Probably Yuuya level. Everything I read up on the guy points to him being an amazing pilot, maybe even being the best in SM. Consider that he was the top student at the Air Academy and was picked to represent the DDR in the TSF trials.

The story also points out that he can actually pilot the F-4R without the piloting assist, and benefits greatly from the improved sensitivity (even if it's less stable). He's good enough where the Soviets take his suggestion on how to improve TSFs into consideration. He helped develop and implement anti-laser tactics. He's a pretty sharp guy (is it any wonder Beatrix was so enamored with him.)

This makes me want to write a scenario where Jürgen survives the stasi's purge by faking his death.

The dissidents not caught in the stasi's net decide that it's too dangerous for him to stay in East Germany and offer to smuggle him to the West with Katia. Jürgen obviously refuses at first; Beatrix dropped off the radar when the purge happened and he needs to find out if she's still alive. The rebels assure him that if she turns up, they'll be sure to get her to the West too. Seeing no other choice, Jürgen eventually relents. Before he leaves, the rebels ask him if he wants Iris to know if he's still alive. Jürgen's pretty upset at Iris for the whole situation and tells them he doesn't want anything to do with her anymore. It'd be better if he stayed dead to her because she's dead to him.

Jürgen spends the next few years raising Katia. The day goes on, and his hopes of seeing Beatrix dwindle. The rebels tell him that everything points to her being dead. Despite his despair, he attempts to do his best for Katia.

Jürgen never had the heart to tell Katia of what happened to her family, merely alluding to their fate. Because of this, Katia naively held onto the hope that maybe someone survived the Night of Moonlight.

When the events of SM kick-off, Jürgen follows Katia to the east (nobody recognizes him because he's grown out a beard that looks absolutely terrible on him), where he must deal with his estranged sister, his not quite dead but very crazy former lover, and all the messy politics in between.

If only I had more info to feed this plot bunny.

If you did not read the short stories in Requiem, you would not know why Lise is so loyal to Beatrix, and Gretel reacting to finding out Martin is alive would be completely loss on you. It's even worse because Beatrix's and Irisdina's conflict form the heart of the story. Theo isn't really the main character in my eyes, he's just a secondary character who gets caught in between the two. It just so happens he's the main view point character too (much like Ahab and Moby Dick are the MCs of their story and not the narrator). It's why Theo resolving the conflict instead of either of those two feels so unsatisfactory.

I remember reading some Chinese scans and Beatrix doesn't really seem that into the more insane torture techniques, at least early on. Like before the rebellion, she preferred to use standard interrogation techniques like sleep deprivation, good cop/bad cop, and cutting deals. The worse she did was waterboarding. As much as I want to like Irisdina, Beatrix is just so much more charismatic than her. It's the voice actors, specifically Yukarin, really. Beatrix just has this natural entrancing cadence, an elegant beauty to her even as she belittles and intimidates. I'd follow that woman into hell and back. As I'm closer to Beatrix than anyone else in the cast in terms of way of thinking, I would say Beatrix and Jürgen.

Jürgen clearly made mistakes ( Thinking everybody will agree with him on everything because surely everyone have the same global vision as him, led him where he *is* now ), and was as idealist and naive as his sister in his own way, which, in Alternative world is never a good thing.

Actually that's why I like Beatrix so much, she have basically Jürgen's mind of caring about Humanity safety above all else but totally adapted herself to the cruel world she is living in, where humans in power are as selfish as ever even with the BETA invading. It led her to end being cruel if needed to, but remember that she wanted to gain power into the Stasi ranks, so the rebels were a little price to pay to be able to change things on a larger scale ( Though this will be entirely speculations, she could have pressed Europe to care more about the Defense Line just by saying she would withdraw her troops if it wasn't the case, letting the UE without a defensive line at the mercy of the BETA. The type of threatening she became expert in, and always leads to facts instead of words ).

If they cut out the subplots and focus only on Theo, Iris, Beatrix, Katia, and Lise, then it's entirely feasible. Still, it sucks that we'll be getting a truncated story. Well, Age got really Jewish with SM and cut out most of the really important character bits to sell short stories (Light Novel DLC basically). Beato is a complete sociopath (rather than the broken tragic person she is), Gretel is a total bitch (and why the fuck is she crying about this Martin Karel), Lise is just insane (why the hell is she so loyal to Beato), and why is Annette so broken up over Inghilde (Annete dragged her childhood BFF into the military even though she was unsuited for it so feels responsible for her death). Even Sylwia's backstory with the betrayals, the suicidal thoughts, and the rape is in a shortstory outside of the actual LN.

It's terrible. It really ends up hurting the characters and story. Reading SM standalone leaves you clueless and hating characters who are actually pretty likable if you knew their backgrounds.

They do it to both the LN and VN. You basically need to read Requiem, BiS, and TSFiA to get the full story. It totally flips the perspective around and makes some characters less sympathetic (Iris) and others more (Beatrix).

Schwarzesmarken still looks like a well-managed project compared to TE.

If I recall correctly:

I doubt he's specifically after any of the characters in TE. Assuming Theo is the Master and assuming that he's really a crazed Christian who buys into Allegiance's whole schlock about the BETA being God's second coming of the Great Flood, instead of stringing them along like Major Christopher to poor naive Valentine, he would have more interest in going after the espers, made by humans "playing God", than some random schmuck from another country.

And if he's just a guy who has some great speeches, then the plan would also have ended up such that if Major Christopher bailed in the face of the incoming American revenge train and left the RLF to rot at the end, every other nations' TSF would have gotten rekt while East Germany still gets their Fulcrums back at the end of it. Or at least, that would have been the plan had Yuuya and co. not made it out of the initial slaughter by the infiltrated security teams.

Sandek's the one who ordered Yui's assassination after learning that his two top espers give their best bang for buck when having me-time with Yuuya and doesn't want anyone to disrupt that in the long run.

... well, that would probably be just as bad or worse as ditching it halfway for super sekrit TSF project, especially if the story condition was "super hive battle as finale", but you get what I mean.

I actually think Teito Moyu was the best thing to happen to the TE line. It actually gave Yui a reason to be downright uptight about everything she does in TE itself, and added the first perspective of the 1998 invasion of Japan. Before that, Yui was just "well, I guess she's Guard, they're super anal by default".

More importantly, Schwarzemarken has actual choices. I think that's a fair improvement over the painfully-linear TE, since IMO, the lowest denominator in any VN is to not have choices. At that point it's just two steps and good voice-acting away from being an e-book and at the prices TE retailed for, an e-book of the TE LNs would have been a far better choice.

... Did Kooki even finish his LN adaptation of TE? Last I heard Vol. 6 was released detailing the RLF attack, and that was it.

Beatrix is a difficult character. Her voice actress would require a great deal of range so they had to go with more of an A-lister.

Actually, having Yukarin voice Beatrix presents another problem other than costs. She's too damn good.

It was obvious in the Iris vs Beato confrontation in chapter 3. Beatrix is too charismatic, too interesting. You want to follow her. She makes Irisdina look boring and artificial, which is a problem because in the book, Iris is as, if not more, charismatic than Beatrix.

Between this and BiS, it's almost like Kouki wants to destroy Iris's number one spot. Not much of a surprise considering Beatrix is his favorite Schwanken.

That's cause she kinda isn't. Beato cares for her men and uses her charisma and leadership ability to bind them together, much like Iris. Like the 666, the Wearwolves are a tight nit bunch who'd follow their leader into the maws of a BETA Hive itself without any second guesses (well, most of them). Axmann, in contrast uses fear and blackmail to keep his subordinates in line (which is why they all hate him).

Also, Yukarin's command tone is great (at least the brief tidbit we got of it), and her intimidation tone sound bloodthirsty:

True. Having females in your army at this point in time is also valuable. Not just to keep the men happy (and have the females also weed out any potential plans to subvert the status quo by reporting any pillow talk back), but because many of the men are already on the front lines either fighting BETA or fighting other humans.

Not to mention, a force of females gives the illusion that the leader is a real alpha (when it's something of the contrary), and are better adept and managing things between Axemann and the lower subordinates.

Nah, Axmann just liked to break people. He often times didn't have much of an end goal in his interrogations beyond torture. To Axmann, the more pure something is, the more he wanted to tear it down and drag it through the mud. That's what he did to Lise, that's what he wanted to do to Katia, and that's probably what he did to Beatrix and countless others. The book even establishes that he has a bunch of "swallows", or stasi sex slaves he broke (many of them still children) running around reporting information back to him. On top of everything else, he has a very me-centric personality, no loyalty at all to anybody. "Live for yourself" he'd say. Most of the other stasi who had to work with him, like Beatrix, absolutely hated him. That the rebels would deal with such a man probably only reinforced that they were scum in Beatrix's mind.
