Is Mobile Suit Gundam's animation really that bad for it's time? I ask because I just read this:

> Initially on a shoestring budget to begin with, Mobile Suit Gundam's mid-season cancellation meant its quality noticeably suffered. Nobody can say it better than the creators themselves, during a July 2010 interview to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Gundam—which has been translated and preserved as the extra content on this Blu-Ray set. “The backgrounds were truly awful,” Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino bluntly recalls. “We had to use fewer and fewer cells each episode. While we were doing the work, even I thought it was horrible,” he said. Tomino noted that every episode was completed on schedule, but at what cost?

Mobile Suit Gundam's poor quality would continue to haunt its creators. “While we were watching the screening [for the movie version] we noticed that there seemed to be something regrettable in every episode,” said character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. While Yasuhiko asserts that he “is still discovering profound new meaning” in the Gundam story, the original art is “half-hearted and obsolete.”

I didn't think it was that bad at all.
Haven't watched it yet? Stop waffling and get to it.

Watch the Gundam piece from the last Japan Animator Expo(in the first season of three), it shows the original key frames side-by-side with the end product. The key animation is just beautiful, what the animation grunts they hired to do the in-betweens did with it was not pretty.
>>
>>13516669
>I didn't think it was that bad at all.
Neither did I, to be honest. It had this dynamic feeling of fluidity to it that you don't get with any of the other Gundam shows, which I really liked.
>>
Compare it to Gatchaman's animation.
>>
>>13516644
For me, it's not that bad. Granted, I was raised on Hanna Barbera cartoons.

But the animation isn't the real reason to watch MSG, the story is the real draw (no pun intended). If you want to watch pretty, flashy animation, you'll be disappointed. If you want a compelling story, though, MSG is very hard to beat. It was very far from being my first anime but is nonetheless one of my very favorite shows of all time, quirky toyetic G-Armor, QUALITY moments, 70's disco music, and all.

I seriously never noticed most of the QUALITY until it was pointed out to me, the show's excellent direction and fight choreography does wonders to hide the poor animation.

that was sadly pretty jerky
the animation on the other ms seems fine.because theyre not trying to do anything too fancy with it

>>
>>13516644
It has some very embarassing moments, but it has also scene that are still among the best directed. One example that comes to mind is Char and Sayla's meeting again at Jaburo, with Char standing over her. Or the Z'Gok VS GM fight. Or Lalah's first appearance.
It looks bad, but the important moments look very beautiful and memorable thanks to Tomino's direction and Yas' skills.
>>
>>13516644
Still better animation than IBO
>>
>>13516644
Nah 0079 has some of the best animation of all time, you just don't get it!
>>
>>13516644
It was maybe a few years behind in 70s animation, but it wasn't absolutely horrible. If you can stand watching 70s animation, most of Gundam's bad animation won't even be as noticeable and will probably be brushed to the side, with a few exceptions - like the Beam Javelin stock footage and pretty much every time an MS is onscreen during Doan's Island.
>>
>>13516644

Compared to some of the best like Akage no Anne in that same year or Conan the year prior, yes.
>>
>>13516644
I though the quality dropped around the Gyan episode. Space backgrounds started to look much cheaper and characters were looking much more off model. Last 3 episodes got a bit better, likely by sacrificing the few before.

I found most of the backgrounds during the first two thirds to be beautifully expressive though.
>>
>>13516962
And I just started Macross yesterday.
>>
>>13517003
It's like watching Gundam Wing. Whoever is in charge of the action sequences in IBO is just not good at his job.
>>
>>13518205
>Doan's Island
Was shit as a whole. It is everything I feared 0079 would be before watching the show. Thank god it lasted only for one episode, there's such an obvious lack of effort in every aspect of this one.

IBO animation isn't bad nor good, just acceptable. The editing and animation for mecha actions scenes is ridiculously underwhelming though.

Not even close.

People say Toei is bad, but comparatively speaking, I found Grendizer to be better animated than the original Gundam, and that was 3 years prior.

The action in Great Mazinger and Grendizer are actually pretty well animated, even though it can get boring since we already know all their attacks.

It was only in Mazinger that the animation was kinda eh, but the animators were still trying to learn how to animate giant robots at the time.

I'd say Toei and Sunrise were pretty on par when it came to robot anime in the 70s (With Toei having a slight advantage). I haven't watched Combattler, so I don't know if it's better animated than MSG or not, but Zambot 3 was honestly pretty bad animation wise. It looked like something that came out in the early 70s.
>>
>>13516962
>>13518544
Those shows are far from the worse.

Godmars's mech animation was shit, but the character animation was honestly pretty damn good.

If you want bad animation, look at Studio Knack's offering. Groizer X and Govarian are far worse.

And I'm saying this as someone who likes Govarian. For 1983 though, the animation is kind unacceptable. The voices are often times not even synced properly with the animation, like Chargeman Ken.
>>
>>13516644
It has a lot of QUALITY but I think it's worth the payoff because the fight choreography was fantastic in that show. I'll take a shape shifting Gundam doing loads of cool stuff over beam spam any day.
>>
>>13519495
Toei is only bad with adaptations, usually, and that's because they need to milk them for all their worth every single week. When it's doing original works, however, they tend to have more breathing room and planning (putting aside outliers like Gaiking: LODM).
>>
>>13519268
>For it's time it' was actually top dollar stuff
It was bad even by 1970's standards.
>>
>>13519495
>I haven't watched Combattler, so I don't know if it's better animated than MSG or not
Well they collaborated with Sunrise on that one (which is also true for the rest of the Robot Romance Trilogy), but from what little I saw of it was actually pretty decent animation wise.

Dancouga was weird. They kept re-doing stock footage like the various mech transformations (Shinobu's Eagle alone got like three completely different sets of stock footage for its transformations) but then a lot of the show was minimally animated or had a lot of panning stills, especially on Dancouga itself since they kept a pretty high level of detail on it compared to the separate components.

And then it got canceled and came back with three fantastic looking OVAs.
>>
>>13521641
The sad part being that it looks like crap because the inbetweens are missing. Otherwise it would be neat.

It's bad, but no where as bad as they make it out to be for the time.

It looks better than the PS1 cutscenes they shove into anime these days
