***READ THE GUIDE***
For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

>tfw running out of a specific color of paint while fixing up an old kit.
Anyway, what'cha workin' on, anons?
>>13981638
I'm trying to finish an hg dark hound just mixed the dark grey paint, maybe I'll finish it this weekend or the next one
>>13981638
I finished prepping a Nemo for priming, now I just need to buy a new can of primer.
I also need to stop putting off painting the last third of my Catsith.
>>13981638
Just finished the kit int eh OP, not working on anything right now and thinking of taking a short break from modeling.
>>13981638
Finishing up white wolf zaku 2. I don't think I'll do painting or panel lining just yet but I'll be working on Bernie's Zaku afterwards.
>>13981638
Graze Kai II Ryusei-go, Grimgerde, and Graze Space Colors just arrived. Gonna be working on them during the weekend.
>>13981638
Trying to get motivated to do the next two in my "To build" queue.
>>13981595
Doing the panel lining on my Turn A and taking silly pictures while I take breaks. I've never done this before so I can tell I'm making mistakes, but I think it looks alright and I'm having fun.
Reminder.
Do not respond to snapshit. Report him when he avatarfags, we'll get him banned eventually.
>>13981779
Just do them, pussy.
Remember, man, they're just HGs. Plow right through if you have to. I just wrapped up my MG V2 ver. Ka and I kinda want to kill myself. To be clear, I mean that I just finished up the lower body of the kit, as the upper body & arms, as well as the two core fighters, were not that bad. Final assembly, and that fucking waist section, were brutal.
>haul came in
>HG Kyrios, Arios, RX-78-2, and Fenice
>MG Zaku II 2.0 White Ogre
>Can't touch them until spring break which is in 2 weeks.
>>13981785
Lighting is meh, so I don't really see any issues.
You using gundam marker or something else? Gray for the white bits, but black for the blue parts. I don't think there's anything to line on the red or yellow..... If you're using gundam marker, just clean up any excess with a cotton swab or your fingers. A bit of spit will help if it's started to dry.
>>13981959
I'm using gundam marker, grey on white and black on the blue. All I have left at this point is the arms, I think I'm doing okay. Really I'm just struggling to find a pressure/thickness that looks right, but that's just part of learning.
Should I use black on any darker colored parts? Turn X, for example, is a weird sort of inbetween light and dark green. Would I want black for that?
>>13981977
Honestly, I find that if you're cleaning up afterwards, pressure is more about waste than anything else. Then again, you may want a thicker line than I do.
At this point, my lining has been exclusively with gray and black, so I have no idea about the Turn X.
>>13981977
>turn x
a dark green sharpie + cotton buds + something that'll wipe off sharpie + microfibre cloth
Currently snapshitting the Dragon Momoko MG Destiny MB.
Holy shit, you really need to file the connectors on EVERYTHING because the fit is so tight they'll cause stress marks. The polycaps on the knees were deformed out of the box (only half of it was molded).
I paid $40 for it so I am not really disappointed since it looks really good.
>>13981977
Cool colors are darkened by blue
Warm colors are darkened by brown
This works on shading and panel limning.
>>13982035
A sharpie? Really? Go ahead... try it... then tell me if you can wipe it off.
>>13982108
Isopropyl alcohol wipes it clean off 100%.
>>13982115
I've always seen that Sharpie is permanent, no mater the rubbing or other chemicals.
Never used it, only going off of the experience of others.
However, it does seem to be a bit too sharp of a contrast to be effective. But this can be subjective.
How easy would it be to make those dino hand from the new bara kit into arms

What the fuck is this, it seems too good to be true.
>>13982230

Can't go wrong with TITANS colours either.
That's a big box.

>buh buh but freshly applied
He's gonna use it for panel lining, you goof.
>>13982275
Well I stand corrected.
Panel lining should be an accent, sharpie is pretty high for contrast.
But like said, it's subjective.
Some nip made a Sazabi out of Omar Shrimps(?).

will we ever get a newer HGUC GunEZ or Gunblaster? Victory has an unfair lack of kitswith the new technology and techniques
So when's next big event for gunpla announcements? Feels like we're dripping what's left of the known kits plus the few being released along side IBO so it won't spoil much.
I just hope system weapons hasn't been cancelled that sries has a lot of possibility left still. Same with other option parts stuff. Some actually new thunderbolt kits get released now that they're being animated, next few revives, rgs for rest year etc.
>>13982393
next weekend iirc
>>13982397
That soon? What hobby show/event is it? Wonder what rumors the builders there got going on.

That dragon thing
Please Bandai. I'll get cancer and force the Make A Wish foundation to make you make them. I'm glad about Victory and V2 love but I can't be satisfied by so little.
Also no F91 models or Crossbone models ever. Granted some Crossbone suits are plain gross looking but I want Diona-chan.
>>13982415
Nice, hope they also announce another parts campaign with more speciality connectors.
I would give my left kidney for any Late UC suit that isn't a Gundam, and I would sell both for a Batalla model.
>>13982439
Batara, whatever, it has kickass goggles and a monoeye track that gives the head a completely different look when the goggles slide up.
>>13982439
>>13982440
>>13982444
That's actually really cool.
>>13982456
The Batara is like the #1 reason why I want to see Crossbone animated. Fuck the Gundams, give me the mooks.
>>13982458
Man I want crossbone pretty bad too. It just seems to me that Sunrise won't do it because they're already selling their flag-ship kit. They want new stuff like IBO and G-Reco so they can sell new designs.
Guess what arrived
Don't have time to wait for answers
>>13982677
Is it fuckin' dragon dil-
>>13982692
all I ever get is disappointment.
But the Barbatos is nice.
>>13982217
I might just paint this thing since there's a lot of the metallic glitter they used in the plastic making marble effects on the surface.. Its really obvious on the blue parts.
>>13982696
Is that gouge mark on the blue hand armor part of the design?
>>13981638
Latest thing I was working on was painting a GM in standard white/red colors to get more practice in using an airbrush. I got frustrated and kinda just left it alone until recently though because no matter how many coats I used, the parts stayed the same primer grey instead of going white.
The yellows and reds turned out fine, albeit darker than I anticipated, but the white coats just.. never worked.
Can anyone tell me what I did wrong? Did I mess up my paint/thinner ratio since I'm still trying to get the hang of it? Was it a problem with my airbrush?
>>13982721
Not sure why, but I read the start of your second paragraph as "The yellows and retards turned out fine".
>>13982692
The kit's price is nice, but man dem legs be flimsy as hell.
Which one next?
>>13982830
Virtue
>>13982830
Hazel
>>13982830
Virtue.Oh, virtue and seravee, I love your chunk so much.
should I go through with my Graze Thanatos idea or just kitbash something else?
Hobby no Toriko's pick of the backpack binders combined reminded me of this shit.
Not sure if I could pull it off, though. Any suggestions for the metal/skull mask? Maybe putty and pla-plate up a graze kai head?
>>13982830
Please paint virtue to look like a turtle
>>13982901
>>13982880
Speaking of which. Do you have the lineart of virtue and seravee?
>>13982875
Now just to fix up the gap between the connection point and armor up the horse bits, and it's perfect.
Probably could use a bow and arrows but details.
which real grad should I get for my first one? Not a big fan of the MK II design, even though I know it's the sturdiest.
>>13982930
Line art? Wha? I do line paneling is that what you mean?
I just like to snap build for the most part
Painting virtue like a turtle sounds cool though...
>>13982957
Oh, for pete's sake, it's plamo general how could you not know what lineart is?
>>13982957
Also does anybody else like to snap build and play with the gundam? I like to play with them with army men...
>>13982961
Yea but what do I need that for? Sorry senpai but please fill me in.
>>13982957
Try and give him a yellow beak and belly. Maybe brown or black lining.
Green or brown "shell" armour with green arms and legs. Maybe yellow fingers if you are feeling really hardcore.
I don't know if it's Blaster has a opening muzzle that kind of peeks out but that could almost be a turtle too.
>>13982966
For easy color scheme testing, obviously enough.
>>13982966
Step 1: Save image
Step 2: Open in MSpaint or somesuch like that
Step 3: Click on paint bucket tool
Step 4: Click on desired color
Step 5: Click on white spaces to experiment with different armor colors to find what looks good
Step 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5 until desired result is found
>>13982972
Shit senpai you really are inspiring me. So the line art is to use in paint? Also his Cannon does open up so it can look like a turtle. Oh shiiii... I painted before but I don't have a spray gun.... I can buy one... but it's gotta be cheap. Saw one at micheals for like $20 bucks....
>>13982976
Using my my phone sorry for the late response k got it. I like the chunk so much I got 2 turtle guys
>>13982986
Honestly I just finished 00 yesterday
And the WHOLE TIME I wish Virtue had more of a colour scheme like lock ons gundam
>>13982721
Try priming the whit parts with white primer instead of gray, white paint is always a bitch tho. Priming them white will save you frustation. Don't give up anon!
>>13983001
yea lock on is nice coloring....
>>13983001
Personally, I'll paint mine in digital camo. All those flat simple white surfaces are just begging for some increasing of visual complexity.
>>13982830

>>13983022

Cause I was going to suggest camo but though "eeeasy now"
>>13983001

>>13983043
Because it's not a correct lineart, it's way too imperfect. Correct one has only 100% black, no midtones. And really jagged edges. Here is a correct lineart >>13982974.
>>13983060

>>13983043
>>13983060
There's a moon website out there that has a metric ton of legit, usable lineart from nearly every gundam series, plus a few MSV and non-gundam /m/ shows.

I mean it is turtle theme. If I go for the real thing it will be a very dark brown. It's to be exaggerated colors because a real turtle color scheme is just mostly very dark colors.

You can always use the color sampler tool, dude.
>>13983300
Bright blue is too bright, for my tastes. I'd swap it for something else entirely.

Try desaturating the middle blue. It doesn't fit at the moment. >>13983313 is right that it's too bright.

>Just fuck my shit up, senpai
For fucks sake my airbrush wasn't playing ball, PSI too low and paint just fluffs out, PSI a little higher and it spiders and scatters.
I had to be ultra super precise with the pressure and amount of trigger and it still made for a shitty job, even when I cleaned the fuck out of all the parts.
Since when did Barnes and Noble start having Gunpla display cases? I saw that at one a couple days ago and thought it was rad.
>>13983988
For a couple years now. Last summer they actually improved them too. Before that 90% of the cases were just a single sad looking hg sengoku astray that was nubby and poorly assembled.

1) Astrays are ugly
2) Different angles are always going to invoke different images
3) Sometimes gunpla isn't anime accurate - this drastically undermines the value of lineart when creating designs
4) of course it looks different when the creator can't even follow their own pattern. A number of sections are different between the right and left images.

Finished my Graze!
Learned the hard way that as sanding the fuck outta points of contact prior to painting the inner frame is necessary to preserving it.
Also gonna have to pick up on seam welding in the future, although I think I may hold off on it until I get more confident in my masking ability.
>>13984443

>>13984477
Looks great, is that spraypaint?
I've been hesitant to start painting because I don't want to invent in an air brush and I'm afraid spray cans will suck.
>>13984855
Spay cans are a pretty okay choice if you don't want to invest in an airbrush. Just hold the can a few inches away, go for nice, even passes, and wait for it to dry and stuff.
I did the red on this Sinanju with a Tamiya spray can. Didn't do the inner frame because the joints were tight as all hell.
>>13984001
I kind of wonder who puts these display cases together. Do they pay an employee to build these, or do they get shipped them already pre-built, or what?
>>13984904
>>13984855
Thank you, I used an airbrush, never used spray cans so I can't comment but I imagine it'd use the same principals as an airbrush just do light coats and you oughta do fine. It'd probably be more unwieldy and expensive in the long run though.
>>13984904
>>13984905
How expensive are those kit if you buy them in store?
>>13984911
I bought a 1/144 freedom gundam for $22
>>13984911
I bought the RG 00 Raiser for about $30 bucks. So, not too terribly bad.
>>13984911
I don't think Barnes and Noble prices the HGs and RGs differently, but from what I remember the Fenice Rinascita was around $54. There was also a RG 00 Raiser and an HG Amazing Red Warrior hidden on the bottom shelf there.
>>13984443
>>13984451
This the 1/100?
>>13984890
>not spraying inner frame/hands gunmetal
>>13984911
No matter what ordering multiple kits from a Japan based retailer like HLJ is going to be cheaper. But for a US based store their prices aren't bad on HG and RG. Especially if you have coupons.
>>13984904
There's just something about going into a store and picking up a box of Gunpla.
to all those people who buy theirs online, I would recommend visiting a hobby shop at least once even if their prices are ass. It's how they can turn a profit
>>13984904
> spider-wrapping the single biggest box there
I'm sure it's some regulation like objects over a certain value but under a certain size get it regardless but holy shit wat. How are you going to just walk out with a box like that?
>>13985143
It's company policy. Anything over a certain value gets spider wrapped and possibly put on the shelves behind the checkout counter. You would actually be surprised by what people have managed to get away with stealing. People can't watch the door all the time and there are tricks to not setting off the alarm.
It's also to prevent people from opening the box and stealing the contents since the way they work is that you can't slide them off or stress them too much without setting off the alarm.
>>13985143
That's actually how the Moaning Lisa was stolen the first time. A dood just walked in, picked it up, then walked out with it.
>>13985130
WTF? I have to buy overpriced merchandise just so that a store can turn a profit... Why exactly?
>>13985167
I remember this one thing from the training videos. This couple stole tens of thousands of dollars in merchandise from B&N and it took a long ass time before they were caught. Their preferred method was to come in with a baby carriage with a blanket draped over it like the kid inside was sleeping, except it was empty. They'd load it up while no one was looking, then the wife would take it into the bathroom to remove all the security tags and stickers from everything, then just stroll out of the store.
>>13985194
>not supporting your local businesses
>>13984904
>>13984905
The stores receive most of them pre-built and are encouraged to build one themselves for the display. IIRC if it has a MG Fenice then an employee built it.
>>13985167
>>13985198
It's obscene how much loss there is in retail. Hell, I remember one time I was out at the grocery store, some guy barely got caught with a pair of spiral hams stuffed in his pants. Not exactly small hams either.

>>13985204
Oh, that's neat.
>>13985264
Why would anyone pay more for something they can get cheaper online?
>>13985265
They're action-bases. Come with an arm and shit.
Apparently they're reasonably sturdy on their own (probably because of the wider overall base) compared to the regular 1/144 bases. They also interlock like other action bases. Also, I just realized what you do with the non-pilots. They're spacers. Stick a Kudelia, Atra, and Orga in between Mika, McGillis, and Gali Gali when making your diorama.

>doesn't understand micro-economics
So, basically, people spend money and the people who got the money spend their money. Hopefully. When you send money elsewhere, it exits your economic system. While you are part of a national {and international} economic system, you are also part of a series of more local economic cycles. Buying locally, even if it's a bit more money, enriches the place where you live as opposed to the places you don't.
Now comes the part where say you were pretending to be retarded this entire time.
>>13985280

Why would anyone bother wiping their ass?
Why would anyone bother wiping down the gym equipment after they're done?
Why not just shit in the middle of the street when you feel like it?
Why clean anything, ever?
Why go out and work when you could sleep under a bridge and masturbate all day?
Because, in the long run, it turns out better for everyone. Yourself included.
>>13985290
Convenience fee, that's the way I see it. My local hobbytown has normally 10 dollar HG kits for the same amount if I used ems.
>>13984911
My local stores prices HGs a few dollars more than the JP sales price but it's not that big of a deal since you get it right then an there.
>>13985301
I really like Hobbytown, the one here is father and son, the kid's maybe 14 but his enthusiasm really sold me on their outlet
>>13985290
Well online shopping and trading is killing off retail right now for that very reason right now. I take it you must be a little younger to not have noticed the vast amount of retail shops closing down because of shit like Amazon
>>13985290
I'm willing to spend a few extra bucks if it means I can pick up my gunpla right there instead of having to wait weeks for it to arrive. Hell, I could probably get everything I'll ever need for this online, but I still go to my local hobby store because it's convenient, I like to browse the collection of kits/paints/supplies, and the owner is a swell guy.
>>13985290
Paying a couple bucks more than what you would normally get online is like purchasing with expedited shipping except you can start building the same day of purchase.
I want to see you order a kit with 1 day shipping from Japan and tell me how much out of the ass you're paying!

Some kits are really bad at standing up; typical reasons are lack-luster joints (definitely an issue on some older designs) and being back-heavy. Not sure if my RG Zetas could stand on their own, but I don't want to risk it.
But yeah, nice thing about the bases is that you can interlock them. The Chara stand plates also have at least 6 slots so you have a lot of variety in deciding how you'll orient your gunpla. Then again, they have to so people aren't forced to put characters on weird angles to get the poses they want. If you're interested, here's a review of one.

The overall design of the Gelgoog is fine, it's just the body that's awful. Thankfully, the Gelgoog Jager fixes that.

>>13985374
Partly it's because it's where Zeon aesthetics finally met proper beam tech in the show. It was the suit Char used before Zeong and was a fair rival for the Gundam for a bit there, plus it's what he had at Texas and in the iconic Lalah battle. It looks mean and has a reputation for being tough. But at the same time, pretty much any variant of it improves the design in some fashion.

Two questions for this thread:
Between enamel or acrylics, which one is best to use on painting inner frames without making the plastic brittle? (in b4 airbrushed lacquers)
For general sanding work on plastics, should I use P95 or N95 masks? ( I have a P100 respirator but it's too clunky wearing it spending a couple hours at the desk. I don't mind when going outside to spray though. )
>>13986389

>Try anime shops, if you have one.
We have two very small ones, and one of them does stock a few gunpla.
It's on the exact opposite side of the country though, and it's not worth the travel time and costs to buy a kit for up to 4 times it's retail price online and in Japan.
I envy Americans, sci-fi and anime just isn't a big thing here at all. Especially if you don't live in the capital

I always tape the decals down so they dont move, then get a coin to apply pressure. You should be able to see the decal move of the sheet. Then lift up half the tape and see if it worked, if not fold it back down and keep using that coin.

>>13987058
It's not all nostalgia though. The grunt designs are solid and generally stick to simple, grounded concepts rather than going all themed-monster-of-the-week or multi-tool clusterfuckery. There's a beauty, an elegance, and a consistency to them. Yes, having a boxy mech only sport a rifle or maybe a beam saber can feel generic, but there's something more authentic in that.
The same applies to the Gundams to some degree - they're more colorful and thematic, but they pick a gimmick, stick to it, and manage to remain stylish.
It's rather like Kabuto or IBO - the mechanical aspects shine, while the rest of the show is a repetitive stream of prancing showponies spouting stiff dialogue.

I feel like it's wrong to say it's relaxing so much as it is fulfilling. It feels good to have an enthralling focus, even if you make mistakes. When I build I usually don't do anything else, except maybe turn background music on to tune everything else out. I guess in a way it's still relaxing, but not because it's lethargic, but because you can focus on one thing for a while.
>>13987494
It really depends on experience and investment to find it relaxing. If you're inexperienced or spent a lot of money and time on a model, you'll be afraid of unfixable mistakes while building. I know I was super tense building my first kit, but after it was done I was satisfied, even if it was a nubby, terribly-lined, poorly-stickered mess.
>>13987658
>I know I was super tense building my first kit

>>13988085
If it's the shitty 90s kits with polycap hands then to replace them you will need to do modding. Modern balljoint hands won't fit them.
Otherwise there's the mentioned build knuckle hands, the builders parts detail up hands, and articulated third party hands like hobby base makes.
>>13988135
They're literally the same same hands as the Build Burning with a different back of the hand

So why don't you then? I once built kits for display for my FLHS. But they discontinued selling gunpla to focus on YuGayShit and Fagic: The Gayening. It was a tragedy, to say the least, but hey at least I got my kits back.

>>13988480
There's some techniques for shakey hands that might help such as learning how to balance your wrists on a table, using two hands, etc though I'm sure you're already aware.
Just practice and experiment it's a hobby, the whole point is to relax and enjoy it for what it is. That shit gets lost here way too often (granted you're right about the amount of spamming shitters here like he who shall not be named)
>>13988480
You'd be surprised at what some decent kush can do for you. If you don't mind me asking, what state are you in? Cause if you're in a legalized state, you can get some medical herb to help with the shaky hands. And if not well... Why not move to Oregon anon? We have some great cities, great small towns, we're far north that our summers aren't crazy hot, and we're right on the Pacific Coast.
The only down side being that winter and spring are rather harsh and cold. Too cold to paint most days.
>>13988480
I can't help much but I've got sweaty and shaky hands so I run into the same issue quite often. My advice would be to only use the knife to cut the nub so it's almost entirely gone, but so that there's still a little bit left. Then get some high grit sandpaper, I'm talking 1000 - 6000, then just sand the hell out of that baby (and the higher grit you go the longer you'll have to sand, but it's worth it). Thumbnail press and voila - smooth without any shitty gouges from cutting too deep, any really obvious stress marks, or unsightly sanding-marks you'd get from using rougher sand paper.

>What was the point of Kimaris Trooper again?
It's a ground variant of the Kimaris. Kimaris is all about the charging thrust attack. In space it just uses its leg boosters and later backpack to do that, but on Earth it can't really fly well and has to contend with Gravity. So the trooper gives it a hover mode and by the look of it lightens the armor so it can retain its fighting style even under gravity.
