It has nothing to do with the CGI, usually.
It's just the mechanical designs being bland as hell and the character designs being bland as hell, and these factors coincidentally existing within a CGI mecha show.
They just need to hire competent designers.

I don't think its the ambition, so much as it's just the aesthetic of the designer(s) being really bland and weak.
The link that I've been seeing, however, is that they aren't hiring designers. They're hiring key animators and telling them to make some designs. The issue here should be pretty obvious.
