Something about cultural differences, Western looks at Mecha as tools of war, with focus being put on the pilots/drivers. The mecha is merely a tool, a weapon. Eastern culture draws off the idea that weapons had souls imbued in them so in eastern mecha the bots/suits are more an extension of the pilot. I think it was Culture Shock did an in depth video on the topic.

what happened was that a guy, I think somewhere in rural, continental America, but definately in America, drew up the designs for some Mecha, then he sold the designs to both companies at roughly the same time (he sold them first to FASA, then later to the Macross people). When the Japanese company found out about FASA having the same designs in their game, they sued, and FASA basically just gave up on the few 'Mechs it would mean letting go of.
