Good animation, pretty okay but underused mechs and waifushit is pretty much everything it has going for it.

It was surprisingly bad. Really great mecha designs and mecha action, but not nearly enough. Boring and lame characters, boring and lame story, some cool stuff with an evil computer... Sadly, you can use your time a lot better. But definitely watch the first episode to see the awesome gattai sequence, which is one of the most epic ever.

It's shit. Like, it's not as bad as E7AO because it'snot killing a franchise, but it's bad. The series is what you get if someone combined Nichijou, AnoHana, Raideen, and Bokurano in a blender. It's basically a mecha series that tries to be a slice of life while also being about the saving the Earth from being destroyed by evil space aliens who get an episode or three of character development before fucking off. Nothing that happens in any episode matters until the very end, very little is explained, and most of the explanations are bullshit. It's just really bad.

Man this upset me the most. That sequence at the end would've been cool if they hadn't already established the Earth Engine was made of paper.

The show was a waste of potential, which I think is worse than if it was just outright bad. Plot points are brought up that don't matter and aren't even finished.

The main issue of Captain Earth is that it is a two cour show with only enough plot for 1 cour. If they squeeze everything into 13 episodes it might have been an acceptable anime. 26 episodes is to long for what little story it had.

It's one of those things that you know could have been really great, but just wasn't.

It's a Bones series, so it has a lot of potential, but it ultimately meanders along without a clear direction in mind until the final couple of episodes where everything comes crashing together. It also has a bad habit of throwing a lot of flowery terminology at you that won't make any sense at the time which may leave you lost.

It really doesn't. By the final stretch the show is actively wasting your time with a pointless conflict and episodes that just rehash character growth that we've already seen. Some of the action turns out to be pretty fun, but there's no proper sense of direction and the side character developments feel empty by the end. Also, the stock footage robot introduction gets old really fast (even though its not used every episode), where Star Driver's actually held up for the whole season. Some of the character interactions are pretty good though, but they're sort of sparse since the mess of a plot is too focused on pointless villain vignettes that by the end feel more like wasted time than a real connection to the antagonists.

The main girl in the final episode is great though.

That show had battles that was composed 70% of stock footage with the same damn outcome every fucking time, and about few episodes towards the end BONES actually remembered that they forgot its own plot leading to an inconclusive and rushed finale. CE's biggest sin is just being fucking boring while SD was just plain shit and I think its hysterical how the latter gets off easy while CE is hated when they're the same fucking shit.

A lot of people didn't like it, a few (myself included) really did. I enjoyed the web of character interactions, mech design, and it had some nice shots and directing (not just the fight scenes). Salty Dog was easily the weakest part, and had the show focused on other stuff and dropped them it would have been better.

Salty Dog really was the weakest party. They were even introduced early on and then did jack all until Daichi's foster parent showed up and then they seemingly vanished for the most part. Bones really needs help with pacing and creative control it seems.

The problem I think is that the show's introduction and themes centered around the conflicts between the different groups of kids (the Planetary Gears and MSK) as well as Puck. They went off message and really off track with the shit about Salty Dog. Though from Star Driver I think it's clear the generations relations/differences between youth and adults is something Igarashi and Enokido wants to tackle however doing it so late in Captain Earth in my opinion only sidetracked the main themes/narrative of the show.

Salty Dog was stupid because after they realized "Daichi is the only one who can fight them" and "We'll all literally die if he fails" they kept vaguely trying to fuck with him for no real reason. They had a full cast of interesting villains, and they should have been used more instead of Salty Dog.

Captain Earth was very nearly a good show, but didn't stick the landing.

The mech design is great. The characters are (mostly) great. The general setup is solid, and even Salty Dog wasn't bad at the start. There is a believable split between the people who thing that defeating the aliens is possible, and the people who think that the best we can do is buy time and try and minimize the damage when we eventually lose.

The problem was that the show desperately needed an editor. There was plenty of foreshadowing given early on about who the true big bad of the show was going to be, but then they completely fucked up making that work. He just sort of shows up already running godmode.exe in the last two episodes and makes the aliens totally irrelevant in their own show, with no satisfying explanation for how we got to this point.

The aliens also had a whole subplot obviously set up about splitting on whether or not destroying Earth was even something they wanted to do anymore, which got no payoff because the show got hijacked away from them.

All of this basically comes down tot he villain side of the pl be grossly mishandled and needing way more screentime and development than they got. Which is especially bad since there are easily 3 episodes that could have been cut and re-written into something useful because they were a waste of time.

It wouldn't take very much work to turn Captain Earth into a solid 8/10 show. But they fucked it up. Now its a 5/10, not great, but with enough really good parts in it that I cannot hate it completely. Even if, as a whole, it failed.
