Hardly, this is how /m/ has always reacted to Unicorn. I'll admit I liked the first half well enough despite its flaws, but past that (especially Laplace's Box) gets pretty retarded. I'm not one of the people who complains about "muh ushering in an era of peace hurts Late UC" because Gundam never pretends that mankind can live up to those ideals but it was all pretty dumb. The characters being either unlikable or totally flat doesn't help either. The soundtrack was decent, in fact it's a little better than that but I take points away for sounding a bit generic. Some tracks were really hype though, which was enjoyable.

Anyway visuals are up there in the top ranks of Gundam for sure but that doesn't make it a great piece of work. Sound is above average. Story is not so great, characters are worth even less. It's not that high on the list for my favorite Gundam things.

The story is ultimately not dependent on anything that came before it. I'm not even trying to star a canon/non-canon thing either. Over the course of the story, you learn what requisite exposition elements from what came before it, but none of the character arcs and the overall narrative absolutely require that you know what happened.
The one outlier would be the portrait of Amuro which is just kinda there.
The Marida mind-fuckery coupled with Zimmerman's flashbacks are all the characterization needed there for her to have a full arc.

I'm not trying to suggest that knowledge of UC before hand won't improve (or diminish--as seems often is the case) your Unicorn experience, but it holds up as a self-contained work.
