***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Its a brick in destroy mode with weak anlkes and the knees like to collapse back into unicorn mode at the drop of a hat.
>>
>>13608089
In all honesty it's a pretty bad kit; Because of the transformation gimmick it's fragile, has terrible articulation, and unless you cement it together has a tendency to straight up fall apart or collapse. You're probably going to break it one way or another.

I'd recommend you save it for later when you know what you're doing.
>>
>>13608089
My least favorite mg
>>
>>13608089
Try and snag an HG to get some experience before tackling the Unicorn MG. Trust me, you're gonna make a mistake or two. It's better to fuck up on some 10$ HG than the MG you're excited about. Also get an action base. It's very useful when dealing with brick kits.
>>
>>13607974
>dat dragreder at the back
anyone here has ever tried making a kamen rider custom with a hg or mg?
>>
>>13608089
It's not a bad kit. It is however, a disappointment to those MG fans who wanted a Unicorn able to transform into either mode at a whim, instead of being limited to one or the other like the HGs.

The problem is that the scale is still not large enough for this to work effectively. Great idea on paper, terrible in execution. In Unicorn mode, its stiff and inarticulate. In Destroy, its flimsy and a bit fragile.

The comprise made to both forms to allow for the transformation created what amounts to a mediocre model on both fronts, which is one of the reasons why there was such a push for a PG capable of doing the same, but fixing the majority of the problems that made the MG lackluster.

My advice on the MG its to decide which mode you prefer the gundam in, and leave it that way. Kinda defeats the point of having the transformation as a feature, but will save you alot of grief in the long run.

I went through two MG UC before I learned this lesson.
>>
>>13608259
wait, its still that bad? wasn't this supposed to be a improvement over the ver Ka that was the first unicorn MG release?

The OVA version is slightly better than the ver. Ka in terms of stability and flexibility. But it's more like putting a bandaid on a bullet wound than giving it sutures. Or a pile of shit from a vegetarian. It's not going to stink quite as much, but it's not going to smell like potpourri.

Oh, damn, beamknight. You picking up the MB Freedom or something else?
>>
>>13608339
>MB Freedom
the Exia Repair actually. After seeing lots of reviews, the MB Freedom came with plenty of quirks and I never liked the more recent SF that was just released

I was thinking about getting the vanilla Exia, but that shit is really, really expensive, while the Repair version is more unique and has a certain charm to it, not to mention I got it at its original retail price
I also plan to get the reissue of the Destiny when they announce it
>>
>>13608305

It lets it bend 90 degrees, not more than. The original only bent like 70.

>>13608278
It uses like 90 percent of the ver ka's runners. The only new parts are for the head and leg armor to mildy increase the knee bend and make the head ova accurate.
>>

>>13608089
MG Unicorn is actually really impressive considering its age (came out in 2007!) and its goal of being a fully transforming 1/100 Unicorn.

It's just that "really impressive" doesn't mean "good". The transformation is super unstable, the psychoframe doesn't really pop unless you put it under a black light, and the articulation is basically non-existent. The Beam Magnum barely holds itself together, the shield has problems sliding fully open at times, and the transforming v-fin can't really fully close.

MG Unicorn is so embarrassing now that even Bandai couldn't bring themselves to make Banshee Norn (itself a former web exclusive with magazine-freebie tier add-ons) general release.

I really hope that someday RE/100 release fixed versions of both forms. If you look at the RDs, you can see a lot of cool things they can do to get around the design's inherent lack of articulation. Those cool things definitely aren't possible with a transformation in place as well though.
>>
>>13608379
Incidentally, since you're new at this, you should probably note that MG Unicorn is very indicative of all vKas: a really ambitious idea that didn't quite work out, but is still at least really cool to build.
>>
>>13608389
Okay, thanks anon, so the best I can do is let it be at its Unicorn Mode right?
>>
>>13608389
>Nu's
>Sazabi
>Didn't work out
M8 the Sazabi is the best MG to have come out in recent times, and the Hi-Nu/Nu aren't anything to scoff at either.
>>
>>13608379
I doubt that it will ever be an RE100. That line is for releases that are too financially risky for an mg release (through being too niche, to expensive to produce due to something like size, and similar factors).

Unicorn sells way too well as is. If anything there's a better chance of a 2.0 in 10 years than a RE release.

The PG fixed pretty much all the issues of the mg anyways if you're willing to shell out for it.
>>
>>13608366
That's cool, and I agree with the R1 having that worn-down fallen hero charm that makes it look badass in comparison to the vanilla Exia. Can't wait to see some pictures, my man.
>>
>>13608379

>they will waste a RE/100 slot to remake an MG that sold extremely well
>an expensive admission that a popular product was flawed

In what universe does this make any sense to you
>>
>>13608404
MG Nu vKa is renowned for being the first, and worst, use of the Emotion Manipulators. The poor thing can't even hold its beam rifle! It also has a really cool approach to the funnel rack that doesn't work in practice at all, and Invoke Mode is neat but ultimately only barely more stable than Destroy Mode.

MG Sazabi vKa learned a lot of stuff from Nu vKa, so it at least can hold its weapons as intended. Unfortunately that's about the most you can say about it since by design the Sazabi's weapons are super bulky and almost impossible to work with barring very specific poses. The fold-out thrusters are super cool looking but also a giant pain to set-up, and the poor thing had to sacrifice having an actual cockpit for a LED that most people probably don't even use.

MG Hi-Nu vKa is probably the overall best of the lot (and it ought to be, being the least ambitious), but then you throw in the HWS and ahaha. Man.

(The actual best MG to come out in recent times is RX-78-02. DX is probably second.)
>>
>>13608404
Nu was hailed as pretty much the best and golden child of the mg line when it came out despite a flaw or two. They crammed a ton into it, including new things at the time.

>LED slot
>Sonic welded articulated hands
>PS frame
>Stand
>Support arms for the funnels
>Alternate display form
>Two tone coloring like on RG
>Waterslide decals instead of shitty stickers or dry transfers
>Lots of moving parts and part separation on everything

It was a fantastic release. The only complaints I ever saw were that the funnels liked to fall off and the hands were a bit fragile.
>>
>>13608419
The universe where I get a cool toy.

Did "really hope" somehow become "I am absolutely sure this will happen due to a mountain of factual data" at some point?
>>
>>13608428
>and Invoke Mode is neat but ultimately only barely more stable than Destroy Mode.

It's a hell of a lot more stable. I've never seen any complaints about it causing instability at all or experianced any myself.
>>
>>13608404
>>13608428

did you guys just forget that Sinanju was originally a Ver. Ka?
>>
>>13608443
It's mostly just the breast portions and the forearms. But yeah, you're right, saying it's barely more stable than Destroy Mode is being extremely uncharitable.
>>
>>13608428
I have no idea what you're talking about with the Nu ver Ka's hands; the grip is fine when you use the included peg and the only problem is that the wrist is kind of limp (easily fixed with super glue or rod). The funnels are a pain in the ass though but I prefer to have them deployed.

As for the Sazabi, the cockpit was probably never an option considering the fact that scale would never work with it being in the head. In all the animations that include MSs with psychoframes, the cockpits are always enormous. This incidently does not translate well into 1/100 scale.

>cockpit
>>
>>13608463
It's kind of awkward saying this since I'm personally a huge proponent of "if the kit has an issue, just fix it yourself", but the very fact that Nu vKa's wrists are so weak that you have to fix them at all is a mark against the kit. Out of the box, it absolutely can't hold up its rifle straight at all.

At the very least Bandai learned from it and made all future versions of the Emotion Manipulators much more rigid.

Also MG Sazabi vKa literally has the cockpit in the head already, it just doesn't open up.

Also, how good do perfect grades look without paint on them? I'm guessing even better than a MG, right? I'd like to get into painting models someday, but now's not the right time, and this certainly isn't the right model to start with.

Please don't do something you will regret then come back here posses at us or the model when it was your fault. Get a damn HG or two at least.

Not that anon, but what sort of modeling experience do you have? While Bandai kits are among the easiest and most beginner friendly of kits in existence, an MG, much less the Unicorn, is not a particularly good place to start. The Unicorn MG in particular is a bit wonky and more fragile than most contemporary MGs due to its transformation gimmick.

As the guide suggests, an HG, perhaps of a kit you like (the Unicorn HGs are decent), is a much better starting point. You don't want to end up ruining your favorite kit due to a lack of skill.

I looked at real touch markers, but they seem kind of expensive and for most of the kits I want to get it doesn't look like the colors would match and it would just leave a discolored spot instead of a white spot. I suck at painting but I'm not opposed to it if it makes things look better.

>Also, what's the best way to hide the white marks from where you cut the plastic off?
Cut the nubs off higher from the piece and sand/file them down carefully.

Easier if you have better quality nippers.

the white marks indicate stressed plastic caused when cutting the nubs. the closer to the piece you make your initial cut,the harsher the stress marks might be.

I'd suggest panel washing for panel lines, but for a first attempt it looks doable. Lacquer spray may eat away at certain plastics (particularly the red PS Bandai used for a couple of kits between 2004 and, oh, 2012-ish?), so you may want to use acrylic.

>hide the white marks
When removing pieces from the plate, first snip off a bit away from the piece, taking a piece of the gate with it. Then make a second cut with nippers flush to the piece. This greatly reduces stress marks.

Then go over the residual nub very carefully with a hobby knife. If you're good, that will be the end of that and no sanding will be required. If the nub is very flat but additional sanding will discolor the area, then go over the nub with a slightly wet (water is fine) fingernail. It really works.

It's based off the PG Strike Frame, so it's one of the best PGs to date.

I don't know about its articulation being worse than the RG's, but its balance should shit all over it at the very least. That thing can do some silly poses.

There are third party add-ons too if you want a PG Red Frame Custom or a metal katana.

The best PG remains the Strike to this day. 11 years of supremacy and counting!

Still, PG 00R and SF are both actually pretty great. Or rather, PG 00 and SF without its dragoons are really great. Slapping on the backpacks ruins everything because it turns out giant backpacks kill balance!

But they are MGs without the back packs
Red frame is the perfect grade with the biggest part count going to it
It feels more complete with the moving panels and the pistons, even more gimmicks going on the armor than the strike but there would be a design prefference
The strike has more articulation because of the lack of more intricate armor and moving parts which sounds retarded knowing that they both share inner frame

Is the MG DX any good?
Also how are the Victory Gundam kits?
>>
>>13611467
Thx4headsup anon. Big ups
>>
>>13612093
MG DX is absolutely incredible. The redesign fixes a lot of the issues the DX had, there's this neat thing going on with the waist that helps the kit stand up straight even with its massive backpack, and there's all sorts of gimmicks possible. It's even compatible with the old 1/100 DX's accessories.

Victory, on the other hand, is a wash. There has never been a truly good Late UC model kit, and there likely never will since. HG V/V' is cheap but hilariously off-model, MG V is the most fragile thing, and MG V' just makes it worse.

MG V2 is looking nice, but it's probably going to be just as fragile. And the inevitable MG V2AB is just gonna be a clusterfuck.

If you like the designs then there's no reason not to get them, but if you're looking for a quality kit than look elsewhere.
>>
>>13612201
Oh and HG V2 is nice (if a little chunky), but you better get used to its torso separating from its legs.

HG V2AB is detailing hell.
>>
>>13612093
MG DX is your pretty standard fare MG, reuses the same frame as the X, which is good in it's own right. All the gimmicks you'd expect from the DX, that is to say, tons of solar panels.

Put another way, it's about as good, engineering wise, as the more recent Wing MGs.

The MG Victory... Is a mess. I know the term grenade gets thrown around a lot here (yes, pun intended), but it fits.

Can't speak for the V2 but supposedly they fixed many of the issues that plagued the original.

Oh but if you don't care about playing with your kits, MG V Dash is a very impressive display piece because it can hold a silly amount of accessories at once. Bandai kept all the hardpoints, so if you want to you can absolutely put everything on at once and put the Full Armor Unicorn to shame.

I think at max you can put the missile pods on the legs, the VSBRs on the side skirts, the beam rifles and the disposable bazookas on the Overhang Cannons, the smartgun and the gatling on the arm hardpoints, and still have the hands open to hold the javelin.

It looks hilariously awesome.

My team ended up drafting a Gogg, Rozen Zulu and Gabthley for a gunpla contest. We've decided to go with a monster-themed team. The Gogg is going to be a kraken, the Gabthley is a dragon and for the Rozen Zulu, right now we're thinking werewolf, but if anybody has better ideas on that one let me know.

For the Gogg, what can I use as tentacles? Is there some kind of concoction of wire and other bits I could use to make them? I'm planning go make a shell of pla-plates to cover most of the Gogg's back with tentacles coming out.

The Beam Magnum barely holds itself together, the shield has problems sliding fully open at times, and the transforming v-fin can't really fully close.

Literally none of that is true.

The only real problem is the Banshee Norn and his giant shield.

Nothing else is floppy.

Question for you guys, do you listen to music while you're building your gunpla, if so, what is it?

I personally listen to CCA's, UC's, and Eva 3.33's soundtracks mixed with whatever band I'm digging that day, which can normally rotate between Dream Theater, Foo Fighters, Megadeth and a few others.

Either keep them in a drawer if you have room or use ziplock bags. A large size bag can hold quite a few parts. That way they won't be in the boxes of a kit forcing you to move your backlog around.

It's better to invest in nippers since they'll get the job done much longer. If you can budget for Tamiya ones that are over 40 then I'd strongly recommend that, since they're better long term.
>>
>>13614519
Know the feeling. You don't want to risk a loss due to inexperience. Just take a deep breath, take it slow, do it right.

Practice on spoons, use clips and sticks even if you can't afford an airbrush, you can still do basic paint jobs with rattle cans, just have to get the method down. Move up to a cheap, random HG, hone the skills you have learned for yourself. Build some confidence, and you will get there.

Varies from person to person, but you could probably spend less than a month and be ready to make your vision.

All you need is willpower
>>
>>13614626
Don't fall for the nipper shills, invest in a file set and sandpaper and you're set for your gunpla needs. Just use the cuticle to cut it off from the sprue and use the files and sandpaper for nub removal.
