I didn't manage to respond to the encoding anon in the last thread before it archived, so I'll slip it here (sorry for ignoring you then). Besides that, feel free to discuss cute magical girls etc as usual.

My cel anime 1080p options were basically:
x264.exe --qpmax 38 --qcomp 0.60 --aq-mode 1 --crf 17 --no-mbtree --psy-rd 1.0:0.0 --aq-s
trength 0.8 --preset placebo --bframes 9 --subme 10
Input was through avisynth, naturally, although for BD sources, fancy filtering is seldom needed. This was a line for 10bit encode, if you use 8bit binary, the qpmax value is supposed to be reduced by 12, if you want to use that parameter, that is. Other oprions carry over to 8bit.

That is however quite slow, so for non-insane people I would advice something like:
x264.exe --qpmax 38 --qcomp 0.60 --aq-mode 1 --crf 17 --no-mbtree --psy-rd 1.0:0.0 --aq-s
trength 0.8 --preset veryslow --subme 10

Or, this (slower - this is basically preset veryslow plus the option --no-fast-pskip):
x264.exe --qpmax 38 --qcomp 0.60 --aq-mode 1 --crf 17 --no-mbtree --psy-rd 1.0:0.0 --aq-s
trength 0.8 --preset placebo --bframes 9 --subme 10 --me umh

crf 17 should look nice but it ends up with quite high filesizes, you might need to actually use "crf 18" instead of "crf 17" and/or remove the "--qpmax 38" option.

I think --no-mbtree --aq-strenght 0.8 and the default strneght of psyrdo (1.0) works best on cel sources, I encoded virtually everything like that (now you can probably stalk out who I am? Ohwell).

Handbrake should expose most of these options to you in some advanced dialogs, too, AFAIK, the only troubl emight be to find how it has renamed them. Godspeed?

I have no clue what any of this means but I'll fiddle around tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks regardless. Also, did an encode today after fiddling around and it looks slightly better, but barely. 2.7gb for the first episode from a 5.9gb BD raw. Late at the moment. I'll post pics tomorrow and try to get it upload if it's final.

And the new one I did last night. The quality is mostly due to my crappy computer since I couldn't let it run that long. Took about 5 hours for the first episode to be like that. But, I'll try it on my brothers computer later on and see how long it'll take to encode at that and possibly a higher setting.
>>
You usually won't notice much encoding difference on a brigt frame like that. The crap appears mostly on darker, low contrast frames. In such scenes, watch for detail or lines in those darker parts getting smeared/artifacty or disappearing. Or areas getting too washed look due to grain/texture disappearing.

Also you didn't post the same frame, so it isn't possible to compare it. If you don't use some special tool, you might need to take more shots and frame-step, before you will be able to catch the proper frame number to compare.

My bad. Here's the correct frame comparison starting from my old encode, the one I did on the weekend, and finally the BD raw. In any case, it doesn't actually look that much different even at half the bitrate but as you said it tends to look a bit crappy on darker, low contrast frames.

However, I'd like to test out an encode with this x264 thingymajig. I have no clue where to start and it's command line driven so any pointers on where to first get a hang of it and learn the basics? Unless the settings on this screen can be changed to get a better quality encode.
>>
>>13972126
There's no easy way. You can try MeGUI and its pre-made profiles and get good results. If you're not happy with it you'll have to learn how to use avisynth and manually edit the .avs input file. Personally that's what I do.
>>
The anime character designs were absolute shit. The OVA did a little better making their characters on model but the TV show looked like fucking garbage. They couldn't even get Hikaru's hair color fucking right.

>>13972210
Don't you mean Fuu? The brown hair instead of the blond? Also, while I like the anime designs, they obviously can't compare to the manga designs.
>>
This never made sense to me.

Hikaru goes from standard sword to fancy magical sword.
Umi goes from standard rapier to fancy magical rapier.
Fuu goes from standard bow to fancy magical 2 great sword??
>>
>>13972884
>Fuu goes from standard bow to fancy magical 2 great sword??
That's the unfortunate thing about bows. They tend to be replaced in the end because swords are just preferred. Just think of it like the Samurai, who use two handed weapons and bows.
>>
>>13972884
They decided a great sword would be cooler than a great bow.
>>
>>13972126
Whew, that's a shit option set Handbrake offers there :/
Reference frames are good for anime, I'd use at least 6-8 (maximum is 16 but the gains are low at that point).
Switch adaptive B-frames from fast to the slower setting, whatever it is named (you want badapt=2).
Motion Est. Method should be UMH (uneven multiple hexagon).
Subpixel Motion Est. I suggest 9 or better 10
Motion Est. Range 16 is not bad, but if you can handle the slowdown, you can use 24 for better compression.
switch Trellis to "always" (or what is the slower option called).
Knock the Adaptive Quant Strenght two notches to the left, that should make it use strenght 0.8.

It looks like you can put the raw x264 parameters (see the wiki posted earlier) into the box on the bottom.

I would disable mbtree by inserting: --no-mbtree

I don't know why they didn't just go with the same art style and studio that did CCS or the same style as the OVA.

And yeah, Fuu's hair was crap too. The whole anime had muted and washed out tone to it that I really hated. Fucking color blind nips.

The thing I disliked the most was that they changed the OT3 palimony ending.

Their first weapons were just random shit borrowed from Presea. Fuu picked a bow at that time because she happens to know how to use one. The new super special magical weapons had to be swords because the Mashins use swords. If you take issue with the fact that Windam has a sword instead of a bow, go complain to CLAMP I guess.

Incidentally, the Saturn game took the liberty of letting Fuu have a bow anyway, to allow for more gameplay variation I suppose.

I really don't want to encode it all if it'll not be very good, but that also depends if anyone else will even consider encoding the raw BD in future.

>>13976998
I know, but an ending like that isn't very interesting. There's no friction or anything left for anything further. It's like if they had a portal into Narnia that they could use at any time to pop in for a chat and not only "when they're needed" to save the world or something. I know it "ended" but the manga was rushed and it just didn't feel complete. More had to happen.

That's because there's no profit to be had. Funimation didn't oversaturate the colors and chop 40% off the picture in the DBZ blu-rays because they thought that was the proper way to experience the show, they did it because the average person prefers that to film grain and black bars on the side of the screen.

>>13982800
Don't make me post the frog. I'm warning you now.
>>
>>13984023
Well, 10bit helps dark areas the most, imo, but a solid 8bit encode should be able to do it.

Honestly, if you want to be minimal about it and have time, just use -preset veryslow, and you'll get 95% there. The x264 preset system is very good and if you don't know what you're doing, you're usually wasting your time.

That said, DEFINITELY use SubMe (subpixel motion est) 10, and no lower than 9 if you're trying to get it out a bit faster. Trellis 2 ("always") is also beneficial, but it's actually required by using subME 10. You want to bump up the ME range to 24, but more than 36 is overkill, in my opinion.

As for refs, some people insist on maxing out refs to 16, but I personally find it useless on cel anime. It makes sense for digital because the frames are identical and static, but 8-10 refs are probably adequate and usually what I use anyway. B-frames I wouldn't exceed past 5 if using mode 2 (optimal). There was an old methodology I followed with mode 1, where maxing out B-frames supposedly increased quality. I'm not mathematically inclined enough to understand *why* that advice was suggested to me (likely on Doom9 somewhere), but mode 2 is far superior, so stick with it. It's also a lot slower, unfortunately.

You're not encoding for hardware devices, so you don't need strict B-pyramid. No-dct-decimate is barely an issue, but I suppose in 8bit, there's a case to be made that DCT decimation *could* be more noticeable given the smaller range of quantization values, but I've never compared it to actually know.

Do you think it's worth spending my time encoding the series at that quality then? I was unsure if the encode was good enough, but if you liked it and want more then I wouldn't mind.
>>
I'd really suggest using crf encoding, that way you won't have fluctuations in quality between the individual episodes. Props for using 15 megabits though!

Just noticed that when I encoded the 2nd episode there now. But, what do you mean by crf encoding? You mean that 20 notches at default thing?
>>
>>14004189
Nope it is different rate control mode (bit allocation).

Basically, crf aims to reach certain quality based on a number you give it, for example --crf 17 (it can be fractional too, the lower, the higer quality you will get). It is basically like when you encode vorbis or mp3 with vbr and give the encoder a quality number. It won't try to hit exact size like two pass, but will use as much bits as it thinks the source needs. That way, easier-to-compress episodes will end up smaller, while hader-to-compress episodes will get more bits to keep them looking good. Basically the encoder maintains a set level of quality and just throws bits as it sees fit, instead of having hard target set by the bitrate parameter. This is universally considered the superior way to do it.

I'm sure handrake has to support this too - I think it is the mode it calls it constant quality (while x264 calls it constant ratefactor). Try setting it to crf 17 (guess). If your test file ends up larger than you intended (say you try the first episode and expect roughly 15kbits), you have to increase the numebr a bit - 17.5, 18, etc.
If it undershoots and you want to splurge more, decrease the value.

I sometimes see people here on /m/ or /a shit on pirates but thanks to piracy every day someone new can watch an old show whose DVDs or blurays sold out years ago.

If you want, you can, but not really demanding anything. They are mainly for the encoder so that he is aware if/how much he's loosing details or grain and like that. I was satisfied watching, as said. My eyes got bad anyway, since my encoding heyday.

>>

Translation tomfoolery aside, that game was really weird. There were a lot of random ass mini quests and shit you had to get, and a lot of the locations didn't look or feel like Cephiro at all. Some characters that were supposed to live end up dead. At first all the FMV cutscenes are lifted straight from the anime, but towards the end there are some that are original and actually look better than the corresponding scenes in the show. Graphics are beautiful and gameplay is mostly okay, but gets really shitty when you finally get the Mashins and it basically turns into an overhead spaceship shooter boss fight.

The SNES game may be a grindy old school RPG, but I'd say it's a lot more satisfactory for fans of the series due to how faithful it is.

Seems like the BD set is getting a lot of attention lately.

I encoded all episodes from my own BDs about half a year ago but never got further than episode 15 with the TS.

They are 720p with some degraining (because holy shit it was way too much, especially in motion), but it didn't affect the lineart or blur anything. A small bit of artifacting on gradients, but nothing noticeable during motion and is still better than the ugly blocking from the grain. Around 400mb per episode on average.

I uploaded some of it to MEGA if anyone is interested.

>>
>>14012368
Try giving it a look. I can't give you a diffpics comparison right now since I'm not at my desktop where I have the transport streams, but they look pretty much exactly the same with the exception being the excessive grain. Remember it's 720p, and MKR is not chock full of animation.

Did they just add those silly lines in the game? Reminds me too much of recent video game translations.

>>14012360
Neato file size but I always prefer my anime when available at 1080p and without filters. Especially older anime. Grain is a natural part of the film and needs to be retained when put to BD. Hence why there's so much of it. Anyhow, your encode reminds me of the remastered sets. But in a good way. I'm sure people who need to save space will prefer it, but I think I'll stick to 2.7gb odd an episode thank you very much.
>>
>>14012414
I don't mind grain, in fact i like it, but MKR has a ton of shitty noise as a result of poor compression. At least the Japanese BDs do. The grain on MKR is not entirely natural. It looks bearable in the transport stream, but when you encode it, it turns into blocky artifacts everywhere, as seen in some of your screenshots. I doubt anyone is going to defend the shit show that was Space Battleship Yamato's grain either.

I'd say around 1gb, 1.5gb tops, for a 1080p should be reasonable. You're not gonna get any more out of it after that point. The only reason I chose to do 720p only was because I didn't want to spend 20h encoding every episode.

What? SBY's BD was amazing. It was great. It looked perfect. I didn't find anything wrong with it at all. Fuck you. But, with all the grain in MKR, the file size unfortunately has to be that large to attempt to retain it at half the bitrate, so obviously there's going to be a drop in quality from the actual BD. Anyhow, the 2nd episode came out better quality than the first... for some reason. And 1-2gb is too small for a BD encode, I think.
>>
>>14012379
I'm an encoder, I do have some experience. And that is generally that people underestimate teh inevitable losses.

Exactly. Although even at 720p I would prefer unsmoothed rips.

Saturn Rayearth was kill'em all Tomino mode. Also random out of nowhere Lafarga x Hikaru shipping (unless that was added in the localization along with all the lol poop jokes)
>>
>>14004404
On the bright side, their shmup localizations didn't leave much room for jokes at all, since they were generally stone-dead serious (especially Taito's Ray series). Though it is ironic that what would have been their next project (the Goemon game for PS2, which would have benefitted from having jokes) got cancelled.

Honestly that's something I could potentially get behind as Lafarga is easily the coolest and least faggy male in the series. Also, the episode where Zagato sends him to fight the girls was one of the first I randomly caught on TV back in the day and it quickly showed me that the show can be awesome. Hikaru goes all honorable mode "he can't use magic so I won't either" and they 1v1 with swords and she gets her face all bloody and shit and I'm like "damn, I thought this was supposed to be some Sailor Moon bullshit, guess not".
Anyway Hikaru is better off unattached and Lafarga eventually gets awarded a hot brown waifu, so that's fine.
