Its music and voice work are certainly a step above average. Too bad it's obvious they dropped what should have been spoken lines for Theo (the scene where he realizes he's falling in love with Iris is pivotal in his character arc but its silent) and a few of Beatrix's scenes (like the one where she rallies the Werewolves and Axmann creeps on her) because of penny pinching.

It's mostly because the game is focused through the view point of Theo and she gets way more focus. In a lot of the side material, Irisdina isn't the angel that Theo builds her up to be (ie cutting deals with Axmann for information and a chance to kill Beatrix ).

Hardly. Characters like Axmann keep you on your toes, the MC is paranoid and possibly crazy, the main antagonist isn't only one of the most attractive women in the franchise, but puts most of its male villains to shame in how evil she is (and never swaps sides like many attractive villains do), the rebels aren't shining paragons of virtue, and there's tons of backstabbing and second guessing. SM plays with a ton of expectations and it's a thoroughly crazy throughout.

The translated portions of the novel make it clear that Iris did sell out her brother. In fact, Hannibal kinda implies to Mirai that it was her choice to go to the stasi. But then he turns it around to say that despite the contempt and scorn she got for getting Jurgen killed, she remained strong and has really made strides to redeem herself. The novel treats this as a good thing, and states that Iris is a better person for it.

Thinking about it, the original novel is very pro-Iris and very anti-Beatrix. Usually, when Iris flubs it's treated as well meaning, or she's a better person for acknowledging it and moving on, whereas Beato is usually portrayed as a monster whenever she acknowledges her fuck ups. Iris's flaws seem to get glossed over while Beato's flaws are hyped up.

I like how BiS totally turns the above on its head. Iris isn't so much of an angel; she's still a good person, but her flaws are more apparent. She can be very jealous, such as shitting all over Beatrix when she got a better grade than her rather than congratulating her like a good friend, and trying to guilt trip Jurgen into hanging out with her. Beatrix's positives are likewise played up.

Basically, the narration (mostly from Theo's perspective) is skewed in the LN, and you really can't trust it 100%. It makes things interesting and encourages people to form their own interpretation of motivations and events.

Why have all the TSF pilots we've met so far been officers (minus Marimo-chan who was a noncom)? Do enlisted mecha operators not exist?
It's not just eishi elitism either, I don't think we've been shown a single pilot of any other nation who wasn't at least a Lieutenant.

It's kinda easy to put Beatrix in a bad light. She's by far one of the worse people in the whole ML world, and neither she nor the story try to hide it. Beato's design is about incorporating conflicting elements. She's extremely attractive, but not in the conventional way that Iris is. My take on it is simple. Beatrix gave the West what they wanted. They can keep pretending the BETA threat is far off and just worry about evacuating. I mean, she'd probably arrange for some support of some kind but nobody west of them wants to drop everything and move to a total war footing. Iris' optimistic reunion of the two Germanys would end up pulling West Germany into the conflict. If the government isn't going to support such a thing, it becomes pretty clear why the two Germanys might become incredibly bitter about it especially because SM ends hopefully with the Berlin Wall being broken down from both sides and people reuniting.

Those are meant to be F-4Rs, Soviet mods of the Phantoms given to them by the US. East Germany probably operated a few early on, but by Schwarzesmarken they've moved on to domestically-produced MiG-21s, as have the Soviets.

Actually, I think it only confirms that we will see her in important scenes where Theo is not present.
