Traveling to kill Lady Une showed how far Relena had gone since episode 1. Compare who she is in episode 11 to how she is in the Sanc Kingdom arc. Relena always acted on emotion like when she told OZ that the Gundams were going to come and kill them in episode 12 to where she is in her peace talks in the early 30s. Heero was even going to kill Relena when she gave that speech she gave after he got Zero because he thought she was going to be parrot.

Dude, she was a malcontent from the start. First appearance, she was bitching that her dad worked too much and had no time for her. Then she goes out for a walk because she's pissed about him, and runs into Heero, who intrigues her (and more when he suddenly shows up enrolled at her school). Next thing she's following this dangerous guy that threatened to kill her around, suddenly her dad gets killed by some sort of super make-up compact, and then she's chasing after the bitch that did it, only to shoot the flower off her chest. There was the shit with the plane to interrupt the duel in Anarctica. And then there was that time Noin took her to the assembly and she ran up and spouted about the Gundams coming to rectify their mistakes. She tagged along on the rebuilding of Sanc Kingdom only to end up watching it burn, then got taken to Romefeller to be trussed up and trotted out as 'Queen Relena' to give them legitimacy.

About the only thing you could say is she was a little chastened by the end, but she's still talking and carrying on with that bloody wide-eyed optimism and HEEEEERO. The kind of shit that had her getting cast as the peace princess hope of the wartorn world in old SRW comics.

Most people who've wrote about war have never been in one. The best stories usually are written by war vets, but most still aren't. No-one who's ever written for Gundam has ever been in a war to my knowledge for instance. And they don't need to be to espouse why it's bad.

You can't deny there is a huge differences between how Tomino deals with war in every Gundam and any other AU.
First of all, Tomino saw by himself the consequences of war and when he talks about war it is to make a commentary on it, not just as a way to get people's attention. Even his most upbeat and happy Gundam shows are commentaries on war and chaos that comes with it, not just a setting he uses because people love it (like highschool settings and so on).
Tomino also filters and interprets a lot society in his works and always to make a point about something. There is fuckton of stuff in his works which is not totally related to war itself or how scary it is, like family, how society affects people and so on.

What does IBO have? Even if there is a lot of serious stuff, it just comes out as childish anime and a show written to have some sort of wish-fulfillment goal because people love edgy characters like Mika or conflicted characters like Orga seriously, it is almost text-book.
What is the whole point of having such serious themes like poverty, child soldiers and prostitution if at the end all there is a big "here, there is this and that. Enjoy, because this is serious stuff".
It is clear enough Okada and Nagai have nothing to say about poverty, child soldiers and prostitution because they know nothing any of that. After all, these aren't actual issues of today's Japan, they are just tools to create easy drama and bait people into thinking they are watching something serious.
And you can tell all of this seriousness is going nowhere because Tekkadan and Mika's actions are always cool as shit, but Okadan and Nagai always need to shove Kudelia or Merribit's stupid pacifism somewhere because you can't openly say "Hey, guys, curbstomping your enemy is totally cool!" otherwise parents would sue the shit out of them and they would never work on anime again.

Tomino is not very skilled, technically speaking, compared with Takahata or Miyazaki or Takahashi. He is an interesting director because he has ALWAYS been completely out of the box, but that has nothing to do with skills and is more related to his thought processes and interests.

But that is the point of Gundam. The pivot of the original series is not the war itself, it is how it affects normal people like Mirai, Amuro, Kai or Fraw and how it forces them out of their normal routines by destroying the worlds they are comfortable with.
The parts about war itself, humanizing the enemy or the conflict of ideologies (Dictatorship VS Democracy or Revolution VS Status Quo) are just background stuff, stuff that Tomino knows because he studied it.
Also another big thing is that Amuro and his family are your average kid and family from the '80s in WWII setting, which is, again, Tomino making a point about the society he lives in through Gundam.
And we never get something like this from any other director or script-writer who worked on Gundam. And that, again, has nothing to do with skills.

This episode is going to be a wild ride. I assume Shino is alive because Yamagi doesn't seem too upset, it's more like tears of joy or relief to me. Guts may or may not be alive, but I assume that he will live. The girls are totally dead I think, but not much can be said about that I suppose. I want Gaelio to win as a plot-twist but I doubt that will happen at all. Ein is totally going to die and whether we get a season 2 will be known probably after this episode.

I really hope astaroth pilot is like garrod. I really want a competent and funny lead. But looking at it's design they'll probably be an edge lord
