good things to it, but it's not any better than Symphogear or the other Macrosses so far.

Walkure is basically a group of Basaras. Are they all special? Yes, but that's because they can. I mean, are they really that much weirder than the Nomes?

I'll give you the most honest breakdown I can.

The thing you should know up front is that Delta is breaking convention by jumping right into the deep end. Usually, Macross shows start much more ground and then build up into the insanity such that by the time you get there everything makes perfect sense and indeed you can't imagine it turning out any other way, despite it sounding totally absurd out of context.

Start with SDF Macross. Its old and the animation often isn't very good, but the story is rock solid with the exception of one or two episodes. It feels very old school scifi, like Heinlein, and does some interesting stuff. Most importantly it sets the stage for the foundation of Macross. The events of Space War One, and what certain characters did in it, fundamentally changes history such that certain characters in later shows makes absolutely no sense unless you know what happened during Space War One.

Macross Plus is a bit more serious and less music focused, but generally considered good. Its short, only movie length, so you lose nothing by giving it a shot.

Macross 7 is an odd beast in that it gets more magical and silly than most Macross shows do. But it sets this up by taking the slow and scenic route. The first 15 episodes or so (out of 50) are pretty repetitive, and you don't realize just how important the details they are sprinkling throughout these early arcs really are until later. But once they decide to pull out the stops the show hypes up fast. If you likes The first episode of Delta, the latter episodes of 7 should be right up your alley.

Zero is a prequel that some people don't like for trying something new. I thought it was fine. It also feeds some plot details into Frontier.

Frontier was the first of what I consider the new era of Macross, its the most similar to Delta in style and tone. Watch the series, and then the movies. There are a couple of moments that fall flat, but when you hit the high notes it gets superb
