Is the Gespenst based on anything, or is it an entirely original design?
Originally made for Hero Senki, an RPG on the SFC. Gilliam henshins into it.

I think the question is whether it's obviously based off an existing mech, like how Huckebeins were very, very clearly Gundams or how the Grungusts are generic super robots with bits of Daitarn 3 in them n whatnot. Can't say I can identify any inspiration for the Gespenst, truth be told.

Huckebeins are not-Gundams, Lions are not-Valks, Grungusts are not-Daitarn woth some not-Mazinger in there, Gespensts started as a not-Rider. Euzeth's ludicrously complicated scheme spanning across four games and multiple lifetimes was all to become a not-Ultraman.
Welcome to SRW. It's references all the way down.

I'd think the not-Valks are any of the actually transforming machines rather than the flying modules with arms strapped on

Not him but the transforming ones have more gundamish designs imo.
The Wildraubtier transformation looks like the Zeta waverider and the R-Wing looks like the Wing's bird mode.

They do, but at least they actually transform.

Barrellions are the knockoff Destroids, basic Lions don't start off all that Valkish save for their absurd mobility but over time they focus more and more on missile spam and ramming things with Break Fields, the knockoff pinpoint barrier. Altairion's the first to really go full Valk.

and Alteisen is totally based on nine-ball

The closest mech I can think of that has similar proportions is the Dreissen. They even have the same spinngin blade weapons.

Lions are Not-Valks fixed in not-Gerwalk mode
Ogawara's design of this period

If anything, Galient is closer to the Gespesnt Design wise.
