IMO that part in Macross 7 was pretty realistic. The problems in Max and Milia's marriage started when she became mayor, which meant that the tension between the civilian administration and the military that was always present entered their household as well. It's certainly very true that diverging or incompatible career paths can break even sturdy relationships.
