Field Repair

Basically what this means is that rather than the mobile suit being fresh out of a factory, it's quite the opposite. Whether it's trudging through dense jungles or dodging debris in asteroid belts, your mobile suit has seen some better days.
You've been out in the field for quite a long time now, nearly half a year of active duty in the front lines and your personal mobile suit's pretty banged up. What's worse is the fact that there isn't a maintenance bay within several thousand kilometers of your local area that's capable of making any major repairs. Your unit's engineering crew has resorted to patch work and jury-rigging to keep your machine operational. Stray fire might have crippled its legs and arms or otherwise dealt considerable damage to a mobile suit's systems meanwhile some units have simply lost bits of armor and panels to the elements and have been forced to patch weld metal sheets over the exposed inner workings.
In any case it's beaten to hell but somehow you and your team have somehow kept it chugging along and now command's ordered all units operating in your theatre to fall back to form a defensive line against the enemy offensive.

I'm having an issue with sanding nubs down on my pieces.

What I notice is it feels like the nub itself isn't getting sanded down, but instead everything around it is. I'm using 1000 grit and 2000 grit sandpapers I bought from an auto shop, and yet no matter how I try to sand the nub off that little white spec never goes away and I'm afraid I'm gonna end up sanding off a huge portion of the piece trying to get rid of it.

Any tips on how I can improve my technique? Should I use a higher grit sandpaper? Lower? Some other tool?

Can you put your sand paper around a block or an edge of some type? I'm guessing your sand paper is just folding around your piece sanding everything instead of just the nub

Start with a 400 grit then go to 600 then 800. 1000 is for polishing and buffing. Also if you have a steady hand and a sharp xacto try shaving the nub first then sand.

Decided to do away with the Ez-Sr backpack on this thing because it was too bulky and heavy and looked awful. Found a way to just mount the radome to the backpack and I think it looks much better now.

What do you do when you have to many models? I find it hard to put any in a box or just throw them away, maybe my shitty HGs like the GM but all my MGs need love even early ones like Kamper or God.

I just ordered the 1/48 Layzner. Any opinions on it? Looks kind of like an MG to me

More detail and articulation, you can attach all the weapons at once thanks to hardpoints on the weapons and body, the swing arm for the guns is less annoying to pose with and more articulated, You don't need to disassemble and re-arrange anything to open the missile hatches, and the blades can be handheld without attaching them to the rifle.

It's an all around improvement over the HG.

Which Victory Gundam model kit is better, the standard Victory Gundam or the V Dash? I know the V Dash comes with a Hexa head, which makes it slightly more appealing to me, but I want to know about overall quality

Still not going to be able to work on kits due to school, but before total silence I put together a case for some of my kits, and I also finished, GP02. Some of you who have been here a while may remember my wing binder masking tragedy but it's been fully fixed, you can't tell it's there anymore, and I finished lining and detailing it and the other crap that was left.

here's what happened to the wing binder, I was removing the masking around the silver parts and the white lifted off. In the end i fixed it by liquid masking around the exact edges of the hole, then painted it white enough to be slightly above the original surface, then wet sanded it back down with 6k-12k grit paper after removing the liquid mask. Worked well.

I am almost done painting and building the old as fuck Zaku Tank model kit, and it's been a depressing experience. I can't believe people put up with this shit 30 years ago. Why must so many parts be poorly molded and have mismatching sizes? This is seriously worse than chinese bootlegs. I can't fucking get the chest to stay with the tank armor because of this shitty mold. I don't understand. Why? Why? Why? I mean atleast your get waterslides for stickers, so that's nice. WHY?

I'll post the picture of it tomorow in its finished self before I apply a topcoat... but I mean fuck man. This kit needs a revive so bad. If we got a Dom Prototype then we can get Psycho Zaku and a Zaku Tank too. Godamn it.

It looks fine, I don't know why you'd be worried about looking too close to an existing colour scheme. To be honest most mecha colour schemes are pretty bland, and what make them stand out is the details.

Something you could do if you want to add a little extra pop is just include some minor variances of shading in the purple in a large, blocky camo pattern or digital pattern.

can any experienced painter here tell me if I can paint my gunpla without having to sand any part I want to paint? like, just primer said parts then paint over to primer?

also, I read somewhere that there are different types of paint and that some types don't react well to the type of plastic you use them on? something about enamels (or was it acrylics?) making ABS plastic brittle and breakable?

Any tips on what type of paint to use on what plastic and what not to, etc.?

You can definitely primer on unsanded parts, but you're going to have the best results with that if you use a lacquer primer

you will have the best results with a lacquer primer anyway though, tamiya fine primer cans are great if you aren't airbrushing

If you are handpainting, vallejo makes nice paints for handbrushing that won't eat any plastics. It's hard to be specific about that because it depends a lot on your process and what kit you are doing etc.

also I thought I might practice with spray-can painting first seeing as how I've never painted gunpla ever, and this is gonna be my first try.

Don't wanna screw anything up or ruin any kits by using the wrong type of paint on the wrong type of plastic so I thought I might ask you guys for tips. Trying to minimize risk so I minimize expenses too.

While we're on the subject of primers, specifically lacquer primers, Are the Mr. Surfacer series lacquer? I primarily plan on painting with lacquers, so I don't want to beef it.

Does someone know where I can buy dry decals for a perfect grade kit ?

I just had my first painting experience with gunpla two days ago and it went well. I used spray cans.

You need to disassemble the parts then put them on newspapers. After that, shake your can for a minute, then spray the paint on your pieces from a distance (20-30cm). Make sure you don't spray too much. Of course don't touch the pieces until they dried.

Spray cans are cool cause it takes only 20-25min for the paint to dry.

but like I said before, I don't want to accidentally fuck up my kit in the long run if I use the wrong type of paint on the wrong type of plastic and whatnot. I might end up trying to paint something that'll turn out good visually only for me to find out one day, that the structural integrity of the abs/polystyrene part's been compromised on the inside cause of the wrong type of paint I accidentally used without knowing.

Also won't spraying downward on the newspaper (I'm assuming that's how you did it), make the coating of the paint too thick cause of gravity or something?

I don't have enough skewers to do all the parts I want so I finish a batch, wait for it to dry and then gently put it on some chux cloth so I can get the other parts ready.

GundamMad would be your best bet if you can't get you hands on kits locally, I think they lump in the cost of their shipping from Japan to themselves into the overall price so you'd be paying relatively as much as it would be for you to ship it without customs catching you.

Also they tour with MCM Comic-Cons in the UK so you can get them in person too also P-Bandai stuff which surprised me

But I haven't used them myself so I can't really vouch for them I'm afraid.

Things send via SAL have a good chance of getting through customs without charges, even if over the £15 customs threshold.
EMS ALWAYS gets caught.
Although, even after paying customs, things are still cheaper than buying from a UK store.

FedEx is the most expensive option. Personally, and I have yet to order a delivery for my kits (got a revive Quebely and MG V2 in the warehouse), I'm probably going to go for the EMS option. I just like the assurance that comes with getting my things in a timely manner.

Any opinions on the RG GP01 FB, /m/en? Thinking of making next but I'm not sure how floppy it could be since I remember the MG was a huge floppy mess.

My RG GP01 is.... how do I say this - it's sturdy BUT it's a bitch to get on properly. Help! I just bought an MG Hyaku Shiki ver2.0! I tried shaving the nubs like usual using a sandpaper (low grit then finishing with high grit) but I kept shaving off the gold plate instead! Help! I don't like nub marks on my gunpla, looks like a peasant just built it!

is the part starting to look transparent/translucent/cloudy white? if yes, that's a sign to keep sanding the part even if the gold plating comes off. There's more gold plating underneath so keep sanding until it shows up again.

there's your problem. when sanding nubs on plated kits (gold/silver/red/blue/full plating), you're supposed to sand backwards. high > low grit.

Congrats man. Haven't built mine yet due to backlog but I got that same giddy feeling just looking at the contents. I was surprised by how purple the actual pieces were, since I always thought it was supposed to be more of an indigo hue. Not complaining though; guess it depends on the lighting.

It was my third kit ever built. I'm going back to my old kits to make them better than a simple snap build.

I'm also currently deconstructing an Astray Gold Frame Amatsu Mina Custom (second kit ever) so I can paint the red on and paint the inner frame gold. That will have to wait until summer though.

Decent, though the side-skirts can fall out very easily and (just like the RX-78-2) is only has fists and those "eh" RG hands (no actual weapon holding hands). Pose-wise its amazing, mono-eye moves as you move the head, and the feet are good BUT not the best Zaku II feet on the market.

Overall, it's very solid but from my experiences:

>It only comes with the articulated RG hands, no holding/trigger hands
