That's the show's legacy. Pretty phenomenal if you ask me: a mecha show that, even on /m/, nobody gave a damn about the robots or the plot's vicissitudes. Nothing else to say but realize that Kawamori and the rest of the people keeping Macross as a franchise have given up. Given up on science fiction altogether or even telling an interesting story. The problem is, much like 7, I'm having trouble getting really into it. 7 came after SDF and Plus (which was great fighter jet porn with the coolest concert in history if a bit weak on story) and felt weak in comparison. Frontier comes after Zero which I felt was a fucking masterpiece and the purest expression of what it means to be Macross.

As with everything else in the franchise though, Frontier is good.

The City 7 hijack is when things start 'happening' but doesn't really start expanding on its potential as a story until the Sound Boosters come into play. Then 7 is pretty much good from that point on. Doesn't really help the characters much though.

I didn't know Zero was so disliked. I thought it was amazing. The themes of man's drive to evolve and change as well as the overarching message that it is through harmony and trust that we'll advance and thrive were strong and represented very well. The CGI was weird at first but after five minutes I was used to it and the fights were amazingly well choreographed showing the perfect uses of the three modes.
The music was awesome with clashing tones of tribal primitive stuff and the usual Macross flair.
The characters, while not the best in Macross at all, were interesting and it had the best bro ever conceived, Roy, in a leading role.
It got very off the wall and weird, especially the ending, but I thought that was perfect as a representation that the protoculture are still far ahead of us and will be for a while. We can't understand yet because we aren't walking with them.
I would say it's my favourite Macross. Maybe second to SDF.

Zero was a lot harder to watch when it first came out - it didn't have Frontier giving it additional context and meaning, and it had a reaaaally drawn out release schedule. One episode every eight months, from memory.

It was an experience that at the time kind of dragged on, and episode 5 pretty much face planting after the cliffhanger 4 ended on kind of killed it for a lot of people.

Also those dvds cost me like $85 a pop so that added a little more insult to injury. I've come around since and think it's pretty ok, though.

It felt like they were acting like a grown up version of those modern-day anime love triangles where everybody acts retarded for the sake of drama and I really couldn't stand anybody as a character except for that one guy who was making Isamu's YF. All he wanted to do was get his plane made.

I may also be somewhat bitter about the actual 'twist' about what split them all apart being underwhelming as all fuck

I think Zero is just "okay" myself but I can't imagine watching it over OVA release time. I'd probably absolutely hate it. The weird stuff would just come out of nowhere

Macross has pretty fucking terrible stories in general. All of them. Even SDF is stupid as fuck. But that doesn't mean there's nothing to enjoy.

I don't think anyone EVER liked Plus for the story. They like it because of how much effort and research went into it. It was made specifically for the people who like planes (and planes that turn into robots). The plot is only there to string events together. It clearly isn't the main focus of the series.

Which is why I fully admit the animation of the planes and music is fantastic on a technical level but practically everything else falls about Plus falls flatter than even usual because of how much focus is on VFs.

I read somewhere Plus wasn't even originally supposed to be a Macross entry and just some spinoff called Variable Fighter which would make a lot fo sense
