Why are there no good japanese spaceship designs?
I've been searching for years and years and have yet to find a single example that impresses me. Artists just seem content to rehash McQuarrie, Mead, and Cantwell designs and don't know any colours other than gray or white. This is humorous since "japanese spaceship design" essentially means "knockoff western spaceship design" yet it's often held in opposition.
Is there anything good at all?
Seeing as this is copypasta'd from the "Western Mecha is 75% shite" thread, I'd just say it's down to taste.

O always thought that the two-armed White-Base-and-Macross-esque ships were pretty ugly, to be entirely honest.

>"Like hell that thing's a Quasi-Bahamut. It's a Leviathan"
I really like Musashino's design though. The bow looks really good.

Nothing of interest from Macross or Infinite Space? Or Xenosaga or Gundam or Raystorm or Silpheed or any of those other bull hell games featuring spaceships as regular opponents?

That comes from real life though.

These are nice and all, but they are clearly rip offs of western space ship design. I mean the Exelion is basically a blue star destroyer. Anything actually original and different?

Anon, please.

Like your pasta?
I wish they went full weeb on /m/ and banned all western shit

well yamato obviously isnt original
I honestly don't know what you want, OP. In your opinion, what makes a "good Japanese ship design"? What is "actually original and different" to you?
There are only so many ways you can design a spaceship, and it's not that easy to point which design features are "western" or "Japanese".
This one is as different as they come (Junji Okubo, For The Barrel)

Agreed
>>13751962
I'm so tired of pasta day in and day out that I can't even bring myself to hyperbole a response to OP.
Let's just post ships. All the ships. Don't care if it's western, eastern, or space nazi eskimo aztecs.

see, I love industrial designs. Probably part of the reason I get a little annoyed when people say boxy mechs are trash, because in my mind it ought to look mechanical and efficiently designed, etc.
I dunno man, maybe i'm just an old man inside
>>13752016
>efficiently designed
But they usually aren't. People just take the aesthetic and reshape it into a mecha without thought for how it would actually work.
God damn are the Harlock ships badass. My favorite Space Pirate ships.
>>13752016
When people complain about that sort of thing, they're talking about the literal boxes on legs that you see all the time in things like battletech, which are neither efficient nor aesthetically pleasing.
Industrial-style mecha designs can be done well, people just tend to complain about how often they're done poorly.
As a fan of western mechs, I don't think this argument works as well for Japanese space ship designs.
Fuck it, I'm posting Chris Foss. This is a concept for the Dune film.
Heartily recommend picking up a book of this guy's art if you can find it.
>>13751368
Western artists ripoff nip robot designs and nips ripoff western ship designs. Seems like a perfectly acceptable eye for an eye
>>13752066
i've been meaning to get his book for a while now
>http://boingboing.net/2014/01/09/plagiarized-paintings-and-the.html
this shit is infuriating
>>13751797
>Anything actually original and different?
"Original" and "different" are not innately good things in design. Good design thrives on instant recognition of purpose and intent. Make it too alien and people won't know its ass from its elbow.
>>13752059
Have you seen Jodoworsky's Dune?
It's easily one of the best documentaries I've watched in years.
>>13751797
>I mean the Exelion is basically a blue star destroyer
Why? Because it is vaguely shaped like a triangle? Because it has nothing else in common.
>>13752170
I probably should, the Foss book I have goes into the production a bit, at least on the design side of things.
>>13752234
If we're applying the same logic as the Western Mecha thread, that's pretty damning.
>>13752134
>>13752130
i love this guy's stuff
>>13751368
I was actually thinking about this the other day when I came across this topic on quora
https://www.quora.com/What-are-some-of-the-best-looking-fictional-spaceships-ever-designed
I really had trouble thinking of memorable, stand out spaceships compared to the stuff posted there. Maybe we are too focused on the mechs. I love all the ship designs in Cowboy Bebop though, top tier
>>13752126
So all I have to do to make 5 million is take any Chris Foss painting, blur out the background and increase red tint a couple percentage points and I'll have a masterpiece?
>>13752234
