Firstly, assure that such a thing is practical. Sovereign rule only works if the resulting power has sufficient sustainable leverage, whether in economic output, or some other facet of "legitimacy". In UC pre-OYW Zeonic Republic had very little, though after a few colony drops the needs of the Federation shifted agricultural output to space and thereby created necessary leverage (which never came to pass at any rate).

More to the point: make sure independence is actually a useful proposition: no one likes taxes and most people think of their tribe as being superior to dirty, dirty foreigners, but at the end of the day, if you're dependent on said foreigner for basic survival, independence is daft.

This, The Republic of Zeon was all fine and dandy under the federation. Hell, the entire principle of colonial independence was actually in the Federation Charter. It would have been better to achieve independence through diplomatic and economic means rather than start shooting.

There was only one colony drop in the OYW. Granted it broke into three pieces, but New England isn't exactly a major food producer. Not to mention the fact that this would not give the Republic of Zeon any leverage even if it were true, because all the remaining Sides except for Zeon were still aligned with earth.

What the war was actually about was who was going to be in charge of the government. In 0078, 9 of the 11 billion humans lived in space colonies, ruled over by governments appointed by the nations of earth. Even though the colonies originally belonged to the earth, the earth's population was now 1/5 the size of the colonies and many colonists believed the majority in the colonies should have dominion over the minority on earth. Degwin "Space Potato" Zabi sought to put himself at the forefront of this new spacenoid government by getting the other Sides to quit the EF and form a new government of the Sides, by the Sides, and for the Sides. Unfortunately for him, the only other Side willing to drop out was Side 6. And while Side 6 was willing to ally with Zeon after Zeon's Zaku forces pushed the EF re-occupation forces out, they weren't really on board with the Zabi family's radicalism. Zeon sneak-attacked the Sides who'd stated they would oppose Zeon's "war for independence" but left Side 6 alone because 6 was the only Side that wasn't directly opposing them.
Food production never had anything to do with anything. With only two billion people on earth, food supplies were fine.

It is clear that in the original 70's Zion were presented by evil Empire - hence the total genocide and other crimes, now will proceed from the interests of the Duchy, and not the writers...

1)adhering to ideas of independence, with himself as leader, of course, all possible ways to promote cultural isolation of the colonies from the mother country

2) to begin, concentrate in the colonies the most advanced scientific and technical production and to encourage the development of promising research and development

3) ensure the presence of numerous passenger-transport and merchant fleet and to maximize the space infrastructure of the colonies

4) to prepare, on the basis of police forces, paramilitary corps of Marines; to alter, due to the modular design, space transport vehicles into combat; and on the basis of building capsules to make a simple space fighters

5) to declare political independence, already possessing economic and military independence

6) to enlist the support of large parts of the colonists, carrying out intelligence work informally in joint ventures and trite setting an example of what you can live without Federation (In the original, the Duchy, under the embargo, has successfully traded with the colonies and the Moon, so that the above describes the result of a more active version of this policy)

7) to reorganize the fleet and army under the use of newly-invented MS (ideally, "Nemo" and "Alexandria-class")

The key was a series of local governmental coups, taking one Side at a time. By far, the biggest problem that the space colonies actually had was the fact that they were not able to pick their own governmental figures, being ruled by feddie figureheads.

Replace those figureheads with actual spacenoid officials and... congrats! You won! Everything after that is a matter of trade and commerce between yourself and the other sides/Earth itself. You have everything you actually need, being recognized as a separate governmental body free from earth is neither wise nor necessary for the day to day life of the people on your Side.

Reform is needed, possibly by force if the system is rigged against you. But seeking true independence is overkill unless the Federation themselves forces the issue by threatening to take their ball and go home.

Easy, first bribe the top officers of the Federation for independance. Their first move after accepting the bribe will be to attempt to initiate war by commiting an atrocity against their own people and frame it as a Zeon attack to gain sympathy from the general public. To counter that we simply have to bribe one general to tell us where they are planning to carry out their attack (secretly film him saying this) then arrest him. Now all you need to do is send this video to worldwide Turn A style and the world is united against the Federation government (we will put puppet leaders of course) and we have independence without a single life lost.
