I always like it when they veer into the darker sides of conflict instead of just having the protag yell about understanding and such things. Thats why the episode of Turn A in the field hospital is the best one of that show too.

Showing Van deal with the physical ramifications of conflict along with the mental/spiritual is what made that ep so powerful.

Or maybe a lot of people rewatched it and saw that it doesn't hold up nearly as well, it came out during anime's impressionable age and during that time something like fucking Wing got held in high regard as a classic because people didn't know any better. Escaflowne has some pretty significant flaws that can bw determental to viewers, its not some kind of masterwork that everyone must acknowledge as a classic just a really good anime with some wear and tear. Yoko Kanno on the soundtrack is instant awesome. The choir theme is still my go-to for dramatic combat in table top games. And yeah, the animation, especially the mech fights, was top.
