The original Macross isn't any better music-wise and suffers some major QUALITY from time to time, but the overall story is much more competently made.

DYRL and Plus are okay too. You watch for the gorgeous animation, but only that.

While each Macross series deals with Love triangles, space battles with transforming mecha and the power of culture and music, the percentage each main pillar is given varies from entry to entry with the original SDF being the most well balanced. It's perfectly naturally to love Plus for instance and hate Frontier or to love Frontier and hate 7. To each their own, and if you give us a little bit of insight into what aspects of anime you like, then I'm sure there will be a few helpful anons, who would be happy to point you to the Macross that will fit you best.

Why would you watch Frontier without watching the previous shows first?

I mean, everyone's free to watch what they want, but Macross shows depend a lot more on you watching the previous entries than franchises like Gundam and Kamen Rider.

There's a new character in Delta who is a descendant of a couple from OG Macross who were also featured (as well as their siblings) in Macross 7. Songs from previous entries will return, as well as other cameos/nods.

If you disliked the characters in F I think you will also have a hard time with SDF.

The show was very enjoyable up until the last 6-7 episodes, where the characters act (even more so than usual) like assholes towards each other and forces boring and predictable drama when it was given relatively little focus in the other parts of the show.
