00 season 1 was loved after the Thrones appeared. It was painful to people early on but Ash Like Snow signified a shift in the show. Being here for Setsuna attacking the Thrones, Lockon vs Ali, Hallelujah vs Soma and Sergei, CHRISTINE SIERRA!!, Patrick and Tierra taking each other out and people thinking Patrick was dead and debating if it was him in the epilogue, Ore-tachi was Gundam da! and aitakatta, aitakatta zo! It really isn't. It has extraordinarily poor pacing, overall extremely poor animation and art quality, shitty characterization and basically a non-existent plot with extremely predictable writing.
If you don't think about it, then it comes off as okay. But when you really digest the fact that there has been so much wasted potential and that the entire show has just been so painfully bad, then the hate makes sense.

Sure, all of the aforementioned flaws are found in a few other shows, but at least they were entertaining or had cool fights. I genuinely cannot think of a single reason why IBO is any *better* than any other series that's a result of IBO's strengths (if it has any) and not another show's weakness.

Wasted potential is characteristic of the majority if gundam shows i'd reackon, even moreso if you expand out into the rest of mecha.

gundam has always had problems with pacing and wonky character arcs. AGE 3rd gen, 00s2, chunks of ZZ and Greco, BF TRY, F91, even turn A and 0079 drop the ball with pacing for not insignificant chunks. IBO's faults in that department don't seem especially heinous beyond what those other shows pulled.

And IBO has managed to dodge some of the more common gundam pitfalls, like MC pilots that go full understanding and have entire characters arcs dedicated to angst.

Maybe because I was behind until the other day when I marathoned from ep 8 to current, the 'nothing happens' effect wasn't as severe. But I'd rank it as more engaging than stuff like Wing, which was a total snooze fest, or AGE part 3, which was aggressively bland and dropped twice before finishing.

It's mostly a thing in the AUs, particularly the post-millennial ones. The usual way it goes it, we have a guy that gets put into a Gundam for whatever reason, has little issue fighting and killing if he has to. Then something happens and he has an epiphany that war is bad after all, resolves never to kill again, and spends the rest of the series yelling at people to stop fighting from the cockpit of the single most advanced combat machine on the field. Bonus points if the reason he changes is because he met some pacifistic princess type, and he continues fighting but uses his lopsided advantage in tech/skill/special-snowflake-birth to just disable everything he sees.

Mind, it isn't -just- a Gundam thing, there's plenty of other shows and genres that do it too, just often there it's used as a way to give the hero the moral high ground before he kills the bad guy, the whole "I gave you a chance to change your ways, now you leave me with no choice!" bit.
