The VF-1 has a lasting legacy though.
Every other VF after it is referred to as a Valkyrie, regardless of their name.

The EVA series were only as unstoppable as they were because it's Eva, and the plot is out to get the protagonists.

If Shinji was able to actually make it on time, or Asuka didn't have her power cut, they'd probably have won, because Asuka was fucking them up till her power ran out.

But this is Eva, where everything goes wrong because fuck you, robots can't save you stop watching anime and be a salaryman so says Anno, so it doesn't work out.

Machine Calibers are absurdly powerful for a grunt unit. Unfortunately, in the context of their own setting, they are not hugely successful against the enemy they were made to fight because Hideazue are crazy.

Or... I guess it depends on perspective. An individual machine caliber can reliably kill hundreds of Hideazu with beamspam, the problem is they are outnumbered by thousands so they still get overwhelmed. They lose the battle, but their kill to death ratio is incredible.
