I'd rather Anno enjoy what he's working on again, instead of putting years of labor into something he seems to despise at this point.

Anyways, i'm not sure how well his Godzilla will do in the end. Japan liked legendary Godzilla, but that's likely due to Hollywood production values. Toho Godzilla is dead in the water over there. Anno has a expectations of special effects to meet, that might not be within Toho's current budget.

The less he has to do with cartoons, the better. He already barely touches them these days as it is, but to hear his insufferable fans tell it, he's the heir to the animation kingdom. In reality he couldn't give a shit and just wants to direct live-action Ultraman and Godzilla and Rider stuff.
