Who's your favorite mecha designer, /m/?
It might be a generic answer, but I'd have to say Obari.
Hasegawa
Ebikawa or Gyoubu
Check him!
>inb4 butthurt over calling Obari a designer
Seriously though, mine would probably be Kunio Okawara. Especially when Obari then does the animation designs based on his original artwork.
Makato Kobayashi
>>13928100
Ippei Gyoubu. man this artist going places and turning mecha designs world upside down
>>13928159
Nagano
The guy who designed the robots I see being bullied in those videos.
>steal designs from Macross, Dougram and Crusher Joe while developing battletech
>get sued by a lot of companies
>design original mechs for video game in the same universe as table top game
>end up with pic related
What a long way they gone through to stop being "weeb".
>>13928100
Kamille Bidan
Izubuchi. In particular, I love the stuff from Patlabor and Gundam 0080.
Alexander Iglesias(Flyingdebris) too for his high detail battletech art and some of the design makeovers. I really like the Raven, Commando, and Centurion he did for MWO.
>>13928211
That thing is shit tho
>but I'd have to say Obari.
OBARI IS NOT A MECHA DESIGNER
HE DIDN'T EVEN DESIGN THE DANCOUGA
>>13928308
Well, its not your "am i kawaii uguu" gundams.
Western designs always trying to represent something more appropriate and realistic.
>>13928321
It is less realistic than gundams though
>>13928323
Your low quality bait almost made me laugh. This mech can actually be built in real life, while your gundam is absolutely impossible.
Gundams are basically giant flying anime girls, not mechs. Some of them even have skirts, lol.
>>13928321
>>13928328
so mad
>>13928328
That thing would fall over as soon as it fired its guns baka
>>13928321
>realistic
just gritty aesthetic like votoms, giant robot griffin is more realistic than that
>>13928333
That's why it has inverted legs, to make it balanced on the ground while firing.
Now if your gundam would fire in "space", it would fly away without stopping. And on the ground your giant ass probably wouldn't even move, cause it has inappropriately big sizes.
>>13928332
Nice projection, filthy weeb.
>>13928345
>giant robot griffin
What?
Gundams should fear Battletech universe robots.
Cause this thing can beat G Gundam.
>>13928355
more stable than gendums or chickenlegs.
aerodynamic as fuck.
looks dumb but you'll be scared shitless when you realize that thing just raped your entire squad.
>>13928351
Painting something brown doesnt make it realistic anon
It certainly doesnt make it look good either
Also why does it have a big glass window instead of a camera and a screen like gundams? Idiot
>>13928382
Painting something red doesn't make it 3 times faster too, anon.
Obviously glass window is because cockpit looks like an aircraft one.
>>13928377
Going to agree on that. 4 legged mechs aren't jokes. Battletech has them too.
But if i would have been forced to choose what nip mech designer i like, i would choose some works by Yoji Shinkawa, especially his works for metal gear (i hate ZOE, its disgusting).
>>13928401
>Battletech has them too.
yes but battletech is boxy shit like star wars at at, which is terribly unrealistic, not to mention ugly.
even sky lynx from transformers is more realistic than that.
>>13928420
>ugly
This is what weeaboos all about. They always complain about looks.
Also star wars had great mechs.
>>13928153
This, or Kazuhisa Kondo
>/m/ grabs the obvious bait.
As if I expected anything else.
Anyways, my favourite is Kawamori. He's made some of most well working transforming mecha and I like the sleekness and aerodyamic appearance. Though he has been rather stagnant after the Frontier designs.
>>13928153
Most definitely.
>>13928510
>Macross lover dislikes mechwarrior.
As if i expected anything else.
>aerodynamics
I laughed at your "planes with legs" a lot, thanks. Its even worse than worst gundam bullshit i've seen.
>>13928153
>>13928444
Same. Anyone who makes fat, evil looking machines is good in my book.
He isn't really a mecha designer, but this Ash Wood guy made his own interpretation of the Zaku.
>>13928401
Most real world military vehicles aren't this boxy and styleless. You have to really try to make something this ugly.
>>13928552
Sigh. I guess I'll bite as well.
I also like Battletech. Especially the FD and Shimmy redesigns. And quite a lot of the original old goofy lineart mech have a certain charm.
Also Battletech has "planes with legs" and most Battletech designs are based on Macross Destroids and Okawara's Dougram designs so stop acting like everything Mechwarrior has is made by realistic engineering in mind, even if you are a troll.
And by aerodynamics I mean they appear aerodynamic. In reality I know they are not. But having flying mechs with more rounded surfaces is somewhat more believable than expecting literal bricks to be superior to planes.
>>13928629
It was only like that in the beginning (pic related).
They later got rid of all macross and other weeb themed vehicles, when mechwarrior series came out. They were forced to get rid of them because of legal reasons.
>you are a troll
No, its just whole board seems to never discuss non-japanese mechs.
>But having flying mechs with more rounded surfaces is somewhat more believable than expecting literal bricks to be superior to planes.
Still, plane "spreading its legs" would instantly lose its momentum and go into rolling. Western sci-fi is better cause it never forgets about realism.
>>13928661
Western shit is no fun and only has dull gray, green, white or black color.
Always fun to see a weeb come along and be a westaboo on this weeb board
>>13928661
I agree that western mechs are needlessly shunned in /m/. Though I really don't categorize designs as western or eastern. Both have all kinds ideas for designs.
Still, I thought you as a troll at first but you really seem to be stupid enough to think that all western (read: Battletech) designs are by default more realistic.
>Still, plane "spreading its legs" would instantly lose its momentum and go into rolling.
That's kinda the point. Switching to gerwalk midflight acts as a huge airbrake and enables the VFs to do fancy maneuvering. Why is the machine stable during that and why aren't the legs being ripped of? It's overtechnology, ain't gonna explain shit. Just like Battletech has mechs that have jump jets in their backs, which would cause them to faceplant the moment they are fired. But so does Gundams.
I'm just saying that mecha designers aren't engineers and anime and video game mecha are by no means realistic. There are just some detailed features that give the appearance of realism within the setting of a particular mecha. And Battletech or other western settings aren't the only ones to achieve this. There are bad and good examples, which I'm too lazy to lay out here.
And sometimes unrealistic things can be fun too. Widen your views a bit instead of klinging to a narrow mindset of that only "realistic" mecha are allowed.
>>13928661
>would instantly lose its momentum
>never forgets about realism
Let's not be too silly, here. Nothing loses momentum instantly, thank you very much Isaac Newton. The legs would create a huge amount of drag and would reduce the effectiveness of the lifting surface. This maneuver, however, is pretty much exclusively used to slow the plane down *on purpose*.
But in the really real world, there is absolutely no advantage to build a robot with an extremely high center of gravity and a huge forward silhouette. A three meter tall tank is simply a smaller target to hit than an eighteen meter robot. Treads are simply more stable than legs. Low center of gravity is simply more stable than high center of gravity (ask an Ewok). Battletech chicken-walkers are just as patently absurd as VFs or Gundams.
Elementals, maybe, but not battlemechs.
>>13928100
I like me some obari shit, but his stuff looks like he only ever designs one robot and then tweaks the armor a bit to make it look different.
Also don't know if artist ever drew something else, but the Machinas are my favourite robot designs.
>>13928918
Those two have done a few other notable works lately, including an Ultraman one and a Getter.
But yeah, they do some damn good shit.
Is there even any transformable mecha as elegantly designed as a VF?
>>13928918
There was also Bakuraiga, though that got canned, and the new Getter manga
>>13928100
1. Ebikawa.
2. Katoki.
3. Ishigaki.
Special mention goes to Kyoshi Takigawa, I want to see him do an original design.
My holy trinity is Akitaka Mika (design), Izubuchi (aesthetic) and Obari (style). Okawara would be here too, but all three of these designers have traces of him, so it's fine.
>>13928140
Yeah I'm gonna go with this one
>>13928918
That's because all he ever does is take other peoples designs and put his own "style" onto it. Hell, even the three or so robots he was actually the designer for over his entire career look extremely derivative of most everything he's worked on.
Kazumi Fujita. Very unique, diverse designs and draws the surliest robot faces.
OP here, who gives a shit about how realistic they are. All mechs would fall over and be completely useless if you blew off one of their legs, so who cares? Just good designers.
>>13928100
Ishikawa
Hajime Katoki
>>13928100
Ikuto Yamashita
>>13928100
Same here. Obari. Just love 'em designs.
>>13928926
That's a cyborg. Do cyborgs count?
>>13928556
>Zaku
>no skirt
Fuck off
>>13928415
REX and D-Walker are pretty cool, the PW stuff is alright. SAHALANTHROPUS and REY are pretty bad though.
Syd Mead
>>13928159
i really want a show, preferably non gundam where hes entirely in control of art direction. It would be interesting to see something entirely in his style
>>13928556
>>13935825
Don't forget how he REMOVED THE FUCKING MONOEYE
Shoji Kawamori.
