Quite a few did actually, since he was not an emotional wreck and was actually a level headed soldier with a mature opinion on the war rather than a psycho.

Really this just served as making it obvious that he wasn't gonna survive as the show wouldn't work the way Fukuda wanted if he was around too long. So instead he's just a glorified plot device for the most part.
