The little things it did to the interface to speed things up from Impact, @2, and MX make it easier to go back to than those 3 games. However, because the Alpha series blew its wad so fucking hard storywise with the first game, the plot is mostly comprised of storylines new to that subseries, with a few things that've been hanging since @1, so it doesn't quite *feel* like the same type of continuation of the story that @2 did. There are a few issues with the gameplay like the lack of Hit&Away, squaddies getting less-useful as anything besides SP batteries as playthrough number increases, and weird shit with upgrade tiers, but you at least have the freedom to choose your skill setups. It's a long game since you can't speed up enemy movement on the map, the actual map size is big, and there's a large gap between your and the enemy's starting positions so there's not much to do on turn 1 except cast Accel and move in.
