Ok, would Gundam/Mobile Suits be more realistic if they were Landmate sized?
>>
They would be homosexual and look retarded. Shirow's landmates don't have heads or the same really humanoid shape as most mobile suits so that makes them look cool
>>
That's lame.

Now, it's important to remember that MS were originally intended to be just that, suits. Still, I like them better as they are now.

You hit at a thing that really bothers me. Smaller size mechs and power armors don't work.

1. You need to take into consideration human body structure. Human body will have problems making full range of movements with more mass you around it. Not to mention metal is rigid and flexible only around the joints. Medieval plate armor doesn't allow you to put palm of your hand on your chest. And that thing is few milimeters thick. Now think about mech suit or power armor that have huge mass that is needed to allow human body mass, power armor parts and armor plating on top of all that.
Every human sized power suit made to this day, that I'm aware off, has that problem.

2. You need to take into consideration that power armors and mechs with the ability to have a pilot inside them they also need to have enough room for power core/reactor/engine and enough room for mechanical parts/frame etc.

Because of that bigger mechs work in my mind. You can fill a small chest cavity or mech's head unit with pilot seat.

Uh...

>>13607373

you really are baiting for a reply. Aren't you?

First of all that is not power ARMOR or SUIT. now try putting armor around it that is thick enough to stop 9mm bullets and yet thin enough and close enough to the body so it doesn't prevent body movement or high manual dexterity.

Landmates will work, because their proportions are far from "human". If you want to use gundam-styled suits, you better change the proportions too. Even more then on your pic.

>>13607329
1) Ever heard about indirect and exaggerated control? I mean, master arm bends 40 degrees, while slave arm moves 80 degrees in response? Agility isn`t a problem you face in power armor.
2) The smaller the mecha, the lower power output you need to run it. Backpack gas-turbine generator works just fine.

take this soft armor and apply it to the frame.

titanium alloy shell covering up to, but at or past the point of hindering movement. titanium shell rated to stop shrapnel and pistol rounds.

ceramic ablative armor plates on top of everything. with articulated parts to cover the joints.

the only reason for the flaws you mentioned is poor design. or the fact that some of those issues are unimportant. I mean, midieval armor is designed to keep the knight alive, not play patty-cake.

Likewise, by building the mech joints on the same pivot points as the human's joint, and then covering it with sliding armor plates, you can get better mobility. Actually, the Landmate designs get around this by not even putting the human "in" the mech. he is essentially sitting in the mech's lap. the machine's "spinal column" is on the front, protecting the pilot. the back of the mech flexes and twists, like a human belly. and since bullets usually come at the front, the back of the mech can be more flexible and vulnerable.

dammit... I wish I had a digital copy of Appleseed, so I could upload all the notes from the back of the book. it is pure genius and makes me cry whenever I see the porn garbage Shirow cranks out, now

Mecha mash ups?
Nah.
That was a request from one of the drawthreads I think.
You want a Zaku Pony?
Wait, don't wanna get b& again.

Here's an Unfinished WIP from the Russian themed Gundam OC story threads we had for a few weeks from around the same time.
In relation to thread topic, some argued for for smaller mech sizes for the story fro realis, sake, but we ended up with Victory sized MSs anyway.

Mecha traditions dictate Giant Robots, it's just more fun.

this is what I am talking about, where the pilot is in a super-armored sleeve on the front of the robot, all the machine's mechanics are built around the mobility of the pilot, included double-jointed knees. Also, slight movements of the pilot are scaled to the mech's shadowing. this way the pilot doesn't need to reach his own butt to make the robot scratch its ass

and this is how you get 6 inch thick armor on a teeny robot. you put all the rigid parts on the front, and the flexible machinery on the back.

Humans have muscles on every surface of our limbs because we use a push/pull system. Machines, however, can use the same machinery to push out a limb AND pull it in. that way you can just build a fucking wall of armor and put the moving parts on the other side
>>
I don't get Shirow's obsession with the landmate design.

in most of his works, cybernetics are a mundane thing. So why would the pilot of a mech need to move his arms and legs? they should just hook their mind into the mech's control system. Then curl up in a ball inside the chest. then everything is done by thought. the pilot's body controls and senses are done through the mech instead of his own body.
>>
>>13611647
>they should just hook their mind into the mech's control system.
found the retard
>>
>>13611655
think about Motoko Kusanagi and other GitS full body cyborgs.

They are basically already just brains piloting mechs. So why can't anyone with a cyberbrain plug into a mecha and put their body to sleep. While their mind commands the mech directly?
>>
>>13611672
Besides the earthquake, questions like this is probably why he stopped Appleseed and concentrated on GitS...

Appleseed is pre cyberpunk old timey gundam/Starshiptroopers/Hillstreet Blues (yes the US TV show, he was a big fan), while GitS is 90's "virtual reality" SF looking towards our current networked cyberspace rather then Post Apocalyptic war stories.
>>
>>13611672

because not everything he draws is in the same setting?

Note, that landmates are present in GitS. As for a reason. Well, backup failsafe control is one thing. That`s a military vehicle and it should be able to operate without direct connection. Probably that`s not a very good example, but it`s like "Armata", while being camera-networked with LCDs, have a backup optical sights.
