Sadly, one of the causes for that wasn't the plot. It was the fact that explosions cost significantly less to animate than actual fight scenes.

I wouldn't be surprised if the writers put the main characters in the grunt units so that they could get the green light to actually show the grunts in action.

Wing was inconsistent with everything. Not just named characters. There are times when grunt Leos are shot up by Virgos and aren't destroyed. Leos aren't as cardboard as people say. There are scenes like that but 90% of the time they are fighting Gundams which have much stronger weapons than them because Gundanium weapons are stronger than non Gundanium weapons. Leos can take tons of blows from Aries and other Leos.

Except it doesn't because the only reason Amuro survived was solely due to how advanced the Gundam was throwing Char off guard. 079 constantly brought up Amuro purely relying on the Gundam's capabilities too much to carry him through battle. Amuro's fight with Ral was when he finally learned the hard way he couldn't keep doing that anymore or else it'd quickly result in him being killed.
