Please tell me that I'm not the only one who thought this OVA was a steaming pile of crap.

You are the only one.

I won't tell you that, but I'll telly you to get your taste checked.
>>
How dare you, Sir, shit on Super Dimensional Fortress Arjuna, how DARE you, Sir?

People who say frontier was the worst entry in macross have clearly never seen this shit show.

Is it more annoying than Plus?
>>
The worst part was the wait for each episode. It made the high points really shine but made the dull parts drag.

>>13764261
It is more bland in every way. If you'd rather have a consistent "eh" show with "who?" characters over a rollercoaster ride with asshole characters, watch Zero.
>>
The production values were really damn good, and the fights were awesome, but I'm not a huge fan of how much retconning they did, and just the general style of how it was done.

They established in SDF that Valkyries have a battroid mode and that it's top-secret because they realized from analyzing the Supervision Army ship that they would need to fight giants. Yet for some reason the anti-UN forces were the ones to develop the giant robot mode which has no practical use in combat against other humans. I guess you could argue that since destroids were pre-existing, they just decided to make a giant robot mode for their fighter planes too, but you could also counter-argue that destroids were also built as giant robots for possible fights against giants too. It just felt a bit forced just so that they could have Valkyries dogfighting in a prequel OVA.

I didn't like the whole mysticism aspect either. The whole birdman thing felt more like magic rather than Protoculture remnants, what with how a bloodline priestess controls it. There was also the shit with those researchers' hypotheses about Protoculture, and even inventing the word, when again it was established in SDF that they learned the word from Bodolzaa.

Seeing Roy in action again was pretty nice, but giving him another girlfriend before Claudia slightly rustled my Jimmies. His character was effectively the same as it was in SDF, but it felt a bit forced, like they added him in just to have him.

Overall it felt like a half-baked Macross that was made just because of an anniversary. The only real thing it had that a Macross show has is the Valkyries, singing wasn't even a huge part of it outside of controlling the birdman, and there was no love triangle to speak of. Even the Valkyrie fights felt a bit off since they were doing shit with them that you don't see in SDF, sort of like the kind of stuff that happens in MS Igloo.

How good Zero is is inversely proportional to how much you've seen of it.

It starts off great and somehow manages to only get worse and worse with each episode, culminating in a steaming pile of shit that I can only assume was some sort of bizarre prank planned out by Kawamori during one of his marijuana breaks.

It's honestly Macross at its worst. Almost made me drop the franchise after completing it.
>>
It can't be worse than 7, can it?
>>
>>13763920
While I wouldn't call it crap it sure as fuck wasn't good
>>
>>13765356
>How good Zero is is inversely proportional to how much you've seen of it.
You're saying if Zero is your first Macross you'd love it?

>>13765369
7 isn't all bad. It's just kind of repetitive.

I think you mean "It can't be worse than Plus"
>>
>>13765419
I'm saying you'll only love Zero at the start, and by the end you'll feel like someone bent you over and rammed theirs into you dry.
>>
>>13763920
When I first saw Zero back in like '08 I thought it was pretty good. Not as much as the original or Plus, but good nonetheless.

Then I started browsing /m/ and came to the conclusion that one can't win against the hivemind.
>>
Pros
>top tier action choreography

Cons
>Plot
>Dated CGI
>Characters

So an uglier looking Macross Plus
>>
>>13765419
No, 7 IS all bad. It's not "just kind oft repetitive", it has a fucking stupid plot and terrible production values even for a TV show. Even just from a technical standpoint that show is a pain to watch.
>>
>>13765586
>top tier action choreography

Too bad the scene direction is absolute ass.

The Itano style that permeates Macross doesn't mesh well with CGI technology.
>>
>>13765608
>it has a fucking stupid plot
This franchise isn't for you.
>>
>>13765333
>Seeing Roy in action again was pretty nice, but giving him another girlfriend before Claudia slightly rustled my Jimmies. His character was effectively the same as it was in SDF, but it felt a bit forced, like they added him in just to have him.
The scene where he defused the mine was pretty suave.

Macross Zero had awesome action, animation and music. I also liked the story and characters despite the limited running time.

It was awesome back then and still is, if you don't agree don't even talk to me, fuck y'all haters

I actually liked it OP. I came for the fighterplanes and Zero delivered.
>>
>>13765333
Roy having another girl bugged you? He always struck me as a womanizer.
>>
7 is still the worst Macross anime
>>
>>13766044
I stand by this anon on thos issue.
I've wanted more mecha porn, I've got mecha porn. Plus sweet Tomcat action.
>>
>>13766044
>>13766335
If a show had great .echa porn but everything else about it sucks, I don't think that makes it good
>>
>>13763920
It was okay until the nice singing lady who made rocks float turned into a giant plantbirdthing. Not really good, just okay.
But BOY did that ending totally shit the bed.

The SV-51s were pretty cool, the enemy pilots were charismatically evil, but everything about the ancient legends and birdhumans was just stupid. Having the Protocultures seed the earth with humans was kind of cool, but then to turn it around and have "oh, btw there was also ANOTHER alien race that seeded earth too, but didn't spread past this one island in bumfuck nowhere over thousands of years of nautical travel" was just dumb.
>>
>>13766357
>plotfags

Giving you the benefit of the doubt, and not to sound like a douche, if a show looks good, it's probably got a good chance of being a good show. Plot can be easily hand-waved as long as it's somewhat coherent. With visual media, the plot is just a vessel to get from cinema porn to cinema porn.

Granted, if the acting, music, editing, and even plot are communally shit, then it's probably "not good", but most of Zero is alright, except for the plot, which really is the most insignificant part of the cinematic aesthetic.
>>
>>13766461
>plotfags
This is a thing? Really? On /m/ where even the slightest mistep on the part of a mecha anime especially modern ones is called out? Okay fine whatever.

Anyway, it's not just plot. There also has to be not-shit characters and a decent story you'd want to follow. Also considering Zero was all about how trippy its plot was in trying to contribute to the lore I think that would take more precedence over the plot compared to something like Plus which was literally more about its fights along with a love triangle tumor on top.

I know anime is a visual medium but I don't think you can be into the mecha genre especially watching older mecha and only care about the animation side of it when many of these shows don't look that great and are remembered for their plot and characters
>>
>>13766399
>another alien race
There was only the Protoculture.
They seeded the planet, then left a superweapon that only humans from a specific area can activate.
>>
>>13766495
>humans from a specific area
Nah, the Nomes are descended from the Bird Humans. That's why there was all that BS about their blood. They're not normal humans, they're descended/interbred with another race.
>>
>>13766492
>This is a thing? Really? On /m/
Well yeah, /m/ is full of plotfags and it's sad. It's just a canned response I like, but don't like using it without any explanation.

Characters are actually what I'd rank just above plot in terms of relevance. In a very crude sense, characters ARE plot devices, but that's just me.
To use a common example. Star Wars is not good because of it's characters, but they do help solidify it. If Luke was Anakin-tier, and the rest of the cast was super dull, I don't think the other things that made it good would be rendered inert the Trench Run or Alderaan's Destruction and their accompanying scores wouldn't be any worse.

>Also considering Zero was all about how trippy its plot was in trying to contribute to the lore I think that would take more precedence over the plot compared to something like Plus
Ok, that's fair.

Re: age. You can make concessions for some of that stuff given the tech level, but even though there are a lot of liberties with "shape" in older stuff, there's plenty of emphasis on visual flair. Like Ideon unleashing 13 Barrels of Hell, or the Daedalus Punch.
If we wanna be silly we can talk about how a lot of early, early motion pictures looked abysmal, but they had a ton of effort put into them to make the "cool" happen, and accordingly there are many well regarded pieces from that era.

Anyways, feel free to disregard all of this cause I really don't dig much of anything /m/ Bones has put out.
>>
>>13766636
>Well yeah, /m/ is full of plotfags and it's sad
No it's not. A lot of /m/ anime is really dumb. I mean really dumb and not like super robot dumb, I mean "trying to actually tell a serious story but it comes off as retarded" dumb
>>
>>13766657
>A lot of /m/ anime is really dumb
And yet people on /m/ obsess over it, thus making them plotfags.

It's got no need to be smart, it's just a way to get things moving on the screen.
>>
>>13763920
Nah, yeah.

It's pretty shit. Don't feel bad.
>>
>>13765882
Where did this meme even come from?
>>
What in the fuck.
>>
>>13767348
Don't worry, that episode doesn't really go anywhere for the main plot.
>>
>>13767348
Poetry.
>>
>>13766357
>I don't think that makes it good
But anon, I said that I liked it, I never said that is was good.

I'm not a hipster that can only enjoy shows that have no flaws, I'm fine with watching something that I like even if other aspects of it aren't as good as they could be.
>>
>>13766517
The implication was that their bloodline was edited by the Protoculture. That bird human stuff seemed to be a corruption of an old memory about the AFOS superweaponthingumy.

of course it doesn't--except for one of the main characters being related to a character in zero.

>>13770432
It's five fucking episodes, holy shit.
>>
>>13770432
The MC in Zero falls for a tribal island girl whose bloodline is important because ANCIENT ALIENS, Sara Nome.

One of the main characters in Frontier, Sheryl Nome, is descended from Sara's little sister.

That's literally the entire connection.
